They're all on active alert, but no, I haven't seen any of them sparring...

Forgotten beast attacked. Killed by my soldiers, hastily used dfcleanmap to get rid of the ichor.
Some soldiers were affected byy the ichor, but survived.
Finally get around to designating an outdoor graveyard, at the sime time sending out my large masonry team to continue construction of the walls.

It rained. The FB body leaves a large trail of ichor...
Vomiting dwarves EVERYWHERE!

By far the most valuable artifact yet :D

Quote
Duradas Keshamneth, "Beardcave the Curious Balance", a adamantine anvil.
This is a adamantine anvil. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with schist and microcline and encircled with bands of adamantine, elk bird bone and emerald. This object menaces with spikes of cave spider silk.
On the item is an image of dwarves in saguaro rib wood. The dwarves are labouring. The artwork relates to the foundation of Tinfound by The Eternal Creation of The Healing Board in the early spring of 261.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No demonstrations?
« on: May 10, 2011, 04:30:21 am »
Just a small question, but I don't see my dwarves doing any demonstrations, like "Dodging Demonstration" etc, during military training. I'm sure they used to a while ago, and I don't think they learn as fast by hanging around doing individual drill. Does anyone know why this might happen?

It's considered cheesy, but yes.

Build and raise bridges all around the edge of the map, blocking every edge tile except the ones where you want visitors (migrants, sieges, caravans) to appear.

Ah poo.  I was hoping to keep sieges off the bridge.  Still thanks for the info.

IIRC it also works if you make your bridge be the only wagon-usable path to the trade depot (ie 3 tiles wide with no stairs). Even though caravans don't use wagons, they'll still only spawn on a wagon-usable path. That's what I've heard anyway...

Well, this is interesting. A forgotten beast in the form of a giant hairy snail attacked, my soldiers killed it, but two of them and a dog caught a syndrome, I think it had deadly vapours or something.

The syndrome caused extreme nausea, drowsiness and numbness, which eventually cleared up with much vomiting. It seemed to cause some kind of bleeding too, but that didn't last very long. Now all the affected dwarves' body parts are shown in yellow, apart from ears, nose, throat, cheeks and eyelids which are brown. There's no entry in the description, and they don't need a diagnosis, so I don't think they have any necrosis going on (I certainly hope not, one of them is my best militia captain). But they are listed as having "sensory nerve damage". Does this mean they will feel no pain at all? Or only in the brown-coloured parts?

I thought it was when someone lower down in the order of precedence (so for the baron, the mayor and any non-nobles) had a better room than them... You sure that's not happening anywhere?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: TANTRUM SPIRAL INBOOOUUUUND!
« on: May 05, 2011, 04:41:59 am »
Also (and this can be quite critical) keep a very close eye on your miners, woodcutters and probably hunters too. And especially your military. If anyone looks like they're getting unhappy, remove them from duty, because you do NOT want a berserk dwarf running around with a +steel axe+ or anything like that.

In my fort's early days we had a large tantrum spiral due to dead babies and then a cave-in which killed nearly all the miners. The population went from 72 to 8. And most of those kills were down to two berserk woodcutters with copper axes, who are still getting engraved in about every available surface on my fortress...

Don't actually lock down the soapmaking workshop (though a door on it would be handy), Besmar would be too concerned if anyone "forgets" to keep the food supplies running :P

Besmar can carry on with her paranoia, keeping as little contact with the other dwarves as possible. Trust no one...

Spent days of work creating a magma piston, carving out magma forges, pumping the surprisingly small amount of magma over to my minimally-sized cistern (more like a set of trenches)...

There are a few rogue 3/7s left to screw up the forges. Nearest magma is 35 Z levels down...

For the first and hopefully last time ever, it's time to reach for dfliquids...

Dear Urist McHunter,

Considering that you're new to this job, it might be a better idea to keep hunting elk birds rather than attacking that cave crocodile over there...

The Management

Dear Undertakers of Akrulatol,

Get another coffin ready.

Nope, it does get a bonus but it's not THAT good. Artifact weapons made from rubbish materials are still pretty rubbish.

I've never seen a chiled make weapons before though, normally they only make crafts because they don't have any other skills. So congratulations on that, at least.

all my extra dwarves have Masonry & Stone detailing activated. They all go for a megaproject.

Or, alteratively, i engrave *insert triumphant pose here* THE WHOLE F*****G MAP!!!!!!!!

Engraved on the wall is a superiorly designed image of Iados the overseer and dwarves by Urist McEngraver. Iados is striking a triumphant pose. The dwarves are weeping. The artwork relates to the engraving of the entire map in Dwarffortress in 276.

Modern processors are still faster than old ones though, even if the clock speeds don't look like it. Remember that there's more to a CPU than the number of GHz it has. As I understand it, that indicates how fast it does one cycle - more advanced architecture allows an i3 for example to do more in that cycle than an old Pentium would. So clock speeds can be misleading.

In the midst of the panic, Besmar McHolmes sat and scribbled in her diary:

"Goblins... a foul force of unwashed darkness. The militia are outmatched. We have barred the gates, but whether that will hold them I don't...."

She went looking for some dwarven wine to cheer her up.
