DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Will this run DF decently
« on: July 08, 2012, 04:01:03 am »
I have access to Pentium 4, Core 2 Duo and i7 2600. They all have around 3GHz, give or take five hundred or so. When it comet to running DF, Core 2 Duo proves to be almost four times faster than Pentium 4 and i7 can run at 100 FPS a fort that is barely playable on Core 2 duo.

It will run DF.

That Nvidia Optimus chip may be problematic, because it is still unsupported by kernel, but look up "project Bumblebee" to fix it.

This means your broker has no skill in Appraisal. It will fix itself. I started with one (or was it two?) points in Apprisal and could see the prices. Appraisal is rasied every time a caravan comes along and you open the trade for the first time. See: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Appraisal

If they can't get you, they leave after they get bored. You can "wall in", that is, use a raided bridge, a wall, a door, a floor hatch or something similar to keep them away from your dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Preparing for the journey CAREFULLY
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:22:05 pm »
Bringing things like buckets, ropes and quivers is a matter of convenience. Sure, it is always cheaper to bring material and set up temporary workshops, but that needs some time and space.

I like to bring milk for food, but butchering animals is even cheaper. If you gather herbs or bring plump helmets to distil after embarking, make sure to adjust Z->cooking to not cook plants or booze.

My favourite embark trick it to bring as much bronze ores as you can. It was overpowered in 0.31 (especially if you had an armoursmith and a weaponsmith with you), but got absolutely blown out of proportions in 0.34.11. For 492 embark points I got 32 malachite, 32 cassiterite and 36 bitunious coal (you want 9 coal per 8 ores) as well as an anvil and 3 granite to make workshops. Actually scratch that, use a log to make a temporary mason's workshop and convert one granite boulder into four blocks. Anyway, it produced 256 bronze and 256 coke. Enough to make all the picks and axes I need, outfit several squads, get every dwarf with no moodable skills to make some bolts and a piece of armour, make some serrated disks for sale or traps, train weaponsmith and armoursmith from starting level 5 and still have leftovers by the time I make steel.

DF Suggestions / Re: Spin the pathfinding off to other threads.
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:18:58 am »
When people say there were other pathfinding threads, they were serious. There was at least one 20+pages long with links to articles. Someone even wrote a webpage that demonstrated various techniques for path finding. Seriously, go look for that stuff. I believe there was a (failed?) DF pathfinding project already.

You don't need sqrt for euclidean metrics. Just compare the sums of squares. For arg>=0, sqrt(arg) is strictly increasing, therefore:
Let a, b, c > 0
sqrt(a*dx1^2 + b*dy1^2 + c*dz1^2) > sqrt(a*dx2^2 + b*dy2^2 + c*dz2^2) if and only if:
a*dx1^2 + b*dy1^2 + c*dz1^2 > a*dx2^2 + b*dy2^2 + c*dz2^2

Toady One said that there are some places where fork - join multithreading could help. I believe it is on his to-do list, along with x86-64 version, a long list of planned features, all those bug fixes on mantis and most of the things in ESV. It is just that it is a lot to do and DF's programmer has a strong preference for dealing with things that are fun to him first, such as adding new stuff, then doing some low hanging fruit bugfixes and only occasionally doing something else.

The pathfinding itself could likely benefit much more from further optimisations than multi-threading. Like thisisjimmy said, there is no guarantee that multiple instances of pathfinding run every frame. There are, however, some clever methods to accelerate A*. There were some articles linked on this forum about hierarchical pathfinding and some method that marks some tiles as hot-spots, then works on a graph of 'line-of-sight' visible hotspots.

Actually, I'd like:
a*dx^2 + b*dy^2 + c*dz^2 + ((dz != 0) ? d : 0 )

With 'c' and 'd' being variables in the init file. That way you can have 'c' only slightly higher than 'a' and 'b', but add a constant penalty 'd' for having to go find some stairs.

