If it's in the top part with the turn stuff, then everyone knows about it.

Also a note:
I only have interceptors and squads told to automatically go to threats actually go to threats only if the threat is within a reasonable distance. Meaning if you say "Make this squad attack any alien threats", I'll stick to something like the same continent, unless you specifically say otherwise.

For South Africa to Australia:
Distance+speed (non-mission) are pretty abstracted, and they really only come into if needed to settle a comparison between two things with two speeds. For distances, you should be able to look at a map and eye it. But as a direct answer to your question, it's relatively close.

And ranger, there are no plasma weapons? Or injuries from plasma weapons. Generally you can only really research stuff like wounds, alien tech, etc. if you or people sharing tech with you have experienced those wounds. Same goes for most things.

Turn 1, Phase 1
It Begins
The next few days at all the bases were home to lots of busywork getting everything ready for when the aliens came back, and they were ready not a moment too soon. There are many reported UFO sightings across the world.

However, something special just happened. UFO sightings are being reported in from around the world, and there are numerous confirmed UFOs visible via sight and radar at all the major bases.

Indonesia is being attacked by aliens!
UFO in Saudi Arabia detected and is being intercepted by HHS!
Alien UFO sighted in Switzerland!
Germany is being attacked by aliens!
North Korea attack is being attacked by aliens!
Aliens sighted in Egypt!

Modern Equipment
It's what the other people have said so far. It's the equipment used by an average squad of a first world nation. (Read: US)
A squad with modern equipment will by default have some explosives, like grenades, but not RPGs. No specialists, but modern armor, weapons, etc.
Nation Relations
While you don't get to see my extra-awesome spreadsheet for it, there will be updates for the extreme majority of relation changes. (Like "Nation X declares war on Y! Nation Z has made an alliance with Nation F!")
Production/Research Timing
Production takes 1 turn unless stated otherwise. (Like, it'll be ready in the turn containing the order to make something)
Research can easily take multiple turns, but development is immediate.
Phases
Turns can be divided into phases depending on things happening. Phases can be ignored and you can make your plan like usual, but things can take phases to complete, like sending out a ship in Turn 0, and getting it in turn 1.1. The first phase after a full turn has the usual report and stuff, like this post. All the other phases usually only have the stuff that changed since the previous phase.
In short: Ignore phases unless you don't want to.

Kiryu-Kai
Treasury: 25, 25/turn
Quickly after beginning operation, the labs were divided up into small sections, with teams of 3 and 2 scientists working on their own projects, along with a handful of solo projects.
Eventually the reports start pouring in.
Research Reports
Whitehawk Mounted Machinegun
This was a fairly easy task, though it seems the scientists sadly didn't innovate much.
The main problem with fitting a gun onto the Whitehawk is ammunition, controlling, and weight. We were able to solve ammunition and weight by deciding to use a moderate sized minigun for the weapon and fitting it below the area where the nose of the craft is. To allow control and aiming, we were able to redesign some machinery, then wire it to the whitehawk's control suite by tapping into an avionics package's wiring and using that to hook up the gun's control software. The end result is a reliable autoloading minigun controlled by the pilot. As a bonus, the minigun is relatively cheap, so it doesn't add on any credits.
New aircraft available for purchase - Whitehawk BC-37:G [18c/u]
All Whitehawks have been upgraded to the 37:G model

Night Vision Goggles
Extremely easy task. Scientists were able to go beyond expectations.
We were able to call some contacts and do some digging to find a NVG project mothballed for political reasons. It was a huge goldmine, and after some minor modifications, we were able to procure the blueprints for new NVGs of extreme quality.
New equipment available for purchase - NVG [1c/4units]

Body Armor
None of the scientists were able to innovate in this field. They can be left alone and continue doing this, reassigned, or given a more specific project goal.

