DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress 40_10 Starter Pack r2
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:38:41 am »
I'm sorry if this has been suggested before, but I think adding an option to set the strict population cap without the need to manually change the d_init.txt file would prove useful.

Thank you for your work PE :)

EDIT: Or maybe you could automatically adjust it to POPULATION_CAP + 20 if you don't want / can't easily add that option. This could prove useful even if you add the option though, such that if STRICT_POPULATION_CAP < POPULATION_CAP then STRICT_POPULATION_CAP = POPULATION_CAP + 20.

This is just a suggestion though.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: So hopelessly confused

First time I tried adventure mode I was totally lost. A couple of quick tips.

(r)emoving something from your inventory (or while you wear it) will put it in your hand. That's how you equip things.
you can hold an infinite number of items as of this version. To drop something, you have to hit 'd', but you can't drop something you're wearing, so you'll have to remove it first.
If you find boogeymen, run. Don't sleep alone at night outside, and if possible don't sleep outside even during the day, wild animals could come wandering, or you could be ambushed.
When you'll be geared/skilled enough, you can consider fighting bogeyman. It's easier with a slashing weapon or with a good wrestling skills.

With slashing weapons, just slash at their lower body, and if you're skileld anough (and actually hit them), you'll most probably split them in half.
If you have a good wrestling skill, bite them in the lower body until "you latch on firmly" and then shake them and you'll most probably rip them in half.
The way to do this last thing is: Aimed attack (uppercase A when you're near an enemy), press b for lower body, press whatever letter to bite.
Repeat until you get the message "you latch on firmly". If it takes too long, stop. Don't get surrounded.
After the message, perform another (A)imed attack, press Enter to wrestle, press 'a' to select the bogeyman, press Enter to select "Wrestle using your upper right tooth" (or whatever tooth that is), then press Enter to select "Shake ... bla bla".

Also, you can consider training to increase your skills and chance of survival, if you want.

Also also: Speed is important. And shields. Without a shield, you'll be dead meat sooner than later, with it (and good shield user skill) you're basically a tank.
You can also equip more than a shield, but most consider it cheating. It's a single player game though, you can do whatever you want.

Report back for any problem, question, idea or whatever. Just remember that you WILL incur some of the most gruesome deaths (both in adventurer and fortress mode) you could imagine, but that's part of the fun.

And finally a forum related advice. "fun" is the usual meaning of fun, while "Fun" is Fun

Yay wall of text x_x

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Weight

Seems like you lack some toughness. A higher toughness means that you don't pass out so easily.

Agility is the stat that has the biggest impact on speed. Armor user impacts the speed penalty of the armor you're wearing. The higher the armor user skill, the less the armor will slow you down.

Also, total weight affects speed. If you pick up dragon bones you could see your speed go from ~1700 to maybe 800 or 700 because they're very heavy.

You can check how much something weights by pressing i, then the letter relative to the item you want to check, and then look at the top left. You should see XΓ. X is the weight of said item.

Also, some skills will increase your speed. Namely thrower/archer and wrestler. I think dodger also. You will notice that if you pick up and throw a lot of rocks your speed will increase. If you want to do it, I suggest using some macros.

And as Angel of Death pointed out: if you're laying on the ground or stunned you'll be much slower. The same applies to sneaking, but the better you get at it, the faster you go. At legendary ambusher (the skill trained by sneaking) you'll retain 100% of your normal speed, even while sneaking. And monsters won't see you even if you stand RIGHT BESIDE them smashing their head.

I used the same DF download, so that might be the issue but I never had any other crash so it's quite odd. I did a little adventure in vanilla but I never got to a town so I don't know if it would crash there too.

Yep, dynasauri town (or whatever it's spelled). It's a new civ intruced by civilization forge.

Anyway, I must be pretty unlucky then, seeing how my last 3 adventures in 3 different mods had the same exact problem. I'll keep trying then... I discovered I could go quite a bit west before the game crashed (although it did hang for 3-4 seconds a couple of times) and if I can get to the part of the town without shops, It's done.

Damn, and I hoped it was a problem with my pc. It's strange though, it happened with civilization forge, monster hunter universe and genesis, but I don't see many topic about it, so I guess that either I am pretty unlucky or something's wrong...

Yes, I know this post does not belong here, but the adventure mode discussion forum isn't very lively, at least atm. So, my problem is that my adventurer is stuck in a town that is segfaulting wherever I go, hence I cannot "leave this site" (evil civ town) and continue my adventure. I would be grateful if someone could exit the town and save in the wilderness. Version is 31.25 and I'm using civilization forge mod, I don't think it matters tho because the save is the whole region, and it's located here.

Hope you'll help me ;)

Here is the save. The world is genned with civilization forge but it shouldn't be a problem if you haven't it installed, it's the whole region save. Df version is 31.25 as I said in the first post. If someone could just exit the town and save in the wilderness it would be fantastic. You can keep the adventurer if you want, he (or she? Can't remember lol) is pretty badass. Started as a human lasher but I somehow managed to lose my whip and my shield, so (s)he's now dual-wielding shields and bashing everyone's skull through their brain.

Is anyone else having a LOT of segfaults (seemingly randomly) when entering or walking through the shops section of towns? I said seemingly randomly because sometimes the game will segfault upon entering a yellow tile in the world map, sometimes not. And once I'm in, simply walking and going around will sometimes crash the game, upon nearing a shop. It seems that different zones have different chances of crashing the game, but I'm not totally sure. The version is 31.25, linux. I'm using civilization forge but I had the same problem with monster hunter universe and genesis. I didn't try vanilla. It could be that my pc is too crappy, but it's most probably a bug, since in hamlets or in non-commercial zones of towns I don't have this problem.

EDIT: It seems that whatever I do, wherever I go, I'll be segfaulting before I can "leave this site". I'm uploading the save and will post a link to it ASAP. I would be really, really grateful if someone could leave that town and save in the wilderness, so I can keep on playing. Will reply when the file is up.

EDIT2: The save is here

Yes, obviously you were right... I though I embarked with every new millable (to dye) plant seed (I'm into textile industry) but I was wrong. Tested on another embark and, yep, my bad. Sorry :-X