DF Suggestions / Re: easier setup for hauling routes
« on: June 30, 2012, 03:23:35 pm »
Transport Tycoon had a great system for railroads. As to two minecarts per track, is would be possible under these assumptions: A stop can accept more than one cart, but only one cart is ever allowed at a track without stops or semaphores. This would work like so:

0) A has 2 mine carts f and g.  B has none.
1) Mine cart f is loaded and is sent towards B. g is being loaded.
2) f reaches B. The track is now free. g can be sent or f can return.
3a) g reaches B, which now has both carts. The track is free, so one of them is immediately sent to A and then the other, because the cart at A will be empty upon arrival.
3b) f reaches A. Loaded g is immediately sent to B, while f is being filled.

This way there would be higher efficiency and no collisions.

(( Galena 263: Yet another captain's meeting. ))
(( 27 Felsite: Ocean Breeze and Diamond Shard wounded by FB. ))
(( 15 Malachite: Bardiche gets wounded by an FB again. ))
(( 28 Malachite: Arablest died to FB. ))
(( 20th to 26th Galena: Virtue poison joked. ))

After the discussion of the usual stuff, such as schedules for guard duty and crossbow bolt production, the topic of recent attacks in the mines comes up. Virtue shakes her head as she examines the map on her desk again. "I don't understand... there's nowhere else for them to be coming from..."

Indigo sighs "We checked the walls over and over and they should be safe. Nopony has any idea, where we made a mistake. Since we can't just wall off the old mine and dig up a new one, we have to assume these attacks will happen again. The military patrols help a great deal, but the only thing that could be done beyond that is a full-on civilian defence program. Basically giving everypony weapons and hoping for the best. Crossbows with metal ammunition, chaffrons and mail shirts would be sufficient, but the cost of that is really high and besides..."

Halberd laughs out loud and shakes his head. "Oh, that would be quite a sight. I can just imagine over a hundred ponies with no idea which way to point a crossbow running around in town." His expression turns more serious and he adds, "No, no... that's a terrible idea. I would give it three days before two ponies got in a fight and shot each other. Or foals..."

Naginata frowns and nods slowly. "Halberd is probably right... it might do us some good to expand the reserves maybe, but we just don't have the pony power and resources to train all of the civilians to use a crossbow. We have enough steel to make the gear, but it would take a very long time and overall I don't think it's practical. And Halberd is probably right about ponies getting into trouble with them."

Glaive speaks up. "While expanding the reserves is not a bad idea, I don't think it is wise to give out weapons to everypony in town, with the intent to let them carry them around all the time."

Fauchard nods in agreement. "Yes, I think Glaive is right about this. We should allow any who want to learn to defend themselves into the reserves, but I don't think we need to put everypony in town into some sort of ramshackle militia. I think that is asking for trouble."

"The idea may sound good in theory, but would be unreasonable in practice. It makes it harder to keep weapons out of violent situations that don't need them and the cost would be far to high." adds Partisan.

Virtue nervously taps her forehooves together on her desk. Just the thought of her children... Rose, Valor and Rampart... wearing armour and holding a weapon... sent chills down her spine. She had no doubt that many of the other parents in Dawnpick felt similarly. "I... think I agree. Besides... we haven't seen any hostile rainbow ponies in almost two years now."

Indigo nods "I agree and am not in favour of this idea myself. In addition to all these downsides, armour is uncomfortable and would slow ponies down when they should run away. Besides, some might think they actually can fight and try to be heroes with only marginally better chance to survive than unarmed civilians. This policy would also give the impression that Dawnpick declared marital law or is mobilising for something, or that we are wasting good steel, instead of sending it to Coupledye. It is overruled then." An emergency cache of weapons and ammo and occasional drills, but without actual issuing of weapons might do it, but so would expanding the reserves or the military, and we already have plenty of soldiers anyway.

Virtue slumps back into her seat with a bit of relief. "Alright then... is there anything else anypony wants to discuss?" Everypony looks at each other, then at Indigo, but he says nothing, so the meeting ends.

