alas, the fortress is gone.
all was well in the underground fort until a siege... and the armies were mighty, but the armor and weapons were not.
.... lost about 100 due to fighting and a few bastards getting through to the civilians, in the end it looked like somebody took a large amount of creatures, put them in the blender and shot them at my base with a shotgun.

started anew and wow.. hematite is literally all over the place.
the earth, IT SHALL BE STRICKEN!!

LLLAAAMMMEEE
goblin siege comes, I manage to defeat it, but as the goblins are running away I notice that theres a lot of blue on the ground and its not trolls blood...
turns out they broke the door to my water works...
long story short, siege was defeated but all 201 dwarves drowned, or at least thats what would have happened.. game crashed with all the water moving about.

gonna take it up again from an old save... bah, damn you goblins!! >:(

Well...

...why aren't you at magma yet? Dig deeper.

Anyway, if there was meant to be iron, it'd generally be at the first few levels from the surface. Magnetite clusters and limonite veins are there. Your only hope is hematite, but it's pretty rare to find it down there...

Just request and buy all steel crafts and such junk from everyone you can. Like any proper fortress, you should be outputting so many stone crafts you can practically give them away.

trying to get to magma right now, relocated my base from the surface (zlevel 144) to zlevel 100.
its hard though, got about 5 mega beasts, all of which are poison spewing dirt bags...

Well if the goblins don't have it either then you're not outclassed, indeed if you can find some tin then you have bronze :D Megabeasts might be nasty though...

Can you not get steel from the caravans either? I've heard that's still possible even if your civ has no iron.
yea, I can get steel, but it seems to be really limited... curious as to why I cant get iron at all though. I'm pretty far in, got about 150 dwarves and my little kingdom is located at zlevel 100. discovered the second level underground area.

so yea, straight to the point here, my map is devoid of iron for some reason. I'm not talking about where I cant find iron by mining, but I'm totally unable to see it in the smelting menu, or buy it from the caravans. heck, havent even encountered it on the goblins or humans, and I cant even buy the stones from the merchants.
sitting at copper right now, and what steel I can scavenge from the caravans/ambushes.. :'(

I would personally like it where you could at least trade with others and perhaps siege others as well.

A bronze colossus attacked my fortress a while ago, and while everyone was evacuating, a woodcutter didnt make it and the bronze colossus was busy making him into puddy. one of my medical dwarves whom I named Cameron ran out and tried to recover the woodcutter (who died as she was running out) and the bronze colossus got to her, but instead of killing her he started dragging her away, like he was going to leave the map with her.
I sent my military after him, and my captain reached the colossus first, and he fought it for a while, then was injured and was about to be killed when cameron out of nowhere (still being dragged by the colossus) knocked the colossus unconscious, giving my captain time to recover and kill it.

....
later on, cameron was trying to recover some recruits from a siege when a bowman shot at my captain. he jumped out of the way and bolt flew and headshotted cameron...

It could be operating system. Toady recently switched over to a new compiler.

It could also be the RAM. Dwarf Fortress takes up quite a bit.

The RAM is probably the issue, can't run many things with less than a gigabyte nowadays.

truth, DF takes 512mb of ram all by itself for me. get some more ram, 2gb would be enough for ya.

>champion crossbow dwarf is blown apart
.... so he dodged an attack so hard that he hit the wall and blew up?

a voracious cave crawler did in about 15 civilians before my military caught up with him, now assigning a new military group to patrol the tunnels.
