I think we should rechristen him Richard Simmons.

In other news, McHenry decides that one of his first actions as Speaker Pro Tempore should be to evict Pelosi and former majority leader Hoyer from their offices, giving her a day to vacate the space while she’s in California mourning Dianne Feinstein, because there aren’t more important things to do in unprecedented times and a shutdown looming.

I have a strong feeling that Americans got a de facto multi-party system with all the fun stuff like the coalition-forming process. But both the American public and American politicians are in denial of that.
That isn't wrong, though it must be emphasized that there was no deliberate effort to create or prevent any party system. What we have grew organically and has nothing but the weight of inertia behind it.
Tell that to the Democrats that all voted in unison...
And stretch and stretch and stretch…

You’re not clogging the thread if you’re happy about it. I imagine you’ll get more people from here, anyway.

Sure, the Democrats had plenty of reason to dislike McCarthy. But they have to realize that he can only be replaced by someone worse.

Let's turn this around. What motivation do Dems have to even consider supporting McCarthy here?

McCarthy just cooperated with the Democrats to keep the government open. That was explicitly stated as the primary reason why The Right removed him from office, and we can only assume that whoever they support as the next speaker will be unwilling to do the same.

They are <2% of the vote in congress. They need to make compromises or there won’t be a permanent speaker in office for a long while. What that means in practice is anybody’s guess.

EJ just wants to blame the Democrats, and is willing to do any amount of mental gymnastics to justify that position.

They didn’t spend the entire time blaming the Dems, it was a back and forth of Gaetz’ opponent ceding his time to his “very good friends” in the party to big up McCarthy while Gaetz spent a lot of his time going “nah, he sucks ass and you’re idiots for supporting him and allowing him to negotiate to avoid a shutdown.” with the occasional ceding of time to other nutters saying broadly the same thing.

Gaetz also had to do this while standing at a Democrat podium, because they apparently wouldn’t let him use one of the Republican ones.

Let's turn this around. What motivation do Dems have to even consider supporting McCarthy here? He's made it blatantly obvious that he will ignore any deal he makes the second the vote is over, bends over backwards to cater to his far right extremists, and very occasionally grudgingly allows legislation that has nigh-universal bipartisan support through. If they decided to vote to protect him, he would reward that by continuing to cater to Gaetz and MTG, not by acting in the favor of the Democrats.

Exactly. The only reason this even happened was because McCarthy changed the rules so that it only took one representative to bring forward a motion to vacate in order to placate the far-right Freedom caucus.

Sure, the Democrats had plenty of reason to dislike McCarthy. But they have to realize that he can only be replaced by someone worse.

Let's turn this around.
Why?
Why not?

They have to find someone to nominate first. Gaetz wanted Scalise, who is being treated for blood cancer and was happy with McCarthy.

This is uncharted territory though. The rules don’t set out what an interim speaker can and can’t do, how long they can remain in the position, or when a vote has to be held.

Edit: there’s also nothing stopping McCarthy running again.

In a marriage, does it truly matter whom asked whom?

Assuming everybody voted,  Gaetz needed 206 votes for his motion to pass. He was relying on the Democrats, not the other way round.

And of course, like always, the Democrats evade all blame. I can see the appeal of being a Democrat...

If the Democrats brought the motion to vacate forward, would it have succeeded?

Let's see if I can get away with pointing out that the Democrats criticize McCarthy over the extreme right, while joining with the same extreme right to vote out McCarthy.

And to make sure I get shouted down, let me add that the Democrats claim to put people over politics, yet their united vote to remove McCarthy guarantees that nobody is going to be in charge 44 days from now to authorize further spending to keep the government running. Or am I missing something that would allow the Government to continue without a Speaker?

The current speaker by law must maintain a list of people to replace him. The person at the top of that list will be in charge until a permanent replacement will be found.

I also might suggest that the extreme right of the Republicans joined with the Democrats, not the other way round. There were a max of 12 extremists, there are over 200 Democrats.

Edit: Patrick McHenry is interim speaker. It’s unknown what powers he actually has, though.

McCarthy’s out.

Props to Matt Gaetz for criticizing McCarthy for relying on Democrat votes to pass the CR, and then relying on Democrat votes to succeed in his motion to vacate.

Zelensky was visiting Canada, the speaker of their parliament brought a guest, who was a Ukrainian veteran from WWII, who was a member of an SS regiment fighting the Soviets, and the speaker said something along the lines of him being a hero and everyone gave him a standing ovation and then everybody got embarrassed because they didn’t realise he was a member of the SS and blamed the speaker who stood down.

The B-story in 8 was atrocious and pointless. I think it was only in it to give Finn and Rose something to do, because if you’ve got token minorities in the film, you might as well hammer home that you didn’t want them by giving them a completely empty story.

The only good bit of 9 was basically the roll-call montage at the end when all the pilot characters from earlier movies showed up.