(( Indigo visits Fauchard in prison, a day or two after he got arrested for his fight with Jaxler. ))

Indigo heard about a recent fight between Jaxler and Fauchard. Jaxler punching somepony over some perceived slight is nothing unusual, but the surprise part is that Fauchard started it, broke Jaxler’s hoof and went to prison. Since Jaxler is in Indigo's squad, but is generally evasive and Fauchard is a friend (or pretty close to one anyway), the blue unicorn decided to go see him. In the evening he takes some food and a bucket of water, approaches the keep, states his business and is let in. As usual, Virtue tries to cover up for the fact that Indigo makes her uncomfortable. Seeing that he isn't there to argue, but just to visit Fauchard, she is rather relieved and allows him into the dungeons. He walks down the stairs, using his light spell, nods to the guard and approaches Fauchard's cell, keeping far enough from the bars to be outside the range of any kicks, just to be sure.

Indigo comes into view of Fauchard's cell. It has nothing fancy, but there is a bed, a bucket for water, another for refuse and a tray with a bowl for food. It is lit well enough to see and perhaps even read a book. Fauchard is laying on the bed. He doesn't appear asleep, but just laying on his back and staring at the ceiling. He rolls over when he hears a pony approaching his cell. “Oh, hello Indigo. Come to pay me a visit?”

Indigo sighs. “Something like that, but I never thought I'd see you in here. I expected better of you than to start bar fights.”

Fauchard rolls over onto his back and looks at the ceiling again as he says, “I did what I had to do. He insulted my family and did not listen to my warnings. I am sorry it had to happen though. I hope it won't get in the way of my future talks with him.”

Indigo rises his brow, but proceeds to replace Fauchard's water, clean his bowl and put some food into it. I hope you like carrots. “Yeah, he tends to be insulting at times, I just didn't expect, you would let him provoke you. I suppose you should take your 'future talks' into the barracks, if you haven't had enough of him by now.”

Fauchard gets out of bed and walks over to the food Indigo has brought him, “It is a shame he had to react in that way. I was just trying to talk to him about his drinking problem. It is such a tragedy to see him waste his potential like that, but he started insulting Friesden. If he had just kept it directed at me, I could have swallowed my own pride, but involving my family-” Fauchard tries to levitate a carrot, fails, remembers the wards, so instead he shoves the bowl away with a hoof and looks back to Indigo, “-that could not be tolerated.”

Having finished with food and water, Indigo moves away from the bars, stops surprised hearing Fauchard's explanation and takes another two steps back, when he looks at him. “For what it's worth, he is sober on duty, but finding him asleep somewhere in the morning is no fun at all. I told him to just drink in his room and not wander off, but he still does. Ugh, I suppose there is no helping it.” He frowns. “I don't really see, how any of this is connected to Friesden, though”

Fauchard sits down and shakes his head negatively. “After the 'chat' I had with him, I still think he can be helped. He just needs to believe in himself. I'm not too sure why he brought Friesden's name into it, but Glaive believes it may have something to do with her rejecting Granite's advances, as Granite and Jaxler are rather close.”

“Helped?” Indigo laughs. “From my experience, dealing with Jaxler is not about help, but about damage control. Making him drink less or be less stubborn would be like telling him not to breathe. Even his prison time did little to change him. No wonder, he didn't like your lecture. No, it is not about help, but about minimising the damage he causes as he gets through his day. If you still want to try to 'help' him, you are welcome to try, but please make sure, other ponies don't suffer needlessly because of the results.”

“Did it ever occur to you Indigo, that perhaps by agreeing with his idea that he can't change, you are only reinforcing it? Nopony is beyond help. I...I was in a worse state than he is now after my wife and daughter...passed away. It took years, but because I had ponies that still cared about me, I was able to recover from it. He just needs the same.”

Indigo momentarily gets serious and a bit sad. “Ah yes, for as long as I've known you, you had a soft spot for the sick, cripples, bastards and anypony who is at a disadvantage. A rather commendable... flaw. Don't get me wrong, if somepony is hungry and I have food, I can share it. If somepony needs some other basic necessity badly, I may provide it. But I won't get out of my way to help everypony, especially those who don't want to help themselves. I'll just offer my advice, then step aside and let them make their own choices and suffer the consequences. I simply don't see a way to help Jaxler, so I just let him be and try to minimise the damage he does to others.”

Fauchard looks down at the floor, “He may beyond help, but I can't just not try to help him. If he lacks the strength to pull himself out of this, then, very well, but I will at least throw him a rope.”