Light Jeep w/ Mounted Turret
This was extremely easy for the scientists, who managed to meet expectations.
A friend of a friend was able to give us some contact information for a rather stereotypical light jeep. It should be able to do everything a jeep can at a relatively cheap price.
New vehicle available for purchase - Light Scout Jeep [6c/u]

Sniper Rifles
This was extremely easy for the scientists. The project was able to meet its goal.
Our first idea somehow paid off - we questioned the manufacturer of the X-78.C rifle as to the presence of any sister sniper rifles, and they introduced us to the S-41.A, a prototype sniper rifle. Some demonstrations at their shooting range demonstrated a solid sniper rifle which should meet expectations. The prototype nature makes it relatively expensive for a gun, though.
New equipment available for purchase - S-41.A [2c/u]

Flamethrowers
This was easy for the scientists, as they managed to go a decent amount above what was anticipated.
Flamethrowers are pretty simple. You shoot a gas at a poor person's face, and light the gas on fire. With this in mind, we were able wrangle together a nice flamethrower, but since we had a ton of extra time and budget, we decided to go further and expand on the design. We now have a flamethrower which can also shoot flaming balls of gas at long range targets with little collateral damage, provided the soldier doesn't miss.
New equipment available for production - Hybrid Flamethrower [3c/u]

Theoretical Laser Weaponry
There was no innovation on this project. You can reassign, repeat, wait, specify or take smaller steps.

ARC
Treasury: 20 Credits, 25/turn
The program actually briefly went into debt. They were strongly advised not to do so again, even if it was only five credits over the limit. But still. Strongly advised.
Not much has happened in the compound, really. The patrols of Albatross squad are now a familiar sight, and Alpha+Beta squads are excited to see the new X-78 rifles. There's also apparently rumors of a "superhero spandex suit".
Research Reports
Mobile and Defensive Body Armor
The project was pretty complex, but the staff was able to hit expectations nicely.
There wasn't really any research required for a new suit. Scientists simply had to toy with existing materials to allow the armor to stay light enough for maximum mobility on the field. They were able to find a common brittle material on the market, and put it through a series of 'tests' to change the structure, making the material softer, yet still as hard.
In order to keep the mobility of each joints, the scientists decided to make a chainmail-type suit out of this material, with microchains joined together to get a flexible yet durable combat suit. The nature of the suit allows it to cover much more of the body, and therefore offer more protection than your typical bulletproof armor.
In addition, we were able to easily locate military grade grappling hooks on the market and turn them into an attachment for the suit.

Although easy, the scientists haven't had much success.
Without aliens to train the dogs against, we couldn't really do much other than design a program to attempt to train them to be more obedient and lethal.
New Unit Available for purchase - Attack Dogs - [5c/10u]Flamethrowers
An extremely easy project as proven by the expectation-meeting-scientists.
We were able to find a flamethrower available for purchase, and have modified the fuel supply for it to become extremely hot on contact with anything, and stick. It probably hurts.

Alien Communications
This is a special research assignment.
We've spent this entire time calibrating the various communication equipment we control in different ways in an attempt to find if the Aliens communicate on any possible medium we can monitor. However, we got lucky and for about ten seconds with a very specific calibration, we got some interferance that doesn't seem to be human based. The audio log is saved to the research hard drives, but it's definitely not obvious at a first look. More research may be required to find out what the audio log is.

Research Report
Medium IFV
This is of moderate complexity, but since it's basically entire just development, the Scientists were able to pull through with a good result.
This wasn't too difficult. We pulled some blueprints from the military database and added some modifications for it. The new design has two miniguns on the front with numerous protected cameras, giving a 360 view in the cockpit. On the top, it has a relatively large machine gun controlled by someone inside. The back has an armored hatch controlled via electronic systems. It houses about 12 people, including the pilot, which can be a soldier.

Some people were angered by not following the "In the case of an alien invasion" plan to the letter, but it seems to be going fine so far. The soldiers have arrived at the base and everyone is working to their best capacity.

