Anything that will improve FPS under heavy load. I don't care about anything else.

Did you embark in an area where you had no goblin civilization near you, or are you just lucky enough to not get any sieges?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best random gen'ed Fort name
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:42:27 pm »
Not a fort name, but my group's name was The Chasms of Virgins.

I usually randomly generate names until I find something I like, and change it a bit until I think it fits with the area I'm embarking to, which means I don't have funny fort names.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where do you put catacomes?

I build large memorial halls for all my Dwarves, just because I like the way it looks (though Dwarves don't have their own rooms unless they're really important). I usually dig down a few more levels than where my main area is built, and I like to keep it close to my hospital.

Here is a picture of the design, because I don't have one built yet in this fortress:

At the end of each bit I put the coffin and, if time allows, make an engraved slab in the space in front of each one. I also put statues in the corners of the room and usually a statue or memorial in the middle.

It's a real bitch doing the slabs, because names already made can't  be removed from the build list, and because when building the slabs, they don't say who they belong to. Same goes for building statues (which I don't really do for gravesites). I wish it would list each individual statue, if they're different.

My dedicated tombs for important people are usually 15x15 in size, with states at each corner as well as one on the middle of each of the walls. I then build coffins and then engraved slabs in front of them (diagonal for the 4 corner ones).

Here is my layout (Warning: Mayday's tileset):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Basically a 4x4 room, ideally with a bunch of extra time spare for my craftsdwarves, each room would have a bed, table, chair, chest, and cabinet.

Key because I don't know the symbols in the vanilla game:
W=Wall
#=Floor
O=Bed
T=Table
C=Chair
D=Chest
B= Cabinet
&=Door

WWW&W
WBD##W
W####W
W####W
WTC#OW
WWWWW

Inverted or mirrored based on where I'm building.

Another alternative is that you could have use the [P] menu while in [q] to make it so only a specific Dwarf can use a workshop, though, that's unlikely to happen by accident.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Small Stockpiles, Pathing Errors
« on: January 04, 2011, 05:29:04 pm »
You use the [i ] menu to designate a [g]arbage zone. Then use [k] (or the [z] stocks menu) to designate items for [d]umping. Once they are dumped in that spot, press [d], [b ], and then [c] (the pile should turn green) then select the pile (should be regular colour). Now the items are free to use again.

For your second issue: Best way to fix this is to not designate side other than the side you want to start from for mining. Just select your minding area, but leave one space of wall at the end so they come at it from the proper direction. Once you are done with that, just designate the last bit.

yes names do change when they get notable kills but jobs wont.

They lose their nicknames and I'm fairly sure their job title changes back to default.

I don't think I've had any heart warming moments, but I've had a few awesome ones.

The Dabbling Lasher who used a dead goblin's Scourge to kill 6 trolls by himself comes to mind.

but moving every single dwarf into the burrow is a pain when you get 80 dwarfs, think about when you have 200!
altough resizing the burrow is a bore too, at leas you only do it once

You can assign all civilians to a burrow by making an alert in the military menu.

Only way is to build doors and forbid them, or block off the area entirely.

Do traction benches need to be next to the bed, or next to a surgery table in a hospital? No, but it seems to help as dwarves are not very good with handling bench <-> distance

I meant which one should it be next to, since doctors can't seem move Dwarves for surgery more than one space.

Bed|Table|Traction Bench OR Traction Bench|Bed|Table

Another: Does causing war in Fortress Mode cause the whole race, or just the faction to go to war with you? Do they go to war with all Dwarves, just your faction, or just your Fortress (could I make a new fortress with the same faction and not be at war)?

Why the hell would you want such a large embark?

Why would you want a smaller embark than that? I have to use 5x5 embarks because of the laptop I'm using at this time (good computer is out of commission right now), and it's way too small for me! I don't like digging down that much, so I build a lot of my stuff horizontally, and 5x5 is not enough room, since I also like to be near the surface world.

The only translator program I've seen on these forums is dead. Link in thread doesn't work, don't even know where the thread is now.
