DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:35:04 am »
Forgotten beasts with deadly dust are just unfair. 8 of 10 legendary soldiers died from complete paralyzing. After the beast of course. Pretty much every non caged animal died too and some random dwarves died (children too) from the plague spreading to them. Due to no skilled butchers only the beasts head is being butchered and the big parts have already started rotting  >:(. One dwarf managed to get to the hospital partially paralyzed and was diagnosed with beast disease. No treatment was scheduled and he left the bed and seems to be ok now.

My axedwarfs didn't chose it over even no quality steel axes, but thanks for the analysis (knowing which value means what is gonna be helpful for further artifact weapons) i might try it in a trap if something other than kobold thieves ever visits my fort. As i have masterwork bluemetal weapons now i won't need it on my dwarfs. I'll prolly just leave it in a bin for my next adventurer to play around with.

UristMcCook cancels sleep taken by mood. I check his skills: Novice Bonecarver... He claims a craftdwarfsshop. Well i wouldn't mind losing that dwarf but then again he would have been my first casualty, so i check what he wants. Shells... Well there is no water baring the caves and the caves have no fish. Then i remember there's a forgotten beast in the third cavern which is some snake with a shell.
My militia has been training for almost 3 years and killing camels so they're skilled already with the best guy level 9 in fighter so i figure just go for it.
Actually there were two fbs in the cavern but the military dispatched of them rather easily with their shiny candy masterwork weapons, not without the captain having her right arm bitten of but since she's a badass she just carries shield and silver hammer in the left hand now :D.
So the butchers work on the assorted beast parts and finally get to the mutilated snake corpse. Upon completion i inspect the workshop to find a nice stack of 118 beast shell.
I'm like, yeah enough for any crazy moods this fort my come across for years.
UristMcCook takes the whole stack and lots of other assorted gems cloth wood and stone to make a figurine of my civs first king (of course bugged like all bonecraft artifacts without decorations).

DF Gameplay Questions / Aluminum weaponry
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:17:16 pm »
My smith just made an aluminum battle axe. I tried comparing the material properties on the wiki, but aside from aluminum having the same max_edge as iron and steel i don't understand the rest of the values.
Anyone have an idea if aluminum is a good material for edged weapons?

Are you sure you made a raising bridge? Maybe you made a retracting bridge by accident.

I found the way out by selecting the cavern from the (Q) sites menu. That made the compass show me the way to the cavern.
Managed to kill the hydra i was quested with, only to die to a night creature ambushing me the sleep.
It had 2 kills before stabbing me in the head with its copper bone carving knife... How copper can pierce a bluemetal hood is beyond me.

Which leads to another question: There aren't enough human settlements in my current world. I would get tasked to kill dragons and hydras so far away that i would have to travel through kobold and goblin land across half the map, losing all companions to ambushes at some point.
How do you travel long distances without losing all companions?

So i went to explore a cave and ended up in the caverns. Now i can't find the way back out. I remembered reading that sleeping underground would teleport one back up. I slept 8 hours and my companions are now gone. I'm still underground. Help!

I don't think that it will be useful, except maybe for an adventurer slapping enemies with the flat side.  :D

Make sure you put the stuff for your adventurer in metal bins (preferably lead, but copper bins didn't seem to move either on my last fort). Wooden bins are scattered all over the map on abandoning that will make it nigh impossible to find the items in adventurer mode.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cook ingredient selection problems

Eh? I somehow either had 100 units of syrup in a barrel or the cook managed to use 4 stacks of 25 syrup, when he made syrup roast with forgotten beast meat in my last fort. Result was a stack for 300something dwarven syrup roasts. It was worth over 100k dwarfbucks.

Surefire solution: Put him out of his misery.
Or dig out a 2 z-level drop below him which will usually break half of his appendages if you're lucky also the one that isn't healing properly. Another treatment nets some xp for your doctors and sometimes makes the dwarf recover. If the dwarf is not so lucky he might sustain a spinal injury which never heals, but will make him suffocate if above the upper body.
This game really needs working crutches and wheelchairs.

I collected some coins in an abandoned fort with an adventurer but couldn't pay with them at the shop.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: help with tapping a magma pipe
« on: January 01, 2011, 03:43:05 pm »
Read the pressure page on the wiki. If you make the connection to the pipe with a channel the miner will usually be able to escape safely, as the magma will first fill the channeled out tile and then the spot above (channeling a wall from the side removes both the wall and the spot below). Put a floodgate linked to a lever in the corridor so you can switch off the magma on demand (floodgate and mechanism in gate magmasafe).

Magentawolf: Try disabling the Retreive Wounded job on most of your dwarves.
You could also try deconstructing the beds that do not have traction benches directly next to them.

Better disable it on all dwarfs, or lock the surgeon in the hospital alone with the patient.