Research Reports
Pre-Invasion Mayhem
This is a special assignment.
We've done some work in the field regarding this. A few people were discretely questioned, and the behavior of the nations analyzed. Rumblings of the coming political situation first occured about two months before the invasion. The U.S. Secretary of State seems to be the origin of the collapse of the local alliances, but we've been unable to question him. Off the record, it may be a good idea to detain him forcefully.
Other Defense Programs
This is a special assignment.
A couple of Alien Defense Projects were announced publicly, but most were private. Some strategically placed pre-invasion agents were accessed and we found the identities of their programs. A lead in Netherlands did not result in any programs being discovered, but we found that many political figures may be able to divert funding towards our program. We perhaps should pursue this further.
UFO MonitoringA mostly development-based assignment, the scientists have been able to exceed expectations.
We were able to modify our satellite dishes to detect distortions in the atmosphere caused by the speed of the alien craft, and have software cross-reference it with our databases and conventional radar. We should now be able to detect alien craft moving around.
Now able to detect UFOs over Main Base
Squad Support Machine Gun
A development based assignment where the scientists exceeded expectations.
The X-78 was modified to be fed via belt, have slightly larger projectiles, and a much better rate of fire. This was at the cost of weight and the people required to man it. It has some legs able to be deployed and is now operated by two people.
New equipment available for production: MX-78 Belt-Fed Machine Gun [4c/u]

UFO detected above North America!
A H-36 is immediately sent to the UFO.
The visual feed from the interceptor shows a small stereotypical saucer type craft.
The interceptor immediately fires a Harasser missile, which misses the first time around. The harasser's navigational system reroutes the missile around and goes in for a second time.
Suddenly, the Harrasser detonates right at the hull of the alien ship. The H-36's pilot immediately pulls back to avoid damage, and after the explosion subsides...
The UFO is still alive. It appears to have a single engine disabled, but is still going straight.

The pilot starts to get warnings and alerts across the cockpit - The alien craft seems to of hit the H-36 with a beam, which pierced the engine casing. Luckily, the pilot is able to regain control of the craft and fires his second harasser.

The harasser misses. Again. It attempts to reroute to get to the alien craft, but misses its shot by a small amount due to the UFO dodging. It comes around for yet another attempt, and this time finally hits the craft.
This explosion seems to do it. The UFO's engine that looked disabled before has a huge explosion, and the flaming UFO goes down to the land below. The closest airport is evacuated by the government to clear an emergency landing space for the damaged interceptor.
Battle Summary: UFO down, Interceptor requires repairs. 2 harassers expended.

The interceptor manages to get a shot of the wreckage before landing. There's no signs of life and no actual crashed craft. The craft exploded into large pieces that litter the crash site.

((Sheesh. That battle was entirely subsequent 1's and 6's for both sides.))

The civilians definitely feel a bit safer with the patrolling military squads, but they don't really know who exactly to thank for the protection. The employees at AAET do admit they feel a bit proud for it.
Research Report
Long-Range Communication
This was a research and development, but the scientists got pretty lucky and exceeded their goals and time guess.
The scientists were able to come up with a ingenious solution - Through extremely careful calculation of pathways through space, the communication arrays previously used for communicating with the now-gone satellites can have the ability to basically transmit data via space without satellites. Via maps of wreckage and debris in space around the planet and their orbits, signals from specialized dishes can bounce off the debris if planned right, and keep on doing so until they hit their destination. It's much more secure than using internet cables, and a bit more reliable. It can also be sent to any facility with a large enough dedicated satellite dish.
The technology is ready to use right now.

New communication method available - Orbital Debris Communication System, or ODCS.
The most secure method of communication, able to be received by any player/person with a large satellite dish, but can only be sent by owners of this tech.

HHS
Treasury: 51 credits, 31/turn
As it happens, being what's basically a new military of your country brings plenty of attention. Luckily, there are some pretty good PR experts within the program staving off hostile attention. Now to win against both aliens and rebels!

Research Reports
Light IFV
Sadly, this isn't really possible, because a small vehicle is something like a bike. You can translate the progress from this into light vehicles or an IFV, though.

Combat!

As the Whitehawk touches down near the rebel base, yells of surprise start coming out, and what appear to be rather relatively well equipped soldiers file out of their camps in response.
Bolts of gunfire hit the Whitehawk, richocheting off harmlessly as the aircraft's rear door slowly opens. Five soldiers inside aim their guns outside of the craft through the openings in the door, shooting into the growing crowd of waiting soldiers, with numerous shots hitting some of the rebels, who collapse to the floor as the high-speed bullets make their path straight through their bodies. One by one, more rebels fall as they rush for cover.

