DF Gameplay Questions / Building into a river
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:53:27 am »
So I've built my fortress at the center of a place where a brook meets a minor river (something like that), and I want to dig down past the river.  Now, I've waited until winter and have dug out some ice and designated up/down stairs to be built, like so:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

However, I got a "Could Not Find Path" error when my masons went to try to build the stairs.  Is there a way around this?  Or will I just have to dig around the river?

Set squad bolts to 500, build something like 1000-2000 bolts, set uniform to crossbows only, recreate squad if it doesnt help. They tend to claim forbidden or unreachable bolts...

Mein got!  Thanks for the advice.  Except I think the reason they weren't taking any bolts was because the militia captain had died and I didn't notice! =S

They're my only defence left on my 50-dwarf fort. =(  Stupid goblins have killed the rest and babies are keeping new migrants with skills from comin'!  Ah well, time to recruit from the civvies anyways...

OK, I'm sure this has been asked a billion trillion times, but how does one get one's marksdwarves to equip ammunition?  I've got a good 200 bone bolts (I hate that they come in stacks of 5.  There's not a way to consolidate them, is there?) and I've made sure that the marksdwarves are assigned bolts (of any material) in the Ammunition screen of the military menu (and that the hunters get none, since I don't need hunters).  Yet, for some reason, they just aren't picking up any bone bolts, even though I've assigned them some...
Do they have quivers? Are they currently active in the military, or in civilian mode?

They have quivers and they won't take ammunition in either mode.  Does the amount assigned make any kind of difference?

I'll play 3rd, as Brother Savo!

For religion...  Will we be all worshiping Armok or something?  Will we be monotheistic?

Done, done, and done.

Hello?  Beets!

Let's hope they don't come back...

Oh, of course!  I never considered embarking with stone, hah!  Thanks!

Get Wood!

I tend to have to completely deforest the local area to create my mini-fort. I know you can take away lethal stone by replacing the raws but...I just can't...so...much...humour...

I just hole up and use hunting rifles. Going toe to toe with the walking dead seems to be suicide for my humans, despite having decent armour and weapons. (Quite realistic I imagine  :D)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I was good and wooded up.  With walls and stuff.  But the only way for me to get caravans was to leave an opening in my wall, and I never got it closed in time when an ambush or invasion showed up...

I also have the problem of not having enough stuff to trade.  Normally, I just make dozens of bins of stonecrafts.  But now that I can't, I make a couple of wood, because it's usually at a premium, and then butcher animals.  In this game, I almost had cotton production up and running, but then I got owned.

In any case, I'm trying different stuff out for the succession game, and hoping beyond hope that I can find an embark that has both lots of wood AND will let me grow useful crops.  Because forests have awful ones.

Dorf me as Savi, one of the above-ground doomed dwarves.

It's too bad we can't add in something ridiculous like the creatures from Syrupleaf.  Because THEN we'd be hard-pressed to survive.  Where are the goblin invasions, anyways?
There was one in my turn and it was captured and blended by serated disc traps.

And in my paranoia, I installed so many traps that it's gonna have to be a two- or three-squad invasion that'll get past it...  Then of course there're the cages and weapons traps at the original walled entrance, and then a bridge of traps, and then a small line of last-defence traps.
