Chances are your friend was depressed prior to the relationship, else he’d have left a toxic relationship already, no?

Oh you sweet summer child. The thing about abusive relationships is that for whatever reason, people find them hard to leave. Even when the person is literally beating you, victims feel some sort of undefined pull that keeps them in place. They often rationalize their partners behavior and in the worst scenarios, they start to believe that they somehow did something to deserve this abuse. It's horrifying to see a friend undergo this transformation, and it's also incredibly frustrating when they refuse to do the obvious steps to help themselves.

The best analogy I can think of is drug addiction. At some point you know it's bad for you, but you keep going at it because you literally can't control yourself anymore.

The reason why I tell you this Hector is because it can happen to anyone. Even you. Not enough people are aware of the dangerous pull of these kinds of relationships, and even those who are aware can still get sucked in. The only real defense is to spot the red flags and get out before you cross that event horizon.

I am aware of this, moreso than most.

If your friend stayed in a relationship that was obviously abusive to an external party within two months of it beginning, it is likely your friend had some issue prior to the relationship. This could be from their ignorance of what a healthy relationship looks like, but if you were pointing out the issues you saw, it is much more likely they were emotionally incapable of committing to ending something that’s harmful to them.

Depression is an insidious beast, it manifests itself in so many different ways it can be difficult to identify, even if you know it’s there. It doesn’t even have to be bad to be wholly destructive to whomever has it because it can affect so many things in their life that it’s like death by a thousand cuts.

If this relationship uncovered they had it, the relationship was good for one thing at least, because now they can deal with that.

Regardless, the latter point still stands: you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. Your friend lives their own life, all you can do is be supportive of them until they make the decision to leave the relationship.

The fun part about abusive relationships though is that even if the relationship is ended, it doesn’t mean the abuse stops! Yay for extra trauma on the side.

It looks like my best friend's toxic relationship has finally given him clinical depression. I tried to convince him to leave her, but few people in those situations ever heed that kind of advice. Now he's depressed and I have no idea if he'll ever be able to get over it.

I feel like I've failed as a friend. They've been dating for two years and their relationship became a trainwreck 2 months in. I had so much time, but I wasn't able to save him.

Chances are your friend was depressed prior to the relationship, else he’d have left a toxic relationship already, no?

This also isn’t your fault. You told him what you saw, it’s up to him to act. You aren’t his handmaiden.

External stakeholders could just be anyone that’s affected by their actions, so it could include the people being deported, and the governments of places to which they’re being deported.

“Could”.

Pretty sure I argued that video games based on war was a form of profiteering when I was a teenager.

The company and employees aren't liable for the state of the food, and that's understood, and the hungry people get to eat.[...]They could be sued.  Hence, "throwing it away" and not locking the dumpster.  Except, not this time... smells like management to me.
It seems possible that they were afraid of getting sued for not securing the dumpster well enough, too. Of course we all know that the magic of the civil justice system is that you can never quite be sure what you aren't liable for.

The phrase “any reasonable person” would probably come into play.

“Any reasonable person” would consider eating food removed from a dumpster to be an unsafe proposition.

Why the employees were defending their garbage is, quite frankly, beyond me. They can’t sell it, and the only thing that might happens is they have to put other garbage back if the crowd happen to be messy.

On a scale of 1-10, how likely is it that the Republicans will now take climate change seriously?

It’s Alderaan, Starver, come ahn.

I am reasonably sure the line Vader starts is from second Death Star, uttered by the Emperor after he’s lured the Rebels there with the intelligence so many Bothan’s died for.

It was Tarkin who ordered the shot on Alderaan also. I am disappointed in xkcd.

Prep yourself for it. Set an alarm for when you want to get up for it for a few days prior, and actually get up and out of bed for however long you expect to be up for watching it. I always wake up at 6.45 as that’s when I normally get up, even if I don’t intend to actually rise at that point.

If you intend to go to bed again afterward make sure you take into account however long you’ll be asleep for the second time round. An adult is meant to get ~8 hours night, so if you’re only going to get 2 or 3 hours after that, try to get at least 4 in before the event, otherwise just go to bed earlier and get your sleep in beforehand. Obviously if you intend to go to bed afterward, avoid stimulants.

People aren't born with political views. People are born jewish. Making that comparison is indeed "denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities". (although I would change that to '...and/or religious identities', because being born of the jewish race does not make one automatically be of the jewish faith. I am a dutch agnostic jew. I have never been religious in any form or shape, except that one carnival festival where I dressed up as Jesus and had many followers give me free beers.

That's basically any post invoking Godwin's law ever, though. Anytime a Democrat compares a Republican's actions to a Nazi, they're equating what they've done to what the Nazis did to the Jews.

...Didn't repubs just agree that it's essentially legal to incite an assault, with intent of harm to various congresspeople as well as the vice president, on grounds of declaring victory on an election loss?

Of course they didn’t.

They said it’s cool to incite riots as the president so long as there isn’t enough time to impeach them before the end of their tenure, because as soon as it’s over we’re not allowed to hold the now-previous office-holder responsible for their actions in office.

Because that’s a fucking brilliant precedent to set.

I had worn down my lenses the last time I got new glasses and essentially had a permanently dulled left lens (not much of an issue as that is my much weaker Rey) but goddamn getting new glasses after that was great.

I should get my eyes tested again though; couple months overdue for that...
