the best artifacts in my fort of 20 years has to be a three way split between adamantine chainmail pants (my dorfs seem to have a pants fetish), a large serrated adamantine disc (SO using that in adventure mode), and an adamantine anvil (3,994,800 dorfbucks).

lamest? probably an iron shoe

yes. ONE shoe.

the only reason the dorf who made it hasn't been sacrificed to Armok yet is that he got legendary status out of it.

That's pretty neat.  It would also catch fliers if you filled in the entire z+1 level with constructed floors, so they had to come in on the ice level.  That would also support the walls (or natural floor, which also prevents freezing) so z+2 isn't required.

As for the survival of creatures on the grates, well, you can link the grates to the drain lever as well as the hatches.  Then when you drain the water down 20 z-levels to the caverns... you can guess the result  8)

I just recently froze approximately 36 goblins in that hallway.

It.
Was.
Glorious.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Forgotten Beast using equipment?!

"The Forgotten Beast Asno Oguramxu has come! A huge humanoid composed of vomit. It has three long, curving horns and it undulates rhythmically. Beware its deadly dust!"

So, this guy appears in my third cavern layer. Not a big deal, I have a decent military, I know how to deal with deadly dust.

He moves off of the map for a while, and I get the notification that the named Olm Woman who killed an earlier Forgotten Beast has bled to death. I check the vomit beast when I see him again. He's a little banged up, and he's carrying a black-cap shield?

I check the black-cap shield, and it's got five kills on it, including the notable kill of the named Olm Woman.

Has anyone else seen a Forgotten Beast (Or Titan Maybe?) picking up and using equipment? It seems like not only has he picked up the shield (stolen from the olm people no doubt), but he used it as a weapon, won the battle, and is still carrying it. I suppose it makes sense at least, he is humanoid, but I've still never seen it happen.

Either way, it's terrifying to see them equipping themselves.

seen a sock used. scary stuff...

My first ever fort! I've done slight work with the old mayday tutorial but I'm playing the new mayday pack for 31.18, so I'm hoping that I can manage iragation, I'm wonder how I would get buckets, I did not bring one on my journey and a water source is kind of far away.

None the less I have high hopes for the fort of Drillmourn, may my dwarves live long enough to see a noble get here!

underground tunnels with fortifications leading to a pool the dorfs can drink from has always worked for me.

Spoiler: Oh what luck I have (click to show/hide)

Mammoths.
Why are all your dwarves masons?
Their peasants, this is Genesis mod and the get ready button has all points used up. I was going to do a Santa challenge but now it's Santa challenge with peasants. Also, mammoths walked away. Maybe they were scared of my two Steel Dwarfs. (2 Steel, 2 Jade, 3 Stone) Was hoping for an obsidian if it came to fighting.

I suggest making up some cages in between the toymaking to get some mammoths for the slay eh, sleigh.

'cause you can't have slaughter without laughter.

After mining out a large room for an underground tree farm, I built a bridge and attached it to a lever to atom smash the mined rock out of existence. after dumping it all under the raised bridge, I told a dorf to pull the lever.

Happily, one of my three traders obliged and rushed over to pull the lever. After doing so, he wandered off to get a drink (I suppose he was, at any rate), and walked right under the bridge to get to the...

SPLAT

*facepalm*

on the up side, he wasn't the best trader I have. more booze for everyone else!
