Or the calming effect their presence had on the majority black populace.

jesus I got mobbed.

why are you guys assuming that these guys would be bringing ar-15s? in Portland?

seriously, oathkeepers have run security at events like this before, and they don't bring guns. you're all just having hysterics because brownshirts.

They also decided to send four heavily armed white men to Ferguson during the riots on the anniversary of a white cop killing a black teenager, ostensibly to "protect a media organization", alleged to be InfoWars.

A viewpoint neutral (y'know, the standard under American jurisprudence and American ideals) says he can hire black panthers for his security. He can hire clowns for his security. He can round up a pack of literal Illinois Nazis for his security. If they're doing nothing but act as security, they're all utterly interchangeable in the eyes of the law. It doesn't and it shouldn't matter how brown or tie dyed their shirts are.

Once "unpopular" individuals and groups are no longer treated equally under our rule of law, we've gone and walked back American society a few decades of hard earned progress. I take poorly those who'd kink back the moral arc of history because they don't have the capability to see past a pair of sunglasses. Looking especially at Portland's jackass of a mayor right now.

That's the thing about ideals and philosophy, man. They're lovely on paper but a bit shit when it comes to reality.

If these groups could be trusted to police a rally impartially and within the law, I'd be alright with it, but I find it stupendously unlikely to be what would happen. I'd feel the same way about militant far-left organisations providing security for Democrat political rallies too.

PPE: I feel the need to express that I'm not saying the Republicans are fascist, just that paramilitaries providing security for political parties is fascist. It's worrying for me that someone representing the Republicans, however minor league, however decentralised the part is or whatever, is saying they're thinking about doing it.

PPE2: Perhaps it would be wise to cool off, Dorisdwarf. There's no need for name calling.

And forum survey says: nope. Right to assembly is limited only to the "good guys".

Thanks for your participation.

Where did anyone say that? I think the consensus so far has been "don't hire as security for your political rallies politically-minded paramilitaries that engage in violence to meet their goals".

Way to misrepresent, man.

It may've just been one minor league guy, but the fact he can claim to represent a major political party and think suggesting something like that is okay, in jest or otherwise, is worrying.

...?

I'm taking the word of a low-tier scrub as actual announcement of the intent of that self-same low-tier scrub. I don't think that this guy is going to get Donald Trump to hire the The League of Super Evil Gun-Fuckers to secure his events, but I can still yell at the guy who actually said that's what he wants?

Also, okay, I was wrong, SMJ is a bit of an idiot or poorly-worded what he meant, that doesn't change the rest of what I said.

(ily smj plz no haet)
If you really consider them the words of a single low-tier idiot and not the words of the actual Republican party, then shouting "fascism" and "oh no, the nazis are coming" over the words of a single low-tier guy is a bit extreme, don't you think?

Why does it matter that he's a low-tier scrub? He is a representative of the Republican party who has said he is willing to look into hiring paramilitaries to provide security for political events. That's something fascists do. Nobody, far as I can tell, has said he Nazis are coming, just saying that hiring paramilitaries is literally fascist, and not something a reasonable person should want to see happening.

Re: regular security not dealing with violent protesters: does this mean both sides need to have an arms race to see who has the bigger, better paramilitaries? If the regular security you've hired doesn't do what they're being paid to do, you perhaps go "I don't think we'll hire them again" and go with someone else. The actual police, for example.

8946
Well what else would you call hiring paramilitaries - who have engaged in political violence - to police your political events?

I just needed to let some of my anger out, mkay?

No, it's much healthier to bottle it all up until your mind breaks and you explode at the least opportune moment, alienating your comrades and loved ones forever.

I think it's less obnoxiously loud and more boisterous and lively, though, for those countries. Though I don't believe I've heard the "loud German" one.

I'm not sure if Northern Ireland is much of a target for German tourists, but they flock to Sweden every summer. They do not leave a good impression.

Tourists in general do that. Go to Edinburgh in August, you'll see.

You'll see.

Hey, that's heading into proper fascist territory now.

Perhaps he's just a Republican that doesn't hide from what they are /Poe's Law

Asked if he was considering such groups as security providers, Buchal said: “Yeah. We’re thinking about that. Because there are now belligerent, unstable people who are convinced that Republicans are like Nazis.”

lol

Everybody shut the fuck up :P

But limiting the people who can attend means that the only people who are going to learn about these issues are black women, and I imagine if the issues already affect black women, they don't need to learn that much about them.

Open it up to everyone who is interested, the more awareness of the issues there are and the more likely they are to be improved.

Macron looks like he's finding the situation extremely gratifying. Perhaps too gratifying...
