DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Alter Aging?
« on: November 20, 2012, 07:46:44 pm »
In casr Ubiq wasn't clear, that 12 nexr to CHILD is the number of years it takes a dwarf to reach maturity. The 1 next to the baby is when they reach adolecence I think.

Also, it also needs to be said that if you want the changes to be in effect in ykur already ongoing game, you will need to edit the copy of the raws in data> saves>(your save).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Whips: Please explain
« on: November 20, 2012, 06:47:43 pm »
Those other weapons work very well against beasties mostly because beasties often don't have much in way of armor. Whips in this game can be as effective as axes at dispatching enemies, and whereas axes might run into a roadblock in the form of armor, whips have no such obstacle.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: maces suck?
« on: November 20, 2012, 06:43:08 pm »
thnx, but the question was to compare maces to war hammers. I just want to guess what is better to use? It is a vital question because you can't just change your squad equipment if you think that one or other weapon is better. Macedwarf and hammerdwarf are separate skills and are not interchangeable.
Now I have a mix of hammer/mace dwarves in my fort, but once macers got only 4-7 skill levels in maces it's not too late to respec. them.

Maces have a contact area of 20 whereas wh have a contqct area of 10. They both do the same penetration, and on these two values alone, the wh is generally superior due to the penetration of the weapon not b3ing distributed over double the area.

In any case, I would suggest that blunt weapon users be the minority in your armed forces due to their very particular advantages. In almost all other cases, the speed at which edged and sometimes pointed weapons like pikes can dispatch opponents is often invaluable. This factor is often what allows times where the militia are out numbered to come out on top and not get swarmed.

I think maces only really kill something when it strikes them in the head and damages the brain enough, and the odd occurrence where the lungs are broken enough that the entity suffocates, so they do pale in comparison against edged weapons in most cases. Otherwise the game doesn't really model internal bleeding all that well, IE not at all, for someone to die of that sort of injury. Unlike weapons that would produce an open wound, maces and other blunt objects can't do any sort of major bleeding damage that would cause something to die of exsanguination(yes, this is a real word Mr.Spell check).

There are reasons why you might want to keep one or two mace/warhammerers around though, one time my squads had incapacitated an entire siege of giants but didn't have the equipment to give the killing blow against their steel clad heads. This joke ran on for a few days until I rounded up some hammerers and killed the unconscious colossi.

General Discussion / Re: RL Zombie Apocolypse
« on: November 17, 2012, 05:48:15 pm »
Is there a way the zombie virus can spread around enough without every single armed force on earth being totally incompetent?

Actually, even with competence an actual just like the movies Zombie Apoclypse would at least surpise or catch unaware initial attempts to stop it I would think. I mean almost everyone knows how movie zombies work and shit, but seeing it start to happen in real life is unreal enough to be dangerous on it's own. In fact the cultural awareness of movie zombies might even cause problems.

How is this patrol sent to investigate something in the dark in the middle of an urban center going to tell the difference between 20 bored college kids doing a zombie walk too drunk to respond or 20 actual zombies shambling towards them? It seems stupid and silly but do remember, at one point there was an accident where a Russian garrison mistook some radioactive powder for talcum powder since they appeared very similar and in similar containers. It sounds stupid but when something is routine it dulls the senses.

But afterwards, actually containing a zombie outbreak shouldn't be a huge undertaking after it's realized what they are and that it's ACTUALLY happening. Unless it's a Romero style the dead come back to life no matter what thing. Then everyone's screwed anyway.

I actually think it would be quite quick to be identified for what it is, and if not in a definition similar to our conception of zombism, there are diseases like that out there already. A highly contagious form of human rabies would work just fine. With the current ability to communicate things the moment they happen, I'm usually highly suspicious of how these sorts of things go on undetected for prolong amounts of time. New diseases often set off alarm bells of the highest order. It seems to me that the only way that this disease can spread unnoticed is as if there's several months delay between when the symptoms start and that assuming check up won't find anything funny about these people, and a failure of every single communications system we have, not to mention a failure of almost every other emergency system.

It's not even as if zombies provide much in terms of offensive value either. They're more or less very angry, small bears and twice as stupid. The level of firepower a modern military can bring forth is simply staggering. The advances in air-power, artillery, and other mechanical system is almost never depicted all that accurately in these types of movies.

I'm going to put my weight beh8nd the people who advocate using the silver for traps. They may not be good for cutting wweapons, but they make awesome  bludgeoning ones. A row of silver smashy traps ought to incapacitate almost everything that comes your way.

FPS death. Even if I feel like starting a new fortress in the middle of the game when the FPS wasn't as bad, experiencing the slow grind right before I abandon pretty much stops me from making a new fortress for a long while.

So basically I have a monarch at my fortress now, thing is. He's a vampire. I have no clue what to do.

Chuck him down a magma pipe and see if he sees anything interesting.

Dig out a stadium, put some goblins in there with her, and play some old-school Steven Seagal music.

Was that law a result from the Streicher conviction during Nuremberg? I think he began Der Sturmer or something? I remember readings something about him being hanged for more or less making thinly veiled encouragements for people to attack jews and such.

Most immigrant families tend to put a lot of pressure onto their kids. After that first generation though, things mellow out quite a bit. The kids that get good grades in mathematics and kids that don't get good grades in it in East asian countries are comparable to the rest of the world, although the rote memorization thing and the cultural pressure on doing well academically push it up a little bit more.

Honestly though, there are a lot of countries besides asian ones that ranks very well in terms of math scores.

By all means, it's not that children of immigrants from these countries are especially smart, but (I'm assuming most of you are from the US) the US is pretty awful when it comes to mathematics scores, or at best mediocre.

Life Advice / Re: My fight against caffeine.

Generally water is flavorless, and I crave flavor. So. Probably not.

I find that flavor matters less to me than getting into a state of mind. Whenever I drink water, I just think back to a moment in my youth where I was incredibly tempted to start drinking out of what looked to me to be an ideal stream of water in the forest that I never had the nerve to drink out of. I guess this is why people like to dress up food and give them fancy names, expectations can colour your experience of something a lot.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is the Minecart System Worth It?

Yup, though it seems I can only assign only a small limited number of them to a stockpile like 3 or something. I've resorted to making many stockpiles, but my dwarves seem insistent on filling one stockpile at a time meaning that the 3 wheelbarrows are used up when there are 10 more haulers doing it the hard way.
