DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Strangler
« on: December 22, 2007, 10:41:00 pm »
Success for me has come by way of strangling my enemies.  I've read various threads about how to increase one's stats quickly by wrestling zombies, but I've found it quicker to simply strangle prone or unconcious foes.  I strike at them with my weapon until they're down and then go right for the throat.  It usually takes several rounds to kill, but each round of strangling provides 10 points to wrestling.  It doesn't really take much to attain mastery, this way.  This has been how I've finished all of my quests, too.  Ettins, giants, cyclops. . .  Take 'em down and squeeze their throats.

I've had two characters go pretty far, this way.  I screwed up with the first one, though, by accidentally stealing an item then accidentally murdering a child by running in to him.  :( Silly me. . .  I should have went to stealth right after killing him. . .

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves won't dig any further down?
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:36:00 pm »
My latest fortress happens to also be my most successful one.  I've lasted longer in the old 2d version, but I can't say I accomplished as much as I have in this fortress.  Unfortunately the game crashed and I lost the last couple seasons of my 3 year old fortress.

Anyway, I've been trying to dig deeper, but my dwarves refuse to.  I'm not really deep, yet.  I'm in the fourth level of the igneous intrusive layer and the next layer seems to have more olivine (which indicates more gabro, an igneous intrusive layer rock).  Of course, I have one level that has a combination of sedimentary and igneous intrusive rocks, so that next level might be a transition zone.

Is it a coincidence that my dwarves refuse to dig into the next geological layer or is there some other reason?  I know it's not that there's other work.  They've completed all other dig jobs and sit around idling until I designate something above that level.  If it helps, the deepest level in which my dwarves have actually inhabited (sorta. . . it's my tombs) is six levels above the problem level.

EDIT: Here's my region:

DF General Discussion / CMV file format questions. . .
« on: November 25, 2007, 12:33:00 pm »
I started looking at the CMV file format and have noted a few things:

  • Each frame of animation is stored in 4000 byte blocks
  • Frames are stored in ZLIB compressed blocks of up to 200 frames
  • The first compressed block starts at 12824 in the file, unless there is sound
  • If there is sound, the block starts 200 bytes later
  • That 200 byte block seems to store sound filenames padded by bytes of ASCII code 0xCC.
  • The rest up until the four bytes before the first block is exactly 12.5 KB of ASCII code 0xFF

My questions:

  • Other than the file header, is there anything important in the first 20 bytes of the file?  I've noticed that it changes only when there's sound in the movie.
  • Is the padding between each sound filename just junk?  Are the filenames simply evenly spaced within that 200 byte block?
  • What is the purpose of that 12.5 KB block of 0xFFs?