Looks like he just used it to pull you down. “I understand. For what it's worth, I respect your choice.” You are stronger than I ever was. “I won't stand in your way and may help you, as long as you ask me for reasonable things. As for Friesden, I'm not surprised, she rejected Granite. I was surprised she considered him in the first place." Maybe he was simply the first buck ever to take interest in her and show her some affection. "Jaxler and Granite are best buddies. I didn't get what Jaxler even sees in him, until he told me something during his prison time.” Indigo frowns. “Maybe I shouldn't talk about it.”

“Well, I won't insist you share it, but such information might be helpful, if you wish to tell me.” responds Fauchard.

Indigo takes a look at Saber and hesitantly walks up to the bars. “You would never tell me something like that yourself, you know... Fine,” he whispers, “Jaxler told me that Granite is his son. It does explain a lot about the annoying, thieving bastard, but why would Glaze cheat on Cleaver with Jaxler of all ponies, is beyond me.”

Fauchard nods, “I had no idea, but thank you for telling me. That information might prove useful.”

Indigo looks at a partially filled bucket of refuse and sighs. “You know, since I'm here, I may as well empty that for you. Once I get it out of this annoying suppressor, I won't even have to touch it to carry it.” He takes it and steps back. “So, would you like me to bring you anything? A book to help pass the time, perhaps? Only if you are allowed to have one of course, I'm not smuggling anything for you or breaking any other rules.”

Fauchard gets the bucket and places it where Indigo can take it, “I am allowed books, yes. If you could bring me a few from my room that would be much appreciated. Though, you will need to get the key from either Glaive or Friesden. Please, bring me a couple of novels, and a book of poetry, it doesn't matter which ones. That should last me a little while at least.”

“I'll just tell Glaive that you want some novels and a tome of poems, then.” Indigo takes away the waste, empties the bucket, cleans it and takes it back. Then he gives it to Fauchard, says goodbye and walks away with the now empty bucket, he used for bringing him water.

As Indigo walks away, Fauchard climbs back into his bed and thinks to himself, Indigo may have  a point about Jaxler, but I can't give up, not yet, not till I'm sure that I've given it my best shot.

(( NOTE: Glaive is informed about Fauchard's request, so he gets his books. Indigo visits him once or twice more before his sentence is done. ))

(( Summer 263 ))
(( NW corner: North of the trade depot, close to the trash compactor. ))

Balisong is practising her music magic at the NW corner of the wall surrounding the town, her eyes are closed and she is deep in concentration. The music is slow and steady, and sounds like a pony playing a piano. As her playing continues, the music begins to speed up and a second "instrument" sounding like a harp can be heard. Before long more instruments join in sounding like a violin and a cello as the music hits its high point. While the performance is not flawless and several missed or flawed notes can be heard, it is nerveless beautiful.

Indigo walks by, carrying a bucket of refuse, that can't be converted into wood, to the trash compactor. He notices playing Balisong, quietly stops about 10 meters from her, sits on his rump, closes his eyes and listens, enjoying it. He doesn't normally take breaks like this, but it has been a while since he last heard music and he can easily afford half an hour or so in his schedule for today.

Balisong opens her eyes a bit and notices Indigo sitting there. She is startled and her music cuts out with a squeak.

Indigo opens his eyes and looks at the scared Balisong with something of a smile. “That was nice. Why did you stop?”

Balisong begins to stammer a response, “He...hello. M.M.mister I.Indigo I di...didn't know anyp..pony was listening. I'm sorry.”

She is very timid. I need to be careful, what I say. “Sorry about what? I stopped to listen, but I can still finish my chores for today and I can leave at any time. You aren't disturbing me in any way and your concert was quite good.” says Indigo.

“I...I'm sorry, cause, I..I came over here to try and find a p..place to practice w...where nopony would h..have to hear me. I'll go someplace else next time.” responds Balisong timidly and quietly.

Indigo looks around. “No, this place is good. It is out of the way, you are still inside, and should be safe here. If you want me to go and not bother you again, I will, but tell me: Are you afraid that somepony won't like your music, or just don't want to get in anypony's way?”

Balisong says quietly, without looking in Indigo's eyes. “N...Nopony would like my music, and I don't want to bother them.”

