General Discussion / Re: AmeriPol thread

I guess schools really are failing these days:

If you can't pay for things*, you can only have what someone else is willing to give you.

EDIT: changed don't to can't; if everything is free, you cannot pay for it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You can be pretentiously obtuse by moving of the goalposts away from what you acknowledge is the position people are speaking, to the dictionary definition of the words used to describe that position, but there’s no need to be a cunt when someone asks you a reasonable question when they think you’re engaging with the accepted phrase and not being a pretentious shit about it, aye?

Is there anything - beyond people not using language in a strict dictionary definition because they dare to use accepted terms to refer to something you think is reminiscent of dystopian government for some reason - that will result in a negative consequence from

PPE ah fuck it it’s moved in but I’m in a bad mood so have at it anyway.

Arthur sighs and scribbles quickly on a sheet of paper:

Peace and Prosperity Party Tax Proposals

20% income tax
20% corporation tax

4940
Arthur shakes his head as he rises.

“No sales tax. Senator Zhuo suggests people won’t notice the cost of goods going up by almost one-third in the days following us passing the budget. I think rather more highly of our constituents, and I don’t think this Senate would long survive such foolishness. To be fair, a lot of what he said seems to be designed to end this body before we can even begin!

He suggests that in order to make life better on Concordia, we should tax Concordians into oblivion: Real estate taxes to encourage good Concordians to leave; electricity and fuel taxes so good Concordians can’t afford to power their homes and vehicles; sales taxes so the price of everything increases far in excess of what even the hardest working Concordians can afford.

He doesn’t even stop there! Oh no, the common Concordian won’t even be able to find solace at the bottom of a bottle after they’ve lost everything at the hands of Zhuo’s tax schemes!

No, in order to achieve what he thinks we need, people to go out and explore among the stars, find new homes for our ever-growing population, we appeal to the frontier spirit that brought our ancestors here,”

Arthur brings the palm of his real hand down to slap the dais in front of him.

“Right here, all those years ago. Landing Spot. They faced great trials and tribulations, both lesser and greater than the ones we face today. They overcame failed harvests, great natural disasters, even, yes, losing communications with our ancestral home like we have today. And they triumphed! Everything we hold dear today we can thank our lucky stars that our forebears where hardy enough, clever enough, sheer-bloody-minded enough to blaze the trail. And for what? To see the first inklings of a planetary government squeeze the life out of the common man at the behest of that,”

He points at Zhuo with his prosthetic.

“Corporate beast who - credit where it’s due, at least he’s honest about it - wants us to crush the competition so he doesn’t have to dip into his own pockets to do it himself? And we all just nod along and “yes sir, excellent point, sir” our way into it?

We’re better than that. The Concordian people deserve better than that. We are here to represent and support the great people that make us who we are, not tell them what to do and not complain about it. We’re definitely not here to imply they’re too stupid to notice their paycheck only buys them 2/3 of their usual shopping every week.

We allow the people choice in what they need. We tax them 20% to give them a safe society to live and work in, and they decide what to spend the rest on. Actually force people like Zhuo to entice people to spend their money on what they sell, instead of forcing them by increasing the price of everything so rapidly it makes their head spin. We’d lose our best and brightest in the immediate aftermath, those quick enough, rich enough, or just plain lucky enough to get out before the floor falls out from under them.

No, if Zhuo’s product is good enough, and sold at a fair price, he has nothing to worry about. People will buy it. We could even offer a subsidy or a grant to a bold new generation of Concordians, ready to seek out their own Landing Spot somewhere in the vastness of the universe.

Perhaps he has deep enough pockets to offer such grants to those that wish to find their fortune among the stars, so we don’t have to? He doesn’t seem to think they’re clever enough, though. He said explorers won’t have to pay fuel taxes out there in the endless space between planets. I wonder how they’ll get off Concordia without paying those fuel taxes? Perhaps one of them will get out and push?”

You have obviously never worked retail where they play the same four Christmas songs, remixes or covered by different bands invariably not as good as the original, for however many weeks between Thanksgiving and a New Year.

Arthur rises, shaking his head.

“Do you want to stifle business? A flat 20% rate for everyone, including business.”

4943
( do I exist )

((I mean, shit dude, I don’t think we’re qualified to answer that))

Arthur nods at the Speaker, shrugs slightly, and offers a wry smile to his colleagues.

While other people are useful, y’all can do this on your own.

You’re not doing anything wrong, and the co-worker has form for being a whiner (it seems anyway) so they shouldn’t really be able to cause problems for you, especially if the boss is on your side.

I had come to that conclusion.

I over-analysed the hell out of everything. Most people would simply do and work it out. It's why loads of people have bad relationships. It's also why people have relationships.

Edit: on the plus side, I've learned a lot from it. I also no longer think I'm unattractive. There've been four girls at work already who've definitely been after me. Who knew, eh?

It’s also why people have good relationships :p you miss all the shots you don’t take /relationships as sports cliche

Anyhow, learning how to be in a relationship is an important skill. I have no words of wisdom because I’m very tired, but something about liking someone enough to stand being around them for any length of time is a good start.

Waiting aaaaaggghh.

Arthur stands and cleared his throat.

“We at the Peace and Prosperity Party have been in some late night talks with the Corporatists, and have the following to put forward.”

1. The creation of a federal system, located in Landing Point, which shall regulate the states, but these states will retain the autonomy to set their own laws in addition to those set in the UN Charter.

2. The creation of a primary assembly, the Senate, which will be composed of all present parties, which will work to solve issues

3.The establishment of the UN Charter as the official law. This law will set the foundation upon which we base all future laws. All states will be granted the right of adding local laws, to be abided by in those states. These local laws may not go against the letter or spirit of the UN Charter, but the states may appeal to the Office of Law, as set out later in this motion, to make their case for any particular law that will apply to their state if it is deemed to go against the letter or spirit of the UN Charter.

4.Following Point 1, we advocate for the Senate - in addition to Senators that bring forward, discuss and vote on motions - to retain a representative from each state, alongside the Senators. Representatives have the same rights as Senators in the Senate. The Senate will be the body to regulate taxes laws, banks, commerce...

5. Following Point 4, we also advocate for the creation of an international force, which would only answer to the Senate. This force would be tasked with aiding states during Middle or Higher issues.

6. The creation of the Office system which divides control of certain matters between the Senators best suited to dealing with them as described within this document.

Spoiler: The Offices Addendum (click to show/hide)

7. We propose our planet to be named the "Concordian Union". Any alternative proposal will be taken into consideration.

There is a point when you have to stop considering and analyzing and just get on with it, man.

Differences don’t necessarily lead to conflict, assuming both parties are good at communicating.

You can try to salvage things, assuming you haven’t messed things up that bad, or you can move on and find someone better (or worse!) and do whatever historians do with people in the present.
