Make sure you don't get gypsum plaster for your hospital, it bugs out, use splints instead.

Really? Splints can substitute for casts made with plaster?

Those would be great news, since there's only two supplies that I still fail to give to my hospital:

- Liquid water during the winter (working on this right now)
- And casts - can not find any of the stones you can make plaster powder with.

Read at your own risk, mcSwordFinder.

(...)

And quite an awesome embark this is.

I'll resist the urge to read it :P

I've had some setbacks, but I guess that was to be expected :) I'll keep at it.

Your fortress has crumbled to its end

elapsed time: approximately 3.5 seconds.

So this is how the endgame is like, huh.

Do you get this message only after all your dwarves are dead, I assume?

Only one cave-in? In one terrible choice of an embark I had a good 40 cave-ins happen periodically for the first year until they settled down.

As far as I can tell, it was because an aquifer overlapped with a cavern that had holes in it, leading to the great magma sea. Did I mention this embark had a volcano in the middle of a freshwater-lake?

Well, I did not say that this was the most exciting embark ever, just MY most exciting one ;). Bear in mind I've only been playing for about a week  :P

On another note, it won't be easy getting to that sword. A simple goblin ambush just sent half my "army" to the hospital. Then winter arrived and all my water supplies froze over when I most needed them. 3 dwarves dies of dehydration, 1 of infection, heh. Not a single dwarf came out of that hospital alive, lol.

Still trying to figure out water reservoirs.

And my underground tile is now getting light and tagged as "above ground" since i built the well above it  :P

Well, it does make sense.

5 patients died of thirst and now spring has come. How fun :P

Well, flooring the ice surface didn't work or perhaps I did it wrong - but it's still considered above-ground and to be receiving light.

My idea is de-constructing that wall (quickly because it thaws!) and building a new wall that would also stop the water, but that would now allow 1 underground tile to be filled up.

Then I would just build the well about that 1 tile.

On a side note - with this idea, that one tile below the well would be underground, but still connected to the above ground pool...wouldn't this cause the water below the well to freeze when the pool does, even if the tile is underground?

Now, about your way:

I would effectively have an underground (so no freezing) murky pool, with a well above to make the water good for drinking. The only problem with this would I guess be no refills from rain. the pool has 5x4x7...so I'm guessing it'll be enough.

It will work, though I'm not sure how fast the dwarfs drink water.  It's possible that they'll drink a single tile of water dry before the thaw.

I think you could also construct flooring over the surface of a murky pool to force a thaw.  That way you'd have more water available.

Oh...exactly...

Bringing underground to the water instead of bringing the water underground  :D

Thanks!

I think I have an idea that might work. At the start of my fort I used an outside, above ground, murky pool to irrigate my farm, by channeling the water to the underground area where the farm was going to be built.

After the place was irrigated, I built a wall on the tile that I channeled, so that water wouldn't come pouring in when it started to rain outside. My idea is de-constructing that wall (quickly because it thaws!) and building a new wall that would also stop the water, but that would now allow 1 underground tile to be filled up.

Then I would just build the well about that 1 tile.

Will this work?

DF Gameplay Questions / Question about water reservoirs.

Hey guys.

Ok, so goblins attacked just before winter, and now all of my water sources (murky pools) are frozen, and I have to water to clean my patients' wounds.

This lead me to think about making a water reservoir so that I have liquid water in the winter. I have some questions about this.

- I won't be needing the water for drinking, just for cleaning wounds, so water from a murky pool inside my reservoir will work, right?

- I've never used floodgates before. How would a dwarf take water from the reservoir? Certainly not by opening the floodgate??

- Since this won't be drinking water, do I still need to create floors in the reservoir?

- What is needed to actually keep the reservoir from freezing? Will just closing it with walls and having it underground do the trick?

Edit: Scratch those. I forgot my patients also drink water.  :P

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Soap Making
« on: December 01, 2010, 01:56:49 pm »
Soup is made at a kitchen, not at a soaper workshop ;)

Alright, serious now:

For me, the option to make soap only appears AFTER I have the materials for the soap: tallow, and a barrel with lye in it.

As lye is manufactured in buckets, you need empty barrels and a lye stockpile close to your soaper. That will tell your dwarves to put the lye in a barrel, in the pile.

Steel Weapons and (some) steel armor are ready for my 10 man squad (fort population = 50).

My next project is setting up a working Hospital.

This is where I failed in my last embark. I did not have it set up when an Ettin attacked, and was literally searching the wiki about soap and plaster making while my guys were lying there all broken and cut up.

A hospital needs so many different things and processes in order to work, it's gonna be interesting.

Are there more "scenarios" like this?

Not quite, but a few forts ago, I got a "Forgotten Beast XXX has been struck down!!!" message.  I had 9 dwarves, and no FB had appeared.  Zoomed to position of the corpse, and it was about 110 levels down.  Apparently, from the engravings carved of this unseen event, two salt men (?) had pushed the FB off a ledge....

I didn't even get to dig halfway down before four goblin ambushes arrived just BEFORE I put the last stone in my impenetrable fortress walls...

I hope I can make it to the sword before my fortress, too, succumbs.

But right now I need to send my squads to kill some animals for training :D

And I started playing this game last week! :):)
You're about to find out just how FUN DF can be...
