General Discussion / Re: The Unpopular/Controversial Ideas Thread.

I have been avoiding it.

I am assuming it is either a bog standard open-world action-RPG, or a soulsborne?

Glasses aren’t clothing, though. Equally so, there are generally two glasses in glasses, so that actually makes sense. As do socks and shoes, and gloves and mittens. They are plurals because they are more than one.

Dresses tend to be full body things so they are outliers. Kilts, fair enough, too broad a question I suppose.

Pants (underwear), trousers, chinos, leggings, khakis, jeans, shorts, etc. They are singular things referred to in the plural, but why?

3258
How come we refer to clothes we wear on the bottom half of our bodies in the plural form, whereas clothes we wear on the top half of our body are singular?

3259
That would be a surprise given she was probably one of the two major characters in it.

I would expect Lisa Kudrows or Matt Le Blancs as they had the fewer major storylines in it.

In saying that, Matthew Perry was probably the weakest actor of the lot, and Courtney Cox was somewhat mono-dimensional.

There’s no harm in replying, though I would hope you know what you want from any interaction if you do. Sounds like she may need to do a bit of growing up, regardless.

From what you posted it appears you have no interest in rekindling anything, perhaps even no interest in even maintaining a friendship, which is understandable. Not replying will obviously achieve that.

From her side, she may realize she’s made an error in breaking up and wants to get back together; she may genuinely be concerned for your well-being; she may have given you time to come to terms with the end of a romantic relationship but thinks highly enough of you that she wants to maintain a friendship. Probably other things that haven’t crossed my mind.

Morbid curiousity dictates you should reply though, just to see what she wants, so long as you keep us informed :p no need to burn a bridge if you don’t have to, I guess, even if she was working on a touch of arson from her side.

I don’t think there’s anything better than the clarity gained from understanding, though this does come from my own perspective in which understanding generally involves empathy, if it’s something to do with another person.

That “aha!” moment when you figure out a something is always pleasant, though it could just be the end of frustration in relation to a hitherto unsolved problem.

This might also be why I don’t tend to seek out such problems: the uncertainty involved in how long it will take is inevitably not worth either solving the problem before the frustration builds up to the point of pleasant release, or the build-up lasts too long so the release is not worth the amount of time spent in that unpleasant heightened state.

I swear, if I'm doing anything that isn't making somebody money my dad has to be a whiny bitch about how "lazy" I am.

Well stop being lazy then: get a job for every hour of every day and be a productive member of society. Even if your body deteriorates to the point of death, you’ll make money for someone.

Euchre quite literally said greed is good (greed is a sin) and that capitalism should be unrestricted because "muh freedoms" (capitalism is inherently greedy and thus sinful and should be axed, among other reasons). Not a coincidence he's a Trumper.

Believe it or not, its possible to hate both Trump and Biden...

I was trying to be nice, but now I feel this is relevant:

Hey folks!  Which dick tastes better? Trump or Biden?
That's right folks, some of you seem pretty committed to sucking one of those dicks.  Can't realize they're both terribly flawed men.

...there are very good reasons I've avoided the temptation to even look at this thread until very recently.
I happen to hate Biden too, and TBH your comments came across as supporting Trump.
WTF?
Seriously, which comments are that?
Trump's gonna end up in a jail cell.  I just miss him because he kept shit like this from happening.

Do you think he “kept shit like this from happening” through any sort of competence, or things like this or this?

I come home from work just after noon today expecting to shovel the inch or so of snow that fell last night, only to discover that despite the below freezing air temperature, the snow banks at the side of the walking path outside my house have been melting in the sun and there are rather significant pools of water forming and subsequently freezing.

I haven’t been particularly assiduous with snow and ice removal this winter so there was already some thick bits of ice near the snow bank that was providing a shaded spot, but took the opportunity to chop away some of the inch thick ice accumulation now melting in the sun in an effort to make it less problematic for neighbours in he habit of walking.

Ice chopping for over an hour as a lefty does not mix well with having a wedding band, and I now have two blisters were the skin of my hand and finger were rubbing against my ring, both of which also apparently burst during my activities.

I really should just leave my neighbours to their icy fate, but they might sue me for it.

I took something out a bottle, certainly.

I just have a minor upper respiratory infection. I also felt better after filling two disposable hankies, folded appropriately in half and then quarters to use it efficiently, with the accumulations of probably around 6 days of said upper respiratory illness, and then gagging horribly on some that got stuck in my throat.

I should probably get over my aversion to periodically blowing my nose during illness since I think the unpleasant shortness of breath I was experiencing wasn’t a symptom of being ill, but having fucktons of gunk in my airways.

Anyway. I was slightly worried that some of the symptoms were covid-related long-term damage to something, rather than my own ineptitude. Glad to have been (hopefully) shown otherwise.

I got too much, time on my ha-ands.

And also illness and over-the-counter anti-histamines/hypnotics. My life is great.

(Also if you didn’t have a parent that grew up in the ‘50s or ‘60s, or don’t have passing familiarity with Westerns, it comes from this)

Does it feel like chicken when you’re eating it? Having tended strongly toward not eating avian or mammalian meat a few years ago (I have had the odd burger in the last year or so) I now can’t eat chicken because it just has a really weird mouth feel to it, and doesn’t actually really taste of anything.

I don’t know if it has something to do with Covid, because I came down with and recovered from that between throwing off non-piscine meat and having some chicken, and I lost smell and taste for about a month.

I did have catfish in what I could only describe as a dive bar in Kentucky, for the first time, and it was really quite spectacular. I had to keep checking to make sure it had the flakiness of fish because it was like eating chicken tenders. Loved it.

The thing is that it means the opposite of what it says on the tin, hehe.

It doesn’t mean the opposite of what it says on the tin, it’s just that there’s very small print on it too. In saying that, employers usually make you waive that “right to work” if you ever sign a contract anyway.

I have heard it said that you’re lucky if you get hired by someone. Why is it not the employer that is lucky you decided to dedicate some of your limited time on earth to lining their pockets?

Whistleblowers do deserve better protections, but for some reason “naeb’dy likes a clype”, or whatever local wording you happen to use, appears to have been so internalized by societies across the globe so when you air someone else’s dirty laundry, even to the betterment of your community, you are somehow a bad person for doing so.