The Whitehawk door finally touches down and the operatives sprint to cover below. A storm of projectiles scream out, with almost every one hitting an operative, though most just graze the victim. One operative is propelled backwards by a dead-on bullet. Realizing the power of the X-78 rifles, the operatives aim towards the enemy cover and riddle it with bullets, killing most of the people hiding behind.

The following operation is quite easy. Most of the resistance was found when landing, and the operatives clean out the rest of the base. After finishing up, the bodies are counted on both sides.

HHS Casualties: 2 dead, 6 wounded, No dying
Rebel Casualties: 73 dead, 2 wounded

Upon hearing of the succesful operation, HHS gets an immediate reward of 20 credits from their government. When given the order, they should be able to head back home by Turn 2.

Further expansion on nation relations:

All nations have a relation level with each other nation. Nations with a player program running inside are no different. Your host nation can still declare war, make alliances, etc. on its own. Player programs can heavily affect these relations (If you give a nation an unlimited supply of alien weapons, it'll probably like you more).

So if a nation doesn't like another, they can enforce a trade embargo, declare war, tell the local program to attack them, etc.. This is rare, but it can happen with or without player influence.

4057
Why bother with limiting? What's the difference between a 100 planet game by itself and linked? Either way, one GM (or multiple, if that one GM gets help) with one thread runs a game involving 100 planets. If the GM can handle it, why stop them?

Other Games / Re: Starbound - We have lift off.
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:31:59 pm »
Uh, no. A year ago, in a clearly alpha unfinished state, the developer said "hey, it's playable right now, heck I could even release it as-is and call it 1.0!"
Except they didn't.

But I worded my previous argument/stance horribly, so let me rephrase it;
  • There are daily blog posts concerning the progress of the game
  • You can play the latest version of the game, though it can be buggy
  • There is consistent progress being made
  • It is not released yet
  • You cannot say developers didn't do what they promised when they haven't actually released yet
Admittedly, the PR has been horrible, but I personally don't think making one of the worst "jokes" of all times warrants the disgust and hatred Starbound has been getting as a whole. After all, in the end, they listened to the community. As for the other PR stuff, I personally think it doesn't matter that much, but even if you think it does, it shouldn't warrant outright hatred and disgust towards Starbound.
To sum what I think up, again, I don't think they deserve any hate at all for the game development, and I personally don't think their PR shows any malice, but even if you think they do, attacking the game so blatantly isn't really deserved.

That's my final post regarding this, since this thread is unnaturally hostile. Instead, I'll just wonder why I seem to have the opposite opinion of the majority of the internet/bay12/whatever on almost every "issue" like this.

4059
Is sending squads to other nations to assist in protection allowed? As well as sharing research and things? I assumed assistance would be minimal from other nations. :/

It's allowed, but remember that all the players are outranked by others in their government.
Also notice the pre-invasion stuff in the main post.
AkA fun stuff may occur.

4060
Crap. Knew I forgot something. Post edited to include research stuff.

Please reread the research description, and as for modern equipment, see what ranger said.

For a short explanation:
You allocate scientists to research projects.
Research projects do not cost anything
You can buy more scientists via catalog.
No, space does not matter.

Turn 0
The calm before the storm

The commanders all arrived at their bases at similar times. Each base was bustling with people, ready to protect their nation to the very end. However, the individual programs were not fully ready yet. They were missing equipment and soldiers for their upcoming battle.

Each commander had a dossier on the state of the world prepared. Each was not very pretty, yet still remained optimistic. The societies of Earth had not collapsed into anarchy, and all the governments were still functioning. The cities shelled during the initial attacks had many survivors, and the militaries are finally regrouping against the threat of future attacks by the aliens.
While it still looks doubtful humanity stands a fighting chance if the aliens actually tried, all the commanders could do was hope.

