I appreciate you and the other 10 migrants who came to help my fortress this summer. However, respectful as your fishing skill is, I question the wisdom of coming to a desert with fishing as your only marketable skill.

careful, DT gets buggy around mining and woodcutting, it assigns them the labor without assigning them a pick/axe to do it with. Mining and woodcutting have to be designated within the game.

Getting distracted halfway through embark, and as a result giving two of my dwarves woodcutting in terrain with no wood.
Theres always caverns.

doesn't reduce the level of facepalm I had when I started looking around for trees to chop...

anyone frozen in ice is dead, no two ways about it. On the bright side, metal items are preserved, including those pickaxes, if you mine out the square they died in.

I think the ramp has to go in a certain direction, my dwarves get confused and wont use ramps if I build out from them a certain way.

- = floor
\ or / = ramp
x = solid wall

confuses my dwarves. I think you have to be able to go in a certain direction while going over  the ramp (if the only direction you can move is east, you have to be able to keep moving east down the ramp).

Okay, in the end I've gone with both of TwilightDusk's suggestions on both accounts (so many thanks to you good sir), but thanks to all for your suggestions. I can now drop my nobles down an 80-storey shaft into a spike pit with impunity >:)
