"Ouch, Thodam. Old Orebeard was the reason I avoided going into stonework, but I didn't know he was that bad. Though, we both have the day off. Want to go do something fun?" Thodam cheers up considerably. "Sure, where do you want to go?"

Well done, nice art.

I really shouldn't have been the first person to say that, even if he does have a bit of a long face..
He? Who says it is a he, though?

Hold on a second,
Are we not missing something?
Seasons must be said.

You go round a bend close to where they are argueing. You hear most of their conversation.

Master Orebeard: Now just you listen to me boy. I've had enough of your shinanigans. Those tools, and those materials are for you to create fine crafts and furniture from, not for you to mess around with and make ridiculas toys and figurines. If you don't get your act together, you'll be losing your apprenticeship and your chance of having a proper education in stonework.
Thodam: Master-
Orebeard: No, just you listen to me! Get out of here, and don't come back 'til tomorrow. If you still haven't improved, you'll lose your apprenticeship and your once chance of a proper education in stoneworking.
Thodam: But master, I was just making a gift for-
Orebeard: Listen to me - if you want to make your own toys and crafts, then get your own equipment. Now get out.

You hear the door of the workshop slam shut, and Thodam walking towards your position.

"What do you think? Did I capture their wretched likeness?" Urist asked his master. He looked at him curiously. "Very good. I see you made good work of those spare kitten bones I had lying around the worshop, and that chunk of oak aswell. I'd rate it.. of superior quality. Well done. You've chosen your craft, and we'll begin some more serious lessons soon, so why don't you take the day off?"

You leave the workshop. You notice your good friend Thodam, arguing with his master, Mister Orebeard.

216
Lets see if a fourth person approves of one of these..

217
Urist walked into his masters main workshop. "Err, master.. I have finished it." He smiled, and reached out. Urist handed the craft to him, and his master began examining it.

You feel like you should say something about it.

Far in the air, Jacos struggled to control his plane. After spilling his Frappuccino the controls, they were proving incredibly hard to use.

Jacos gasped as the plane begin tilting downwards, and heading towards a huge, citadel like building, with a massive sign saying "Bay 12" on it.

219
Urist searches through various drawers, but finds nothing other than the ordinary. He sees nothing else to improve his lovely craft with. Is it time to show it to his master?

220
Urist looked in the workbenches drawer where his master stored some varnish, and sure enough, there were pots of varnish. He coated the work in a thin layer of varnish, taking his time to make sure he would not apply too much. After around five minutes, he was done, and had another fifteen minutes.

What should Urist do now?

221
Urist gets to work, making the base of the craft menace with spikes of glorious oak and bone. While not skilled at working bone, Jacos finds that it is not that hard to carve, and gains some experience at it.

You look at your figurine, in all its glory. The evil goblin is being struck down by a royal executor with a large hammer. Two nearby dwarves are cheering. It menaces with spikes of bone and oak.

Is there anything else Urist should do before he approaches his master with his craft? Urist estimates he has around twenty minutes left.

222
Urist has a brilliant idea, to create an image of the infamous goblin leader Srnaksarl being executed by a glorious dwarven hammerman. You get to work, carving out in fine detail. Soon, the carving is beginning to look very good, when suddenly you decide that it could be WAY better if it menaced with spikes! You look around the workshop, and notice a number of things;

On a table, there are several lumps of fine oak. Also, wrapped in cloth are several bones of a small animal. Finally, there is a large boulder on the floor - perhaps your friend could fashion some spikes out of that, as you yourself are not trained to make things out of stone.

223
"Trade goods." Urist said aloud. His master smiled. "I thought you'd prefer trade goods. Right then. I'd like you to spend some time working on a very detailed figurine. I haven't assessed your skills for a while, so I'll be judging how good you are from it. I'll leave you be for an hour, and by then I want you to bring it to me in my workshop. Good luck."

He walked out, and left Urist, leaving him to wonder what he would create.

224
Urist, at ten years of age (in MY dwarf fortress universe, dwarves become adults at 16), was a fairly talented wood crafter. However, today Urist would be doing something very serious: after the many years of training as a woodcrafter, learning to craft fine figurines, prized as great trade goods to sell humans and to rub in the faces of elves, smoothing and assembling furnature, and even learning to craft somewhat functional crossbows, Urist would decide his branch of woodworking. That was not to say that he could not work on the other branches, but his choice would greatly influence his training.

Urist slowly walked out into the great corridor. A great corridor that stretches from the great residential district to the busy crafting district which in turn has the office branch and leads to the stockpile district. Gazing around, Urist stared at dozens of bearded faces. Suddenly, he feel a tug on your right arm; turning his head, he saw his best friend, Thodam.

"Come on then, lazy stones, lets go! Apparently, I get to do some more figurine work!" Urist smiled. Thodam, slightly younger than you, was always eager to go back to crafting his stone figures. He remembered when he had chiselled out a young naked lady with large breasts. That had been passed around by lots of friends, though it did eventually end up in the hand of your furious mother. What a terror that was to behold.

Walking to the crafting district, Urist said goodbye to Thodam as he walked into the workshop of his master, Fedlem. He glanced at the man. He was fairly tall, and somewhat broad, but had incredibly skillfull and agile fingers. Urist was still awestruck by the amazing crafts he could produce with some of the lowest quality wood; however, being such one of the most skilled wood crafters in the city of Tolmorthir, the king had ordered that he only received the highest quality wood to make his crafts from, which Urist benefitted from, as he in turn could use them.

Fedlem eyed him. "So, lad, have you made up your mind? You have one choice. I can teach you yer generic furniture crafting, or I can teach ya to make smaller wooden crafts and trade goods, and maybe a bit extra about crossbows on the side. What'll it be, furniture or trade goods?"

225
In fact, Urist was never really a fan of any sort of farming. Urist, though, was interested in two things, though in one he did achieve excellence. And those two were; Stoneworking and Woodworking. Urist also enjoyed playing with toy swords, and one officer said that perhaps one day, he could join the military.

So, Urist has grown to a young lad, and must decide what his apprenticeship shall be; Shall he work as a Stoneworker or a Woodworker?
