DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problem, Shrubs? Tower-Caps?

So, they can't grow through any smooth stone but they CAN grow through clay? Ah, ok, was worrying about my bedrooms being covered in Shrubs and Tower-Caps.

DF Gameplay Questions / Problem, Shrubs? Tower-Caps?

Ok so recently, I breached a cavern layer. Immediately after, things like Shrubs and Tower-Caps started growing in my fort. I know it's from the cavern layer, but they are REALLY getting on my nerves. I don't want to cover my floors with empty stockpiles as that just looks ugly, so is there any way to prevent them from growing in my fort? Also, can they grow through smooth stone?

On this fort I have more than one soil layer above the aquifer...

Except uh, I don't have any of the materials to exactly build a wall to support the block which is going to fall, nor do I have the materials to build a lever and a support.

I'll cheat if I have to, spending 10+ hours getting through 2 layers of aquifer is disgraceful.

They should at least add something making it easier to get past an aquifer, they clearly don't want us getting past it and the methods could be considered as exploits, because surely they're expecting us to find a way around it. I would find a way around it, but if the hole in the aquifer lasts for 2 layers I'd need to be the luckiest person around here. If a new player doesn't know about the aquifer and embarks, they clearly wouldn't have ANY idea whatsoever about the methods, and there is no easy way to get past an aquifer when you first start therefore making it almost impossible for people like me.

Is there any way I can hack the aquifer to be gone?

Problem, I built a stairway through the centre blocks but this happened;

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Is it impossible to get past an aquifer without your dwarves getting stuck, drowning, being encased in ice, or flooding your entire area?

I've been trying for 10+ hours...

I almost had it, but it seems there are 3 layers of aquifer.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I tried to build an up/down stairway through that and then channelling through those ice blocks to freeze up the area underneath but it didn't work... It became flooded completely. The block in the middle is flooded therefore I think I'm pretty much screwed.

Dang, my miners drowned, time to abandon my settlement for the 25th time.

Aha, I managed to get through one layer of aquifer... But...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My dwarf can use the up/down staircase to travel between the layers, but he can't get out, he's stuck in that middle block. That's not the biggest problem, the biggest problem is, there's another layer of aquifer underneath which I had no idea how to deal with.

Thanks NecroRebel, trying that now, and I'm using the Lazy Newb Pack; here's the link for it.

So, I have another problem, I channelled from the surface to the aquifer layer, and yes, it all turned to ice like it's supposed to. But the problem is, my dwarves have no way of getting down there, to dig through the ice. Here's a screenshot of the layer above the aquifer layer:

Now here's a screenshot of the aquifer layer:

Yes, the ice block in the middle I could dig through without releasing the water, but the problem is, my dwarves can't reach it. Any help? Also, how should I go about just digging that single ice block out?

No, I abandoned that fortress because it was screwed and made a new one, the new one was shown in the screenshots. I have 3 miners and 3 picks, none of them are frozen...

In fact, the amount of fortresses I have abandoned today just to get past 2 layers of aquifer is so high I think I set a record...

Now I have an even bigger problem. I'll try to upload screenshots.

That's me channelling from the top

Layer under surface

Layer under that

The dreaded first aquifer layer

Notice how my dwarves can easily get to the aquifer layer but they don't seem to dig out the ice for some reason...

Nevermind. The freezing method worked. Except for one problem.

My miners got encased in ice, and my backup miner doesn't seem to be up to rescuing them.

Gah, I can't save my miners. What do I do?

I found that quite confusing...

"For the following, pause the game after every square dug out and make sure the miners dig both layers at the same rate and redesignate when they cancel your plans automatically. Dig a 5x5 hollow square of up/down stairways at the change in level, going down as far as you can. The lower aquifer should accept water from the upper aquifer, allowing you to drain the upper aquifer (at least partway). Then gradually take on the area in the middle, building walls and/or staircases to fill in and stop the flow as you expand. Eventually you should get command over the source of flow, and can dig a hole in the center of the bottom-most layer surrounded by a 3x3 ring of impermeable rock."

I just got confused to living heck trying that...

The other methods are either too confusing aswell or I don't have the resources to try that method.

I recently made a new embark, because the previous one got TOO boring. This one has 2 layers of aquifer, it's just that I have no idea on this earth how to get past it.

Yeah, that's pretty much all I have to say... I truly have NO idea whatsoever on getting past the aquifer. Can anyone help?

Oh, sorry for being extremely stupid, my farmer couldn't get to the seed barrel because there was a wall blocking the way.

Could a higher rank please close this thread, sorry for being so idiotic. :)

I don't have a kitchen, nor any dwarf with the cooking labour enabled. I everywhere for a Plump Helmet Spawn, no result.
