DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your best artifact ever
« on: May 14, 2011, 05:17:11 am »
"The Equal Jewel", a yellow zircon crown in my old fortress. I used a bit of planepacking on it and it's so awesome that in my current fortress it still gets engraved everywhere. I like to RP that it's the crown of all dwarfkind. When my fortress finally crumbles I'll send an adventurer out to find it, though since it's a 31.12 world that's about all there is for an adventurer to do...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 14, 2011, 05:03:39 am »
I was just laying down some obsidian cladding around a candy vein (which ended up sealing it off completely with water. Whoops) when a fire man jumped out. It ran straight through the booze stockpile with no explosions somehow, to attack my legendary carpenter, legendary armourer and legendary engraver (the same one who found the goblin ambush earlier). Why they were down there I have no idea. But just as it was breathing fire everywhere, my best militia captain came charging down the stairs, rugby tackled it from behind, and finished it off with his candy battleaxe.

He nearly died from the bleeding and burns afterward though...

Just a small thought, but the prospect of having the dead come back to life makes having fully sealed crypts something of a priority, in my eyes - wall them up once occupied, unless you want to be attacked from within by a hundred skeletal dwarves...

I was convinced my 16-year old wealthy fort was totally goblin- and kobold- free. Now I'm spotting thieves at every door and ambushes at every gate. I don't know what happened, but I think since I updated straight from 31.14, maybe there was an old bug stopping invasions or suchlike. It's lucky that my wall and moat were mostly finished by the time this started.

The most epic thing that happened, besides the caravan running right into a marksgoblin ambush, was when my legendary engraver spotted an ambush while heading to reload a cage trap (he shouldn't have been outside in the first place). As he fled I frantically summoned all my troops but they were mostly far away.

The engraver fled in panic along the edge of the moat. As he passed the gate, a lone figure sprang out. It was my lasher, now a skilled axedwarf, who had now gone and found himself a goblinite whip. Only he stood between a dozen speargoblins and one of the most valuable dwarves in the fort...

The first collapsed in pain after several strokes, finished by crushing his skull. Then the lasher went after the others, bringing another down before the remainder simply fled in panic before the dwarven tornado of lashing fury.

I was a bit disappointed actually, I was hoping he would have to make a Boromir-like last stand against overwhelming odds, but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth either :) From now on no one leaves the safety of the walls without military escort!

Normally they only sit around when the workshop they want is not available. Are the workshops forbidden? Or does the dwarf have another skill, like masonry or metalcrafter, that needs a different workshop?

What are the dwarf's skills? He should demand the workshop that corresponds with the highest moodable skill he has. If he doesn't have any moodable skills (only thresher or soapmaker etc) then he'll go for craftsdwarf as default.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Yarn demands and an older version
« on: May 13, 2011, 09:57:29 am »
My world was genned in 31.12, I've now updated it to 31.25 and I've got a situation on my hands.

A moody woodcrafter is demanding yarn cloth. I've never seen this stuff, and according to the wiki it comes from shearing sheep, alpacas, llamas and trolls... all of which wouldn't exist in a pre 31.18 world. Well, except for the trolls, but I've only ever seen one of those and it died a long, long time ago. Is it even possible to meet this demand then? Perhaps the caravan might bring it? Or am I doomed to a long series of mad dwarves if they demand yarn?

Thieves won't survive stealing alcohol if it's on fire. Sounds like a pretty good defence system to me.

A large network of plump helmet farms to keep all the dwarves fed.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: game speed

The game moves stepwise (as in you make one step/move/attack etc, then everything else does). So I don't believe you can change it.

It doesn't take all that long, if it's only the major living areas that are being cleared. If necessary Besmar cand do it all herself, but IMO that is what a couple of Urists are for...

Also, and perhaps of rather more major concern, was that a GCS in one of the cavern screenshots?

I'm OK with aquifers, they're much better for your FPS than rivers and provide a lot of advantages too. Sure, it's annoying to get through them (my fort was nearly destroyed by tantrum spirals while trying to get through the 2Z level aquifer) but once you're through they're not really a problem again. The only thing you have to be careful with is digging upwards from below, as sometimes they are lower in some parts than in others. This is not at all related to the time I flooded my entire dining room...

As another batch of soap was stamped, Besmar headed for a drink. And promptly fell over a lump of rock. She cursed as she scraped the dust off herself. Boulders everywhere. The place had never been properly cleared, and no URISTS had emerged to do anything about it. "This is ridiculous," she declared, as no fortress could possibly be clean and tidy with heaps of stone and gravel everywhere.

Moving into the dining room, she spotted a large group of dwarves surrounding a heavily beaten and battered dwarf - the blacksmith, possibly, but she didn't like to get too familiar so she didn't know for sure. "URISTS!" Besmar demanded. "Aren't you haulers meant to be working? Do you have any idea how much junk there is around this place? How are we meant to keep the dust off the surfaces when they're buried under twenty tons of stone?"

The dwarves looked at her blankly. Eventually one of them volunteered "Erm.. making blocks, out of them..."

"This won't do! Clearly our masonry dwarves are overwhelmed with the amount of work they have. How about piling it all into one place out of the way?"

"Oh... um... never thought of that..."

OOC: If I read the screenshot aright there's an awful lot of stray rock left lying around. Most unsightly. Therefore, since we don't seem to have proper stockpiles I suggest dumping them into a corner near the masons' workshops so they're both accessible and out of the way.The Urists can do that of course, Besmar has more important things to do in the form of more soap :P A clean fortress is an organised fortress...

That's probably quite a lethal weapon, except your movement speed would be so ridiculously slow that you'd never catch anything...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: kobolds
« on: May 10, 2011, 12:46:11 pm »
I thought I had no kobolds in my world. No goblins either for that matter. The fort's fairly mature, and I just passed 10,000,000 created wealth. Suddenly:

"Thief! Protect the hoard from skulking filth!"

Just goes to show, never take anything for granted. Strange that it took them so long to go for my fort... unless they've been nicking stuff for years and we only just noticed...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: No demonstrations?

Aha! You're right. The schedule I've always been looking at only applies when the civilian alert is active (ie all the civvies are sent to hide in the lower levels) For some reason the squads are only set to train then, when they'll most likely be out killing stuff. I corrected the orders, hopefully they'll work now. Thanks for the help :)

And as soon as I did that, the militia captains all went to "Organize Combat Training" :D

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Scratching Hill Titan's brain
« on: May 10, 2011, 08:17:18 am »
I had about two or three adventurers killed by the same slug titan. It wasn't especially dangerous, but it was damned impossible to kill because it had no limbs to remove and its vital organs were few and near-impossible to reach. One of them got his head smashed by a lucky push - the other kept slugging hehe away at it until he passed out from exaustion.

I gave titans a wide berth after that...