Indigo perks his ears to hear what she says, but after years of talking to Amor, his hearing got quite good. “Ah... Well, I disagree. I liked it enough to stop and listen for a moment and you didn't bother me. Anyway, I'll be on my way now, so you can keep practising. Just... try to get used to having some audience. You will need to overcome your stage fright, if you are to be a musician. Goodbye.” No matter, what I say, she is still distracted by me just being around. Oh well, some ponies just don't like my company, just as there are some ponies, whose company I don't like. Indigo picks up his bucket of refuse, takes it to the trash compactor and goes back to work.

Balisong waits quietly until Indigo leaves. Once she is sure that she is alone, she returns to her practice.

A few days later Indigo talks with Fauchard. “I recently stumbled upon Balisong, practising her music by the trash compactor. She is very talented and can replace a small orchestra all by herself. She was afraid of me for some reason, though. Other ponies too, judging from what she said.”

Fauchard nods, "Yes, she is very talented. I suppose it comes with her being an alicorn, or maybe it's just her mother's musical talent showing through her magic. But regardless, don't take it personally, if she was uncomfortable around you Indigo. My granddaughter is afraid of nearly everypony outside her immediate family. I wish I knew how to help her overcome it."

Indigo scratches his horn. “Well, what do I do about it? Talk to her? Ignore her? I'm under the impression that she would like to turn invisible. If she is to become a musician, she must get used to playing in front of an audience...”

Fauchard interrupts, “Yes, she will, but... I would ask that you don't just ignore her when you see her because, well I think if she is ever going to overcome her fear of other ponies she needs to occasionally be taken out of her comfort zone.”

“Ah, well. I can do that, but I'll keep it brief. Otherwise I may push her too far, and that would end in her running away crying, being even more scared of other ponies and me having some very unpleasant conversations.” Indigo rolls his eyes. “I have a different idea, though. You said, she isn't afraid of you and the rest of your family. Ask her to play a few songs with Falcata on some occasions. Some private celebrations, like birthdays would be good. Have Falcata start, then ask Balisong to join. When she gets used to that, find out who her friends are and invite one or two. Then more. It could work.”

Fauchard nods in agreement. “That isn't a bad idea Indigo. She is more comfortable playing around her family. I'll give that idea a try, thank you.”

The two of them talk for a bit more of other matters, including military training. Finally they bid each other farewell and Indigo leaves.

(( NOTE: After that Indigo occasionally talks to Balisong and asks about her music, but she is still afraid of him, so their conversations are brief and uneventful. ))

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What is the maximum range of a crossbow?
« on: June 25, 2012, 05:49:38 am »
In 31.25 I've seen a legendary crossbow user shoot at targets about two screens away. Definietely more than 20 squares. I ordered them killed and there was nothing hostile between them, so he must have been deliberately shooting at very long range. He missed almost all the shots, though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Research: Crossbow with axe and shield.
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:31:14 am »
I use DF 31.25 with MLP mod 1.71. Basically you play as a race of intelligent horses, with unicorns having 2 grips: mouth and horn (telekinesis). Mouth is roughly equivalent to right hand and horn to left hand.

Glossary:
When you go to m->e->squad->dwarf, you have equipment list.
When you do v->i on a dwarf, you see inventory list.

I've run into an issue, where a unicorn equipped with a crossbow, axe and shield didn't fire his crossbow, despite having quiver and bolts, so I decided to do some research.

I did a lot of tests and finally figured out backup weapons, I think. The unicorn keeps weapons in the mouth and shield with horn. He has a very strong preference for the first weapon in his inventory. Therefore the correct order for equipment list is:
1) Unforbid all weapons currently in inventory.
2) Go to squads -> equipment and remove weapons and shield. Wait until dwarf empties them from inventory, and carries then all to stockpiles (about a minute).
3) Assign: Shield, Crossbow, Battle Axe in this exact order.
The result is that he will use his crossbow and spray bolts at the enemy (Which gives him the advantage of range). Once out of ammo, or engaged, he will switch to close combat. He will use his shield, but unfortunately he will hit with his crossbow 95% of the time. The remaining 5% is what gives him an advantage over pure crossbow user.

