General Discussion / Re: what tv shows are you currently watching?
« on: February 06, 2022, 10:33:11 pm »
I am watching Elementary on Hulu, the Sherlock Holmes with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. Almost finished the first season, it is enjoyable, the myriad twists and turns the episodes take make them interesting from start to finish, but it does the typical American thing of having 4 times as many episodes in a season as it really needs to actually do any character development and deeper story stuff.

I also watched The Great a fictionalised telling of Catherine the Great’s rise to power and her tenure as Empress of Russia. It is, quite frankly, brilliant, and would urge y’all to give it a watch. There is minimal historical accuracy if that bothers you, but that would normally get on my nerves and it is easily ignorable as a result of the quality of the work otherwise.

‘Tis the season for respiratory illness also.

Probably wise to get tested though.

When did this turn into the word association thread?

They’re so in the minority that a leading Republican had to go on a major conservative talk show to apologize for calling the rioters on January 6th terrorists.

Teddy boy walking back them comments.
The thing about a vocal minority is that their complaints are always the loudest.

They’re not a minority if a leading politician and a major news network feel the need to pander to them in order for their continued existence in those roles, was my point.

Please don't tease me with your Dutch Paradise, I live in America
There's that youtube channel 'Not Just Bikes' about bicycling and urban planning, where the 95% of the content is the guy gushing over how much better the Netherlands are than North America.
He’s a cyclist so he’s obviously wrong in everything else about his life.

Remember, in any parliament there are many of those who just go with the flow, or act by pragmatism.

So as long as they enable the fascism but don’t actively take part, the fascism doesn’t exist, or is otherwise harmless?

Yeah, they seem to be pretty ridiculous. Why go to the expense of a hiring process and possibly training a new manager, risking a bad fit for the culture of the company in the process,  when they have someone they know can do the job already on staff?

Probably a good time to update your CV.

Another one in Minnesota, Amir Locke killed in the execution of a no-knock warrant. Nine seconds from the point they opened the door to when they shot him.

All vote King Willy! We'll not sink your entire navy this time, promise.  ;D

You can’t see the eyes of the demon, ‘til him come callin’.

The fun thing about annoying is that it’s not your problem.

Unless you’re so annoying that people abandon you.

Anyhow, a sensible person would broach the subject of annoyances delicately, so you know what behaviour triggers that. Everyone is different though, so what one person finds annoying someone else may find endearing *shrug*

It explains it all in the spoilers you provided.

The first one is about what you do with the data after it appears, specifically whether or not it can appear later. The example of a deck of cards is used: if you draw a Jack and the take it out, it makes it less likely that a Jack will appear later (52 cards total, 4 jacks. If you draw the Jack, there are now 51 cards with 3 jacks left, reducing the chances from 4/52=1/13 to 3/51=1/17) but if you put it back in there’s no change in the odds of a Jack showing up.

The second one is around predicting outcomes. It doesn’t take into account genetics or anything. Basically the example they use is that the four possible outcomes of two children (boy-boy, boy-girl, girl-boy, girl girl) are influenced by the information you know, so if, as in their example, you know one of the two children is a girl, you know for suresies the boy-boy outcome is impossible, meaning there are only three outcomes left, meaning a 33% chance of the other child being a girl as girl-girl is only 1 possibility out of the remaining 3 outcomes.

The two fallacies don’t really have anything to do with the other.

Work, obviously. How else do we produce the goods and services that prop up the economy and, by extension, society?

The sweet spot is Choco Latte in Edinburgh. Best tablet.

Or, it is the point on the bat in which you can hit the ball the cleanest, furthest from the handle, imparting the most energy to said ball.

The game sounds interesting, though I don’t want to be part of the giveaway as I have too many other games that I will be playing (and others I should be playing) but perhaps the people who receive the game will post of their experiences here.

I really don't think America is fascist. Trump, at worst, was merely reactionary. But there's a huge gap between the current state of affairs and 30s-era Italy and Germany, just from studying history.

I mean, a bunch of people tried to actually did storm the center of government because they were whipped into a frenzy by Their Side telling them their election - and by extension, their country - was being stolen from them, despite zero evidence of that.

What do you think would have happened has they actually succeeded in their aims?
