DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I loaded up my fort and received a migrant wave within a minute of unpausing the game. I opened the drawbridge to let them in, and then shat bricks when I realised I'd forgotten about the Titan who was now wandering around my dining room like he owned the place. Luckily, it turned out to be a giant tortoise made of water (Blastoise?) and someone kicked it in half without taking any injuries. I really must stop dawdling and get some proper defences up.

I'm experimenting with an almost all-military fort called Clobbertime. Getting all the weapons and armour together is tough. I really wish there was a more advanced mining feature for veins of ore. Maybe if a dwarf digs some ore, it automatically marks the same ore to be dug if it's within 1 tile? It should be an option in the orders menu for when you just want them to dig rooms and leave the rest of the vein alone.

Bugger it. When I opened the east gate so the caravan could leave, an ambush snuck inside. Who did they happen to kill first? Only the Pharaoh himself! No heirs, and the pyramid is nowhere near finished yet. Well that puts an end to this experiment.
Shouldn't the Pharoh been burrowed inside a solid-gold room having masterful-roasts and legendary booze dropped off by his many, many servants?

You would think so. Actually I ran out of booze and they were going up to the well I had to build next to the river. I normally play with a low population cap, so I'm out of practice when it comes to supplying dozens of slaves dwarves.

Yep. They're a great feature.

Gah! My master plan for dealing with the aquifers has failed! For whatever reason I can't get this next layer to freeze. I'll have to fiddle with the channeling until I find a way... The water is also filled with "water" items. What the hell?

At a certain depth it stops freezing. Sucks for your fort, but in glacier maps it's a useful way to get drinking water by dropping an ice floor down a hole. The water items are melted ice "rocks". Unfortunately they don't count as proper water so they can't be used to drink from.

Don't forget to have them build the necessary coffins first though.

Make them crew two rows of ballistas that face each other and see which team wins.

I named a dwarf after myself and changed his profession to Pharaoh, embarked in a desert, and began forming large teams of miners and masons to build a huge pyramid which will be my tomb. The masons will be buried alive with me when I die, along with enormous quantities of beer (but in a sealed room so the others don't drink it).

I was going to pick a desert-themed name for the fortress, but I was randomly assigned Mirrorwars and liked it. The Egyptian theme continues with a plague of rats. When I checked the topside workshops  there were over a dozen rats crawling over them, along with the remains of nearly three times that number. The cats are proving most useful in keeping them at bay. If my masons build any cat statues they will be positioned overlooking my coffin.

Speaking of statues, they've made quite a few of me. Most involve me holding up or admiring war hammers, but someone made one where I'm cowering in fear of blood gnats. If I didn't need them alive for the construction and burial I'd have them executed!

The Pharaoh has taken a liking to our woodworker. Perhaps if there are any heirs I'll build another pyramid after my own (smaller, obviously).

Mistmined has fallen. A couple of well-timed ambushes saw my marksdwarves wiped out in no time at all. A tantrum then led to the destruction of the drawbridge lever, jamming the thing open. The goblins  slaughtered half a dozen dwarves before they were driven off by the family of grizzly bears I'd been keeping near the main stairs. A tantrum spiral then began, leading to my best miner flying into a beserk rage. The survivors of that then went insane one-by-one, until only a child remained. The child's mental health recovered, but I decided to abandon the fort anyway.

And then the game crashed. When I reloaded the game it was before the attack. I didn't feel like replaying it, so I abandoned it again. I thought I'd try to find the fort in adventure mode, and spawned in a place called Pantsflashes. :/

I started a new fort with the random name of Mistmined. I took no items or skilled dwarves on embark, but we've managed to move most of the workshops and stockpiles underground now.

We haven't seen much hostile wildlife, but there was one werewolf attack. I didn't have any bolts so my marksdwarves wrestled it and beat it to death with their wooden crossbows. It did manage to cripple my expedition leader before it died, but she's dragging herself around now so it's not too bad.

My bowyer and her baby drowned because I forgot a small section of wall next to the pump. The water shoved her off into the pool and she couldn't get out.

Our pet turkey hen froze solid in her nest box. When I channeled down the hillside near the front door there was a 1x1 pond. I guess I built the nest box right on top of the pool tile and it was still collecting water.

Not much else happened. The marksdwarves slaughtered two waves of badgers for practice, and then some mountain gnomes that came down to steal some booze. Oh, and we bought a mating pair of grizzly bears from the elven caravan.

Nothing epic yet, but fingers crossed.

I'm not sure which plants are which, but I know some of them need to be in a certain environment. If your fortress covers multiple biomes, check to see which one your farm is in. I know I've had one of my farms rendered useless because I built it in the wrong place.

Another thing, it might be worth checking to see if the seeds are forbidden inside the bag. I've just had a facepalm moment in my kitchen because I mass-forbade the stockpile items to force them to mix some alcohol with some quarry bush leaves. Mass-forbidding will forbid the bags and the contents seperately. Later I tried using look [k] and claim [f] to unforbid them, but it only worked on the bag. It wasn't until I got frustrated and double checked that I realised the leaves inside were still {}'d.

I've just found out that one of my miners has a thing for turkey demons. I'd better keep an eye on him.

Ok, I am new here, and if this is the wrong place, please be nice.

So I wish to know about some good Dwarf fortress Lps that are still being made, and a Youtuber that does Dwarf fortress videos all the time.

Sorry if I sound demanding.......

Well I know of a guy who's just started a series where he's attempting to roleplay it a bit. In fact, I'm one of the characters: a washed up stand-up comic who practices medicine without a license. Oh, and former sufferer of dwarven-rabies. Cured now, of course. *cough*

His episode zero explains his intentions and requests character ideas for the starting seven dwarves. That one may be a bit obsolete I guess. Episode one is the embarking and creation of the characters. The play begins with episode two, and oh... episode three has just appeared! I guess I'll have to watch that in a minute. ;P

He's also completed a previous attempt, but that was just a regular LP without any roleplaying. It was still entertaining tho'.

The second team arrived at Wintersucks to find a hideous scene of carnage. I was roleplaying it, so I only gave them a handful of supplies (they expected the first team to have set up a base). We had ice wolf issues and some restless ghosts to take care of.

I managed to dig out a small space to store our supplies and then set the dwarves digging down to find cave water. And down. And down. I was beginning to panic. They were dehydrated and still digging (unskilled), but hadn't breached a cavern yet.

A few migrants arrived minutes before team 2 started keeling over and dying. The sad part is, if they had managed to mine another half-dozen squares they would have hit the edge of a cave with a lovely lake nearby.

I've never seen a lake this low before (not that I go digging for them much). It's almost on the level where my previous forts have had a magma sea.