Weapons are held in mouth and a shield is held by horn. Contrary to what some people say (maybe they talk about 0.34?) you don't need a free grip to fire a crossbow. That's why Pegasai (who only have mouth and no horn) can do it. Therefore having a shield is not a problem. The problem is that a dwarf uses the first weapon on inventory list about 95% of the time. Therefore if the dwarf equips a crossbow and an axe, what happens depends on their order. If axe is first on the inventory list, the dwarf won't fire his crossbow, and just charge into melee and use the Axe. If crossbow is first, the dwarf will fire it until he empties the quiver, then charge and use the crossbow as melee weapon. After a few pages of hitting the enemy with it, Axe will occasionally be used. Another problem with this setup is upgrading quality: A dwarf who picked up a -crossbow- and an =Axe=, then upgraded the +crossbow+, puts it at the end of his inventory list. This results in going melee with the axe.

I also found out that firing 25 wooden bolts from -crossbow- by a newb misses most of the time, barely softens the enemy up and generates 30*25 EXP for both crossbow and archer skills. With a masterwork crossbow, my test subject was able to hit much more often, despite being a newb. Silver crossbow may help a bit, but I got pages of 'Pony hits Animal with -steel crossbow-, damaging the skull, so I doubt silver will help much. Emptying a quiver at an archery target granted only 150 EXP to those skills, 5 times less.

In one 31.25 fort, I tried dual-wielding two weapons and two shields, but it resulted in weird bugs with dwarves having problems equipping terminator armour.

TL;DR: The weapon higher on the inventory list is almost always used, unless forbidden. When a dwarf upgrades equipment, the new item is at the bottom of their inventory list. You don't need a free grip to fire a crossbow. The equipment list is important in determining which items are obtained first and are therefore lower on the inventory list.

Can anyone confirm or correct my findings?

(( 13th Slate, 263, shortly after the bin incident. ))

As Indigo approaches the keep and petitions Fuscina to enter, the mare shakes her head and raises a hoof to forestall the unicorn. "Sorry Indigo, Virtue isn't seeing anypony today. If something isn't on fire, you'll need to come back later."

Indigo is dumbfounded for a short while. This is the first time he is denied an audience. Ah, the tappings of power. She is going to have ponies waiting to see her now. A rather sudden change in attitude, but it is consistent with the bin punishment. Looks as if she has finally decided to demand proper respect from her subjects. I'll have to be extra careful around her from now on. "When may I come back then?" asks Indigo after a moment of stunned silence.

Fuscina sighs and looks back to the door behind her briefly, recalling the very emotional conversation that she had witnessed not long before. "I'd give it a couple of days if I were you..." She watches the unicorn slowly turn back and leave.

(( 15th Slate, 263 ))

Indigo comes to the keep again, and is reluctantly left inside. He wears his best robe and no saddlebags. He slowly approaches the Baronesses desk, stands in respectful distance from it and bows. "Hello Lady Virtue."

Virtue hadn't long managed to work up the will to return to her office, and she still really didn't feel like being there. In fact, she never wanted to be there again, but that wasn't much of an option. She sits up slightly as Indigo enters, but fails to notice his attire until he makes the overly formal bow in front of her. If she didn't feel so much like just dragging herself back to bed, she might have questioned the motion. Instead, she just sighs mentally and tries to put on a welcoming face, which came off a lot less inviting than she had hoped. "Hello Indigo... how can I help you?"

Careful now. "Well, um... My Lady, you made it quite clear that we are not supposed to carry bins to the trade depot. They were really convenient for it, though and of course they could simply be emptied at the depot and carried back to the warehouse. Well, the thing I'd like to ask about, is how are we expected to carry trade goods without containers? Carrying them one by one is of course possible, but will take up much more time." asks Indigo hesitantly.

Virtue's half-hearted smile immediately vanishes to be replaced with a concerned frown. Fantastic. This conversation was almost exactly the worst thing that he could have wanted to bring up. "Indigo... that was a horrible misunderstanding." She chews her lip and tries to avoid dwelling on the consequences of it too much. "...horrible..." As her eyes return to him, she adds, "Please... continue to use the bins like they're supposed to be used."

