Other Games / Re: slow paced roguelike / rpg
« on: November 14, 2014, 01:08:11 pm »
Unreal World comes into my mind
Does it have a small enough amount of elements? I always thought of it as complex, for a roguelike.

You're right....that does not fit in this respect.

With slow-paced I do not mean that it should not be complex but more for instance that you do not kill 100 monsters / turn. So more focus on stealth, more intelligent enemys and that.
So, in principal, I like games like Nethack apart from this.
My favorite PC game is currently Xenonauts...

Shadowrun Returns looks also cool, thx for that.

So, lately I've fallen in love with boardgames, which you can also play solitiare (for instance Arkham Horror: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15987/arkham-horror)

The main reason is, I like the slow-paced gaming....you actually see what's going on (game mechanic) and the number of game elements has to be obviously limited.

Can anybody recommend me a slow paced (turn-based) roguelike or rpg in general ? Unreal World comes into my mind, but it's just not my theme....surely it is a great game

@Retropunch: Yes, I know it :) but as you say it has another focus and it is not realistic in terms of submarine operations/combat.

@Levi: It does not model history :) So the assumption is the cold war got hot....cold war setting means the timeline (80's). So my inspiration is the Sid Meier game "Red Storm Rising".

Some new Screenshots: http://img4web.com/g/JAK2. Progress is slow but hope is that I can turn most of my coding efforts into the game itself soon.
No question that the UI needs to be polished when the game itself is more mature...

no, it is not out....I think the plan is to release it end of the year or so.

Yes, usually I play (soilitaire) boardgames to get away from electronic stuff...and in the meantime there are some cool paper-AI boardgames available, which often beat computer games AI or at least they give that impression. For the mass market these AI systems maybe to difficult to get into....

FFG is currently developing a boardgame with the licensed XCOM Theme. It is solo-playable and is actually an hybrid game, since the AI and that stuff is implemented via a Web app or a tablet/smartphone app if you have such a device. Looks pretty cool and innovative to me....!

Other Games / Re: Any commercial ASCII game out there?
« on: August 04, 2014, 01:05:40 pm »

The original "Rogue" was apparently sold, but that's more there was a version which used ASCII rather than the game solely being in ASCII.

I don't remember playing any growing up in the early 90s.

I was a little ambiguous here: With ASCII I do not mean necessarily ASCII art/graphics but for instance had ASCII-based roguelike like Nethack in my mind. But interesting to know that Rogue was actually sold and was not necessarily free...

Just to satisfy my curiosity:

Is there any commercial (not for free) pure ASCII game out there? I've searched but did not found one.

Also looking forward playing this...how is the AI compared to the old one?

Yes, I was also disappointed from Harrison Ford - although I like him usual. The performance of Asa Butterfield I think was not so bad and somewhat believable.

Yup, I'll read the book.

So, I've seen the movie yesterday. On the one hand I did not like the movie that much (too much simulated battle scenes for my taste) but on the other hand I did like the story itself. Has somebody read the novel...I have read in some critics that the actor in the novel is only 6 years old, so it is more a book for children (?).

Anyways, I'd love to read a new scifi novel...maybe there are also other novels with a similar theme out there?

... has the OP considered the actual Alien books? There's a fair amount of them.

No, not ;)...I'll check them out

The title says it all....can anybody recommend a scifi novel with an 'Alien' or 'System Shock' theme?

Thanks.

Will there be playable Soviet Navy submarines (assuming that you'll command an American submarine by default)?

would be a possibility, yes...the strategic part would be a problem, since you cannot implement this so generic like different submarines...
