DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 26, 2011, 01:52:45 pm »
Due to a plague of children I'm getting bored with my current fort. I've already smelted a lot of silver for my UFO, so I'm not ready to abandon it just yet. So, I'm taking a break and doing something a bit more fun instead.

In the year 6 The Balls of Freezing of The Unswerving Irons founded Akatheb ("Wintersucks") on a terrifying glacier. Here's the cast of characters and our equipment:

Spoiler: Dwarves (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Stuff (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Notes (click to show/hide)

Edit: Hahaha, that didn't last long.

A blizzard man wandered over almost immediately and was set upon by the 8 war dogs. I realised Clark had brought a crossbow, quiver, and bolts, so he was made military commander and set to attack. He ignored the equipment and ran over to start punching it instead.

MacReady was then enlisted into another squad and sent into battle. Even with his pick he couldn't do anything. The blizzard man had 13 pages of scars to the head.

The others wouldn't go anywhere near the wagon and couldn't get any food or water. We were a week into Felsite when MacReady and Clark died and made everyone else miserable. They all keeled over and died shortly afterwards.

The blizzard man lost a hand, a tooth, and lost the sight in one eye, but other than that was covered in bruises. Mental note: In future, send someone to fight them before they get near the wagon.

On the plus side, while I thought I had no shallow metals, our ramp down uncovered some native platinum on two levels. I'm thinking of sending a second team to find out what happened to the others.

Fill every single room and inch of corridor with booze barrels, and then let some magma seep in.

6 children to 1 adult now. Every adult is working and I'm falling behind in booze production. 1 year to go before I start getting some new peasants to work with.

I finally found the cavern with water in it. My staircase hit the top of the cavern, and the water is 50 levels below that.

There are now 5 children for every adult in my fort, but I'm not sure how they found the time for that sort of thing. This is the first time I've constantly had a single idler or less. I need a sacrificial dwarf to carve a fortification into the magma pipe and activate my new furnaces, but every adult is currently essential to fort operations. The fort is 10 years old now however, so perhaps one of the surplus kids will grow up soon.

In other news, I'm being haunted by the ghosts of macedwarves who died protecting the caravan from an ettin, but I can't seem to find their names to engrave. Well, they seem peaceful for now, so maybe I'll keep them around.

When I set the population cap to 7, I forgot to adjust the birth rate. There are two kids per adult now and they're getting in the way of everything. Worse, they've pushed the population up to the point where we've elected a mayor. Fortunately this occurred while working on my new magma-powered glass furnaces, so I've built a sterilization system into his new bedroom.

We lost two thirds of the chicks in the chicken battle royale. The rest of them managed to grow up, although most were sporting injuries. In the end I just decided to abandon the chicken farm and had them all put out of their misery.

A child stole my gold bar from the trade depot for a mood, but luckily he couldn't get what else he needed and went insane. I built him a wooden casket for his insolence, and suspended it over the volcano. After his burial I had the support removed and sent him down into the pit. The only down side is that the mason who removed the support got pulled in with it.

I've never seen that before, but I did have cave spider webs appearing in a relatively young fort. That was something to do with an unusually high cavern which I somehow hadn't managed to breach. I'm not sure how it works for plants though.

Maybe a buzzard flew off with the bag of seeds. :P

The lavaduct is finished and the injured dwarf managed to survive, although her nose and leg are still broken. I've just built my first pump stack because the top of the volcano was a few levels lower than my plateau. I thought I followed the stack design accurately, but the pumps refused to power each other. Odd, but since I only needed four dwarves to operate it I let them do it manually. In any case, the moat has been filled successfully.

In other news, I was so busy with the lavaduct and pump stack that I forgot I disabled eggs from my food stockpile. We've had so many hatchlings that the chicks now outnumber dwarves 4 to 1. They're all running around the dining room, where they're beginning to attack each other and passing dwarves. We've lost a few, but there are still plenty more.

I've been building a lavaduct to transport lava from our volcano to the plateau where I built my fort. A good mason just fell from a bridge while trying to place a corner piece of wall too early. He broke his right leg and his lungs and guts have stopped working. I don't have a hospital yet so I'm not sure if he'll make it.

I usually just use a series of bridges seperating the outside, trade depot, barracks, and main fortress.

Sometimes I'll add a corridor of weapon traps with bridges at both ends. That way I can close the inner bridge and force any survivors to run back the other way, or seal the front and let dwarves in to gather the loot.

Most of the time I can't be bothered with traps as it takes so long to gather the stuff and it's mostly junk. Takes a while to get the traps set up too.

I'm playing an above-ground xmas-themed fortress called Magicgrotto. I didn't take any items with me so I could take a bunch of reindeer. My hunter started with his hunting skill disabled - possibly because I brought no crossbow or ammo - yet the job list says he's out hunting and I can't turn it off. I wanted him to be my woodcutter for a while but he won't come back for the axe. He's just wandering around in the snow like a noob.

Edit: OK he's brought his own equipment, but I've disabled all his labours and he's still hunting without permission. Damn you Bėmbul!

First: I embarked w/o axes. 10 months dealing only with stones and no beds, thou my dorfs were happy with que furniture.

You can deconstruct the wagon and make training axes for cutting trees. ;)

Yeah, I get far less eye-strain using graphics. And personally I have no problem imagining the 'green blob' as a goblin. Not sure why anyone would to be honest.