Indigo feels as if the ground under his hooves was burning. Somepony had to try and clear this up, but why do I always get involved in slippery situations? "Misunderstanding? Well... I... we will do as you order of course. It is just that, please understand My Lady, the bins were used to carry goods to the depot in the past and there were never any problems with it. Recently a few ponies were punished for this, some very severely, but with little explanation. I only ask that you make the rules very clear beforehoof, so that no further punishments will be necessary. Please forgive my boldness, but until recently the ponies of Dawnpick liked you, but didn't fear you. If this is how you decided to... command more respect from your subjects, there are smoother and less terrifying ways to do that." Indigo can't quite make up his mind weather to make a submissive gesture or send her a false smile and ends up doing a mixture of both.

Virtue is stunned by this comment. She stumbles over a few half-words and settles on a profoundly hurt expression. Did he really think she was capable of such a terrible thing, much less that she did it intentionally to command respect? What kind of pony did he think she was? Had thirteen years not been long enough to convince everypony in Dawnpick that she would never do such a thing? "Indigo... do... do you really think that's what happened? You think I did this to command respect?" She covers her face with a hoof and says, "I didn't do this... I... I would never do something like this..." She looks aside and says, "The order Jury received was forged. Somepony else wrote it... and signed my name to it."

"Falsified?!" Indigo sits on his rump and stares at the wall behind Virtue. After a moment he regains composure and speaks. "Ah, yes. That makes sense. If you don't mind me saying so, you were always very permissive and therefore a very severe punishment for something so minor seemed very out of character for you. It got me very concerned. The fact that the document was falsified is both reassuring and worrying, but for different reasons. Is there an investigation into this? Have you considered, who could do something like this and why?"

Indigo's response was almost reassuring. He clearly thought something was wrong with the order... maybe he was just being careful instead of accusing her of such a terrible thing. Still, it cemented in her head that ponies in Dawnpick probably did think she'd lost her mind. She sighs and nods. "I asked Jury and Partisan to investigate it immediately. And not to trust anything with my name on it without seeing me first. I don't know who in Dawnpick would be capable of something like this..."

Indigo is almost back to his former self. "I see. Partisan is currently depressed and drunk, so I guess I'll have to do something about it or talk to his second in command, Kat. She is quite dutiful and this is too important for our old grievances to get in the way. In any case, I think you could help by talking to the guard about how the documents are usually delivered, who could have dropped it, who might have access to your seal... although it could be falsified by any half decent carver who saw it on some document. Also, is there anypony, who could have some grievances against any of the victims? There are a lot of such little details that could provide insight into this matter."

Virtue swallows hard and nods understandingly. Jury had been torn up enough about what happened, as cold hearted as she was, so the pony who had been forced to deliver the beatings would surely have fared worse. She was beginning to feel awful all over again... just how many ponies had been hurt by this? "Yes... this is all a bit past my expertise. I trust Partisan, Kat, or anypony in the guard to do all that they can."

Indigo frowns "More importantly, who could have a motive to do this? I see two possibilities. The first one is stupidity. Some misguided and officious pony could have made the document in your name, trying to impress you. Of course this explanation is quite ridiculous and I wouldn't suspect Jury. She is arrogant, but dutiful and obeys the rules. It could be some kind of prank by a foal, maybe. If that's the case, I would expect the culprit to deny it, but show fear when asked about it."

He continues. "The second explanation is malice. Such an act is sure to sow dissent, fear and mistrust among the citizens of Dawnpick. It also crippled and undermined our justice department. Whoever did this wanted to weaken us. I never told you, but I suspected there was some kind of spy in Dawnpick for years. I kept it to myself, because I could never figure out the culprit. My theory is that this pony is somehow feeding information to the bandits attacking us from time to time and a bold move like this indicates two things. There may be further acts of sabotage in Dawnpick soon and all of this can be in a preparation for some major attack."

Virtue's continued nodding finally comes to an end as Indigo pauses, and she says, "Well... the first theory that came up was that it was done by the rainbow ponies to try to undermine us, since trying to kill me directly hasn't worked yet." She shudders mentally, but presses on. "That makes the most sense to me... but another spy, maybe one who has lived here for years... that makes more sense than I wished it did. That could explain what happened to the rainbow diplomat, and Wool..." She stops and shakes her head. "No... I don't have any proof of that. If... if you do though, please let me know."

