Life Advice / Re: Desensitizing one’s self to Drama.
« on: December 09, 2019, 01:49:53 pm »
ChairmanPoo is a doctor. At least claims to be.

But he’s also a haemotologist, so maybe he just likes the idea that someone has all their blood pooling in their head, ‘cause he’s some weird night creature.

As fer desensitisation, you can do it slowly, as everyone seems to be suggesting, also known as systematic desesnitsation, or you can go the flooding route, and just put yourself in the most dramatic situation you possibly can.

My favourite example of flooding is when two psychologists treating a teenage girl who was scared of travelling in a car bundled her I nto the back of a car and drove around until she stopped screaming.

At least that’s the way I was told it went down...

Anyway, the idea is to learn how to deal with the emotions and such that come up when you are, for lack of a better term, triggered. You’re not going to learn how to do that by avoiding it.

Perhaps putting yourself in a situation you can easily remove yourself from (watching a dramatic movie) but that you force yourself through just to understand the sensations you get from it (how you feel emotionally and physically) and that drama occurring isn’t a terrible thing for you.

Someone suggested chatting to your therapist before doing it though, and that’s probably a good idea seeing as they are expert and have a better handle of your specific situation than some randos on B12 telling you how they think it is.

What do you think real life is?

I suppose something that qualifies as an achieving or productive life: Having a family. Doing something great. Having a job that gives you a sense of success and direction and progression. Being a pillar of a community.

You refer to this as real life, but how many people do you think manage these things? How many people manage these things at your age, too?

Would you like your life to consist of all these things, or would any one be good enough?

Quote
Perhaps I'm just tired, but it's a shallow sense of insecurity that is just resurfacing at the moment. All these things, which I feel I should be doing or have done already, aggravate that nagging inferiority complex that's I've been addicted to all my life.

"Hello I'm Josh, and I'm an inferiority addict."

I don’t think you’re an inferiority addict, I think you just have this ideal of what a good life is and you don’t think you have that, and every minute that you don’t is a waste, rather than part of it.

Being insecure is fine, everyone gets insecure, it’s just trying not letting it overwhelm you, like with the little test thing you did for the career counselor. You were getting bent out of shape with all the negative thoughts that you should be where you want to be right now sharpish actually yesterday but you still did it anyway, because you knew the end point of seeing the career dude would be a good thing for you in the long-term.

Not letting things get to you is easier said than done though. If you figure that one out let me know :p

I always try to do that whole devil's advocate let's be fair to everyone gumdrops and rainbows etc thing, but yeah 10-1 sounds about right.

Just don't take it too far.

I was reading through many of the tweets replying to it, feeling more and more disdain for people continuing the nonsense, until I read one at the bottom which said it was not just stupid but it was untrue, and realized I hate it when people don’t take the time to understand it’s nonsense more.

I've slept, not quite uninterrupted (was awake for maybe a combined 2 hours in there), but close to it, from about 10:30 pm last night until roughly now, around 4:20 pm the next day. Something approaching sixteen hours not-quite-straight? Still kinda' feel like taking a nap, too :-\

I do that once every few years, when I have a fever. You wake up a bit tired, maybe a bit thirsty, then you're just better.

This has happened to me the last several nights and i’n still sick.

You lie, man, and I am saddened.

We went to the mall yesterday with my little guy and it was nice.
No fist fight with the mall Santa? How else are you gonna get the presents?

Of course not. This is a sneaking mission.

Weapons OSP?

I expelled a massive bogie from my nose, and it was delightful.

Unfortunately I’m also I’ll, so chances are another will just take its place, like a tiny mucus hydra

I personally try to avoid making myself feel bad.

Getting into spirals of thinking that just make me feel like shit serve no purpose beyond making me feel like shit, so I try not to do it. Noticing how I react to things was useful too.

At work, for example, there are particular tasks I used to loathe and get very frustrated about having to do, which would lead to spiraling negative thoughts that eventually exhaust me. Having noted how and when I got frustrated about them, and how that made me feel physically and emotionally, I set about stopping that inevitable spiral before it started. It took a long time to do it, and it still happens now and again, but at least I know I’m capable of avoiding it if I set my mind to it.

I also try to avoid getting too tired, since that fucks me right up. Trying to get a good night’s sleep is the first step in that regard. Regular bed- and wake-up times help with that though.

Well, with an analogue clock you can have the top be either 0 or 12, evidently people decided 12 was better than 0.

Which doesn’t really make that much sense, what with it being the first hour of the morning and afternoon, rather than the last, but hey, people are silly.

The giggling may have been to throw you off.

Dem Norn Iron girls, mate. Figured you'd be used to them by now, or have you been into the medieval ladies too long?
