DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Soldiers Absolutely Owned. Help?
« on: March 12, 2011, 12:51:15 pm »
There was a period where this wasn't true, but was thankfully quickly fixed. I had an incident where my militia commander picked up his shiny masterwork steel axe and started to train with a fellow dwarf. He promptly lopped his arm off. The injured dwarf was rushed to the hospital and patched up. When he had healed enough to go back to training, he went straight beck to sparring the the commander. Who immediately chopped his head off in the first swing. Don't think he quite had the right idea about training.
I dunno... I bet your commander got all sorts of points for the decapitation, so from a purely technical view, it was probably more efficient that way. However, from the viewpoint of the decapatee (this should be a word), it was likely less than ideal. Also, somebody dropped plump helmet roast behind the armor rack again.

Designate or Build up or up/down stairs on the level below, and then Designate down or up/down stairs on the level you'd like to start digging on.

I think you can make it a stockpile that accepts no goods and get the same effect without any building.

Isn't there a minor mood hit for being naked as well?

If there is some kind of uniform for carpentry that only occasionally causes problems, then it's possible. I'm not so sure though, I have never had any issues with carpentry interfering with anything.

6
Hmmm. Good to know. I've never had it happen personally, but I've seen a few posts where people just assumed it was dwarf therapist and left it at that. I wonder what causes it so infrequently?

I don't think falling objects can hit dwarves unless it is a cave-in, but I could be wrong on that.

Well, I've heard that goblin attackers like to cluster around their leader, and he's up in the air, I would assume. Why the leader won't move, I'm not sure. I don't really know enough about fliers.

I usually create a support connected to a kill lever with a 2x1 wall or pillar of rock on top of it, then build hospital beds on those and build a table/traction bench next to it as needed. Surround it with floor grates and it will allow work to continue. It's a fairly complicated design to build though. You might just be better off dropping ceiling on the patient or digging out underneath as the situation calls for.

Hospitals in DF are very hit and miss. I've had patients that I tried to get the chief medical dwarf to look at for months and he'd sit in the dining room with no job, then I'll get distracted by another problem and the dwarf is magically fixed up and going about his/her business as if the horrific wounds never existed. But I've had almost as many dwarves that never recovered, even after years, and had to be put down.

I've tried things like switching chief medical dwarves, re-wounding patients to reset the diagnosis procedure, using the workaround for casts as opposed to splints/traction and a few other things, but there doesn't seem to be a solution in a lot of these cases.

So, what I'll typically do once I have a hospital up and running is:
-Disable all other jobs on chief med dwarf and anyone else with a unique medical skill. If there is a job without anyone with any skill, enable it on chief med dwarf.
-Build my hospital in such a way in which it is easy to terminate any particular patient easily (usually with a several z level fall).
-Never make plaster powder due to the apply cast bug.
-Make only enough soap to supply the hospital and forbid any other soap (any more may result in clean self spam, supposedly a dwarf washer helps).
-If the chief medical dwarf ignores his patients, just ignore him and occasionally he'll eventually get up and do his job.

If you build a wall, the dwarf building it will land butter side down.
...What?
It's a common example of Murphy's Law. Buttered bread will almost always land buttered side down. And if you build a wall without blocking off all other possible locations, a dwarf will find a way to get stuck behind it.

I wonder if people are still trying to create anti-gravity by tying buttered bread onto cats...

Are the coffins set to allow burial or did you try to make a tomb out of them? Did you first create the slabs at the mason's workshop? They can only be engraved at the craftsdwarf workshop once they've actually been created.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: marksdwarves wont take ammo
« on: March 02, 2011, 10:28:57 pm »
If you have wear uniform over clothes enabled, have you tried putting them on alert? I usually set it to wear armor only. Have your hunters been assigned the same ammo possibly? Have you tried making more ammo than you assigned to your military? Have you tried changing the amount of ammo assigned (a higher value than they can even carry seems to work best from my experience)?

Are all of these dwarves possibly in your military? Did you enable woodcutting as well as mining on all dwarves (this does not work as it requires more than 1 weapon)? Have you tried checking to see if woodcutting was enabled manually?

Look around where the FB died on on the way back to your main living area. Forgotten beast extract gets on your soldiers, then your soldiers end up tracking it around. Here's another recent thread where the OP is dealing with a similar FB extract and the syndrome it causes. There are a few different types.

Also, it's good to look at the descriptions of FBs for hints as to what you're dealing with when they pop up.