Indigo grits his teeth. "I had some suspicions years ago, but was never able to confirm them. Later I figured that the bandits seem to follow the caravans. Then our defences got strong enough so that just a few attackers couldn't do much... Maybe Gregor was involved, but that would be too obvious and too clumsy for somepony with his kind of information about Dawnpick. Forging this document had a pretty good chance of failure; in fact I'm very surprised, Partisan didn't confirm it before following through with it."

Indigo continues "Your theory actually makes much more sense. If those assassins were able to make it to the keep, then Partisan's office is a much easier target. Besides, he mentioned something about the document just being on his desk. The severity and strange reason for the punishment also make some sense in this context. Using bins for trading is common knowledge and well... some rulers would actually administer punishments this severe. Therefore somepony with minimal knowledge of Dawnpick, possibly obtained from coming here with a caravan, could come up with a document like this by shooting in the dark."

"I just... I wish Partisan and Jury had come to me first... so much could have been avoided..."

"Well, for what it's worth, most of the backslash from this has been against Jury and Partisan, not you. Still, while the damage is done, I believe this matter should be explained to the public, before the resentment gets any worse. If you don't want to do it yourself, have the mayor make an announcement in the dining hall. It is better to let ponies know that some documents may be forged than to have them think, they can expect very severe punishments for nothing." says Indigo.

"You're probably right," she says in a weak voice, having already come to the same conclusion herself. Hiding in the keep was only going to foster rumours and hard feelings, although she didn't know if there was anything that could fix the damage with what was left of Savory's family at this point. Worst of all, she didn't want Partisan or Jury to suffer needlessly through this. They could have avoided a tremendous amount of grief if they had just come to her first... but that was behind them now. "I'll... call a meeting. Tomorrow, I think. I hope this can still be cleared up..." Already she was beginning to feel a bit queasy. She hadn't set hoof outside to look anypony in the eye since the incident, much less the whole town. That probably wouldn't end well...

Now at least I know what happened, but still don't know what to do. "Lady Virtue, I think I should go now. I intend to see Partisan and talk to him about the investigation and our theories, yours in particular. I can also talk to the mayor about tomorrow's meeting. If there is anything else you want me to do, just tell me."

Virtue slumps a bit and says, "If you happen to see Longshot, tell him to come see me. Other than that, I don't think there's anything you can do..."

"Goodbye then, My Lady. Please try to prepare yourself for tomorrow. An explanation for all this is needed badly." Indigo turns to leave and swallows hard, then looks back at her. "I'm sorry, I... at first I thought you passed that judgement." Indigo bites his lip, bows and leaves, looking tired and old. He goes to Partisan's office next, without looking forward to the conversation at all. After that he visits Longshot and finally invites Amor for a talk in his room.

Virtue places her face in her hooves as she props her elbows on her desk.  She seemed shocked when Indigo believed she issued the punishment, but how was he supposed to react?  It had come with her name on it, and her seal. Why would anypony think anything else? She sighs and shakes her head, with her face still covered by her hoof. Everypony in Dawnpick would be thinking the same thing. How was she going to face them all? What was she going to say?

At least she had some time to think about it...

(( NOTE: Indigo talks to Partisan, Longshot and maybe Jury about this. And Amor of course. Virtue either explains the forgery herself or has somepony else do it in her stead the following day. There probably won't be a scene of this meeting, but it happened on 16th Slate in the evening and the forgery becomes common knowledge, which eases the social tensions a bit. Though I imagine somepony from Savory's family, likely Storm Cloud or Detergent, had a few nasty things to say. ))

(( NOTE: From this day on, Indigo is more formal and polite when dealing with Virtue, just in case. ))

(( NOTE: While Indigo may be involved in the background, please feel free to resolve the bin crisis among yourselves. I don't expect the investigation to yield any results in any case. ))

(( NOTE: Funny, but somewhere in Dawnpick there is a statue of Virtue holding a bin. Psalms said it was close to the centre of the statue garden. ))

(( NOTE: An FB escaped into the mines in Felsite and two more in Malachite. This could be considered  acts of sabotage. ))
