DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: First thoughts.

I'm probably going to wait a bit both for bugfix waves and because I just made some new embarks in the old version.

I have to say though, "demons masquerading as gods will try a little harder" is somehow hilarious to me.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tiki Dwarves!

So after my last embark failed to be in range of any goblins, I'm trying again in a new world map and came across this.

I made a backup to see what the area around the volcano looks like and here's what I've got.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The very top is two Z-levels up, with the portion on the left plateauing very nicely and in a way that overlooks the volcano. The embark area was made larger than I plan to actually use, but I used the extra size to verify that it goes down in steep cliffs in every direction from here, the 4 Z levels here (2 above, this level, and you can see some spots on top one Z-level down) are the only spots with flat land until I go far further out than the laptop I'm playing on could handle actually running while still having the volcano on the embark.

I also found this in Legends.

Clearly this is a sign that I should create a Dwarven outpost dedicated to the Volcano goddess! Stone shrines dotting the mountain, a sacrificial altar lined with statues depicting her glory! (and any statues of other gods will be SACRIFICED TO APPEASE THE VOLCANOES WRATH ALONG WITH THE CRAFTSMAN FOOLISH ENOUGH TO CARVE IT!)

The downside is that being an island, the only traders I'll ever get will be the Dwarf mountainhomes, so no elves or humans or goblins to sacrifice to her glory, though it does mean that aside from wildlife, the odd megabeast, or me breaching the caverns, I should have all the time in the world to build.

So, thoughts? Should I do this? Any ideas for what specifically to build, or what customs I should impose? (like, yearly or seasonal sacrifices or such?)

Well it got built, and I got my items finally. Now I'm having fun with a river. (Which unfroze Right when my dwarves were installing floodgates) :)
Urist: Hey McDwarf? It's getting into spring, do you think it's safe to be walking on the riverbed like this?
McDwarf: Don't be a fool, tha ice is still solid as a rock, see?

Embarking on a volcano in the middle of a tundra, and playing for 3 years, during which much of my time was building up in preparation for Goblins to come attack me...before I bothered to check and see that there are, in fact, no Goblin civilizations in this world, or at least not any near enough to bother me. So much work preparing for goblins to come...all for nothing.

war with humans and pointy-ears

It's just not the same....

The fortress itself is stable and prosperous in this peacetime setup though, I'll probably keep the fortress and ultimately the world around for when I want to experiment with stuff and don't want to be bothered by goblins.

The elves and humans are also at war with each other though, I kind of feel like trapping the elven caravan in my fort until the humans arrive one year...

how adding something totally random can be considered "hard" is beyond my grasp :-/

While I agree it falls more on the side of fake/manufactured difficulty as opposed to real/challenging difficulty, it's difficulty nonetheless. Winning the lottery is totally random, so would you say that winning the lottery isn't hard?

Refresh my memory, NaNo?

probably referring to National Novel Writing Month, it's a challenge to write a (IIRC) 10,000 word story over the course of November.

Arceth Deadplan, the diety of games, death, and suicide.
Shesam, the diety of love, wealth, and jewels.

you could have a "Last Dwarves" scenario, the first 2 migrant waves are hardcoded but that's all the dwarves you get outside of childbirth.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Locating Clusters

You get an announcement when you strike a cluster of anything...beyond that I can't offer any advice, beyond perhaps mining things out when you find them rather than leaving them laying around.

You're trying to stockpile items on top of a workshop to make them easier to access?

The game has an eerie tenancy to name things significantly in this game.

Also, welcome to the forums  :) Don't ever be afraid to ask questions in here.

You can trade coins. A stack of 500 coins is worth 10 times the value of the bar used to mint them, but don't have any quality modifiers.
