This video made me rage, too.
Sure, I'm disappointed that it looks to be so very, very similar to Dwarf Fortress. That bothers me as much because my favorite pen and paper game company, Palladium Books, basically got squeezed out of the option of making a game based on their RIFTS franchise by the MMORPG RIFT, which snuck in and snagged the title - to say nothing of the vast similarities between content. (Summary in spoiler at bottom)
What really made me rage, though, was that voice over. Seriously. It just... I mean... I... RHHAAAAAAGGGGGG! *flips desk*
Some time after RIFT was announced, Palladium Books attempted to file a copyright infringement suit based on the name. Unfortunately for them, their lawyer filed in the wrong jurisdiction; because RIFT had not been released yet, the court deemed that filing in their own back yard meant they were filing where there was no competition. This alerted the makers of RIFT that there may be contention to the name, and so they filed a countersuit before Palladium could regroup, challenging the validity of their company in the modern game market. While they ultimately settled out of court and the details of the settlement could not be disclosed, the fact that RIFT wasn't forced to change its name strongly suggests that whatever was decided was not in favor of Palladium Books.
