This. Unless Bethesda thinks, "Hey, people really liked the fact that New Vegas actually had good writing, we should hire good writers because apparently that's important in a video game." instead of, "New Vegas was a success, it must be because of [something unimportant]" like I fear is the case.

This is what will happen. Bethesda have show an incredible propensity over the years to learn from their mistakes whilst failing to retain the essence of their past successes.

Do military dwarves always pick up the best stuff that they're allowed?

How do you retake a door

q to query buildings, select the door with the cursor, x to remove building. A dwarf will come and haul it away.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Carpenter's too lazy to work?
« on: January 16, 2011, 04:48:08 am »
It occurs to me that the carpenter could have other labours enabled. By default, dwarves have hauling, basic medical care and cleaning enabled. It's possible that the dwarf's personality is so disposed that he'd select cleaning, caring, or hauling over carpentry. It's also possible that he'd select a job which would be immediately cancelled due to lack of materials or some other thing being forbidden or inaccessible. For example, he might want to clean, but there isn't any available soap or water or buckets. Of course this would show up in announcements, but you might have some announcements disabled.

Why are you buying lye when half your military are proficient at making it?

Overall, hallways tend to be inefficient. Why bother with them?
Agreed, but I still find them usefull.

When you need to get somewhere and don't want to put anything useful in the intervening space, yeah

I'm sure you can tame Toads into war animals.
I mean, come on, whats worse, cute furry dogs in armor, or toads, with their unseeing eyes just staring into the horizon, their skin blotchy, and covered in blood and innards?

Covered in blood and innards? Sounds dwarfy to me

Why, broker, why must everything else be so much more important to you than going to the god-damned depot? And why does nobody else turn up when you decide it's time for a kip, or a smoke-o?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 15, 2011, 08:40:57 pm »
I keep getting attacked by goblins and my military is pathetic. There's no water on this map, so most injuries are a death sentence.

The upside is that this was a seriously messed up embark, and there are two enormous adamantine pillars sticking up out of the ground; and more besides. As such, adamantine is my most common ore (or at least the easiest to find) and so soon I will be cranking out a buttload of adamantine armour. I already have thirty adamantine spears... I chose spears because I figure about 50% of the attacks will be edged (don't know if that's how it works but..)

It took me a long time to set up my magma forges/smelters. For some reason, in lieu of water, my cavers were entirely filled with magma. But here's the thing; the magma sea is draining somewhere, and I couldn't dig a spot for my forges quick enough before the magma sea drained away. Eventually (and with much fretting) I dug out an awesome area to catch magma in and set up my forges. Unfortunately I lost quite a few of my best miners in the process. The replacements are doing a piss-poor job; fort expansion has slowed to a crawl whilst they train up in mining. But, I'm getting there!

My basic design is lazy, but I find effective. The basic room plan is an 11x11 square. Rooms are connected with three 1x1 passages in the middle. Nine workshops can fit in the space in a nice grid, with four 1x11 paths crossing eachother inbetween them, that link between two opposing passages. I prefer now to place four up/down stairways, each splayed diagonally across the room two diagonal spaces from the centre, which leaves room for a 3x3 workshop in middle. This way I can easily link to storage spaces above or below.

When rooms need to be rooms, I usually base the room structure off my workshop structure; a 3x wide hallway, with 3x 3, 6 or 9 rooms hanging off connected by a 1x1 doorway; some rooms deviate from this basic setup, usually left as a 11x11 room.

I'd recommend this setup to anyone; it's easy to make, being heavily reliant on shift+cursor, so it's easy to make uniform sized rooms without asymmetry cock-ups. It's versatile enough to deviate from without ruining the fort's aesthetic, either.

Overall, hallways tend to be inefficient. Why bother with them?

Scratch that... to my dismay the entire magma sea is slowly drying up. It's bloody wierd... I didn't see that one coming. (It's a big sea)

Do magma powered workshops and furnaces use up magma; possibly when not even being used? I had some magma drain dry for no apparent reason.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Waterrrrr!!

You think that's bad, I've got no water at all. Just an underground magma sea. No rain, no river, no acquifer, just lava, rock, and dry mud. Also, no trees or plants.
