I don't think it works like that, though.  I think he suddenly gets an inspiration, claims a workshop, and turns out an arc in a flurry of mad mumbling.  We can't use priorities to set arcs the same way we set lesser tasks; we can just provide the necessary resources via paypal and hope that he doesn't go insane.

I've taken to viewing my followers in adventure mode the way I'd view "hit points" in any other game.  I just start my adventurers with skill 15 in bows, and hide behind my 'friends.'  When I get low on those, I go back to a town to heal.

...is it planned for there to be skills related to recruiting and leading people in the future?  Right now every adventurer rolled seems to have the ability to hypnotize drunks with their piercing gaze.

Maybe they should be set to retract by default?  It's a common question, and crossing the cave river is probably the first thing the player is likely to do with an underground bridge...

Actually, is there any reason why the player wouldn't have them set to retract?

All of the above are still GNU FDL, so we can copy things between them as needed as long as the edit summary lists where it's being copied from (to satisfy GNU FDL attribution requirements), but we should probably decide on one place and stick with it...

At the very least I suppose it ought to be one of the dedicated Dwarf Fortress wikis. There would be lots of advantages to that...  we could create our own categories as much as we want, for instance, while people on a more general Wiki would probably protest if we created a category for each type of thing in Dwarf Fortress.

Even assuming we could somehow finesse them into letting us keep a page on Dwarf Fortress itself, I really doubt we could convince anyone to let us keep a guide there...  the policies are pretty clear about not allowing that.  And people would probably complain if you swept in and closed every Dwarf Fortress related AFD as 'keep' without bothering to read the votes.  Er, the not-votes.  Whatever they're called today.

All Wikia wikis are required to use the same license, so we could definately, at the very least, move it around there.  And that license is the GNU FDL, which isn't particularly restrictive and is quite commonly accepted among wikis.

Well, for now I at least moved all the Dwarf Fortress-related pages on that wiki to subpages of Guide:Dwarf Fortress, so they won't get in anyone else's way.

What we can do is work on a guide there, then copy it over to another wiki if we ever get one...  assuming our other wiki uses the same license, anyway.

Maybe getting our own wiki would be best, actually...  how do we go about doing that?

EDIT:  Ok, I don't think we can, at least not on Wikia.  Their Wikia creation policy states:

quote:
Wikis must have a large potential audience, and be likely to attract enough editors to maintain the wiki over a long period of time. Personal wikis, wikis for small groups, or individual schools are not generally permitted. See the university and schools policy. If your proposal is too narrow in scope, you will be advised to broaden it and add your idea as a sub-section of a larger Wikia.

I doubt Dwarf Fortress meets that (yet, anyway.)

Maybe we should look into starting our own wiki elsewhere, though...  now that I think about it, we'd probably want to create lots of subpages and other things that could get hairy on another Wiki.

Oh, and for the record, whoever started the things above wasn't me.

I wonder... by the time those bloats are reached, will the game have become Slaves to Armok III?  I mean, it won't really be "Dwarf Fortress" anymore at that point...

I also feel that the "wizard fortress" is my favorite of the ultra-long-term bloats, though.

A fence might at least slow them down a little and keep some things from casually wandering in.  Oh, and it would keep your dwarves from being spooked by, say, a deer just on the other side of the wall, which is a big plus.

And a monkey that jumped over the wall easily on the way in might have more trouble getting out when it's weighed down by several tons of your food...

But really, now that I think about it this idea is sort of silly given that dwarves are supposed to be moving below ground for protection anyway.

It would be nice if we could build wooden fences or walls outdoors...  Somewhat different from the rewalling req, but related.  Of course, large creatures and enemy armies would have to be able to break them down...  and maybe some things could tunnel under them.  I wonder how that would work?

Quickly!  Skin them, turn their bones into crafts, and sell the traders bone rings and leather armor made from the remains of one of their compatriots!

I keep trying to use pageup and pagedown in that menu and accidently moving the cursor diagnonally as a result...

Clever...  I wonder if the extra nine spaces contained by the workshop would earn the dwarf more happiness than they'd lose from the noise?

Maybe dwarves should get upset if other people spend time in their room... although then they'd get upset even if someone came into to detail the floor, add new furniture, or make other improvements, which doesn't really make sense.

Certainly it makes sense for dwarves to be annoyed if other people constantly pass through their room to reach someplace else, though.

Hrm, there's another idea for an odd fortress:  No connecting corridors, just a huge grid of rooms seperated by doors.  Of course, noise would be a problem...

Even right now, if you need a room in a hurry you can slap two doors into a hallway a few spaces apart, throw a bed in between them, and presto!  Room.
