DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Wood Industry Flowchart
« on: December 08, 2010, 04:05:12 pm »
Yea, the wood furnace does not require any fuel to work, after all, the first fuel you can get is Charcoal from burning wood. Also, the glass furnace requires sand and pearlash to make clear or crystal glass, not just pearlash. And you might want to add wood+ballista arrow head = seige ammo to the siege workshop.

dfreveal will show aquifers - just be careful to not unpause, but hit 'd' 'm' to designate a mining area - aquifers (and any other wet stone features, e.g. river borders, etc...) will blink blue.
Aquifiers don't show up as wet stone though, do they? I thought the wet stone warning only happened if the water was actually there, and aquifiers don't produce water until a side is open.

Yea, just tested it. Either the game lied about there being an aquifier or the aquifier tiles don't automatically show up as wet.

Aquifers are geology related and the wet tiles probably come from water being nearby/the tiles being open to air. Currently, dfhack only reads the layer materials from the geology data, so a bit of research would be required. But then we could flip those bits and get rid of those pesky things .. or just see them ;)

Visibility is all I'm looking for in this case (no other source of water until I'm ready to brave the caverns). If you could make some tool to locate aquifiers I would be very appreciative  :)

Don't breach the caverns until you are prepared to defend, or wall it up afterward.

you can actually turn the caverns and deeper spoilers off in advanced worldgen

If you smooth or build a standalone wall, or a wall at the end of a line of walls, you get a circle, representing it as a pillar.

Is there any way to use DFhack to locate aquifers? I'm currently on a multi-biome embark (volcano and sand desert), and I was relying on the existence of an aquifer layer the embark screen said was in the desert, but I can't seem to find it. I downloaded this with the idea of using DFreveal to locate it, but it doesn't distinguish between aquifer sand and regular sand. Any advice? other than just digging holes until I manage to find it?

Systematically culled 90% of the fort's children and babies due to FPS issues. The resulting tantrum spiral killed about 200 dwarves. Oops.

Look on the bright side. More FPS now  :D

.... Funnily enough, I've observed a dorf or two that's soooo helpful, they'll bring a bucket of water to someone as soon as he gets thirsty. Take it right to him ... while he's at the booze stockpile chugging some Dwarven beer ...

Urist McHelpful: Come on man, water is so much better for your body.
Urist McDrunk: Ach, away with ye elf lover!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question About magma smelters
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:59:47 pm »
I map out a LARGE area (enough for several forges, smelters, etc), then fill it to 7/7 (no sloshing, etc), then pour water over the only way the magma gets in, so it stays 7/7 forever.  Easier on the processor, easier on the player.

Would not a floodgate accomplish he same thing?

floodgates can be destroyed by building destroyers, at least one of which can live in magma. a cast obsidian wall is impenetrable.

It allows the 2 3X1 rooms at the end of each corridor, cutting it down to 1 wide corridors would reduce it to 1 at the end of each hall, or converting them to 2 wide would allow a 2X3 room at the end of each hallway. Nice aesthetic with this though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Steel Industry needs power!
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:23:58 pm »
well.... i have tons of iron ore and dolomite so im good for the steel components. Its just that i have dug past 50 z-levels of crap and no magma yet. any idea which z-level is the magma sea>

dolomite

Mine out your dolomite layers. Dolomite, as all sedimentary layers, can contain Lingite and bituminous coal which can be turned into fuel at a smelter (each use 1 unit of fuel to smelt, coal becomes 3 units of fuel and lingite 2 units, giving a net gain of 2 and 1 if you're using a conventional smelter). Magma makes things more convenient, but unless you planned ahead and embarked on a volcano, it's a lot easier to just use coal to fuel things. Dig out a bunch, quantum-stockpile it by your forges, set one or two to constantly make it into fuel.

I was having FPS issues so I sent 80% of my population to stand under a raising bridge and pulled the lever.

I can top this, I opened the HFS because I was having FPS issues

That's somewhat counterintuitive...

Dwarves are more willing to drink water if you have a well, though you need a rope or chain for that.