Spoiler: The World (click to show/hide)

Recruiting
The first thing any self respecting program would do is hire special op squads, or maybe military squads, if they feel like risking it. Special Op squads are the backbone of (most) programs, and do most of the heavy lifting. Think of them like soldiers in XCOM. They cost quite a bit though, at 20 credits per 20 person squad. They level up as a whole squad, but you can equip them individually.
Military Squads, or their equivalent (Russia has Volunteer Squads, which are literally free and not nearly as skilled as regular military squads. North Korea has conscript squads, which are cheaper, worse, military squads.) are also an option. Military squads are more or less the generic mooks of your organization. They can do everything SpecOps squads can, but at much less effectiveness. They can't level up at all, and can only equip stuff (as a whole squad) you have production lines for. Best used for either throwing extreme amounts of people at a problem, doing low-level missions, etc.
Production
Production is handled quite simply. When you can produce something, it'll show up in your production report, with its cost. Then, you can build it and get it the next turn. Alternatively, you  can build a satellite production base and assign the new base to a single production line. Production lines offer virtually infinite amounts of an item. If you setup a production line for plasma guns, everyone and their kids in your program can get a plasma gun. You can also ship production lines to other players, letting them use that near infinite supply at the cost of you not being able to.
Research and Development
You can research anything you want, within reason. Research is, well, researching something and figuring out how to do things. Development is the practical use of something. They're not mutually exclusive, so you can research and develop an item at the same time. However, while research is a guaranteed success after X time, production is more iffy. For example, if you wanted to research a Hyperdrive for some reason, you'll definitely be able to find out how hyperdrives work within a reasonable time period, but the actual design relies on the development side. With good bonuses/rolls, you can get a super hyperdrive which does awesome things, or a hyperdrive that blows up half of the time you try to use it.
In short: You can research anything. Research succeeding is guaranteed. Quality of designs/physical products gained from R&D is not guaranteed, and can be influenced with bonuses.

Keep in mind research isn't limited to reverse engineering. Among lots of other things, doing stuff like "Try to find people selling a fast attack ship in the market" falls under research.
Researching & Scientists
Allocate an amount of researchers to any research project you want to start. Research projects do not cost funds, only scientists, and maybe their topics of research. (Meaning if you autopsy a corpse, say goodbye to that corpse.)
See your personnel tab for your scientists amount. For an example of researching: "I allocate 15 scientists to Project A, and 5 to Project B"

Anything else
Ask. Please.
"Missing content" can usually be handled via researching it. Want ships? Look for them. Or design them.

Most likely thought unimportant, North Korea, upon seeing signs of alien invasion, activated PROJECT SAVE-THE-GLORIOUS-LEADER and the local military was immediately converted to a force determined to keep their nation on the top, where it belonged.

To facilitate the new goal of the military, an unused underground palace was converted into a military base. The conscripts get a bit confused at the chandeliers in the gun range, but other than that, it's a pretty good location. Thanks to the nationalism found in North Korean, it was easy getting two squads of "volunteers" to begin with.

Area 51
Treasury: 135 Credits, 31/turn
When the attacks first started occurring, the reaction of the employees in Area 51, sans their annoyance at the US government for ignoring their warnings, was fairly nonchalant. However, the alien invasion was their lucky break, increasing funding yet again, along with a nice sum of money to start up with, 15c. The installation was expanded, and a new mission received.

Treasury: 120 credits, 25/turn
Australia was hit pretty hard during the initial attacks, but remained in one shape. Funding immediately went to an alien defense program, along with resources from production centers confiscated by the government. In the middle of Australia, a new compound was constructed, with underground lanes to many sources of resources, to allow equipment no matter what.

No one really thought Syria would divert their attention to the aliens. With the invasion, the rebels of the nation grew in power. No one really knows how, but some say increased support for their cause, while others blame the aliens for supplying them.
Regardless of this, Syria started pouring extreme amounts of their income and GDP into an alien defense program, even going so far as to have it absorb a large part of the military. Experts in weapon production from around the world were hired and brought to the new central military base. While it would have to juggle the rebels and the aliens, the new branch of Syria's government did not intend to fail.

Stuff

Strawman detected. Bias detected.

That said, I don't know why I'm particularly surprised that an overhyped re-do of an overhyped game that languished in post-release development hell full of bad decisions had similar problems except worse. At least Terraria had a stable full release before they started piling on unbalanced grindy crap to make it feel longer.

Nobody is saying Starbound wasn't fun. The issue is that the devs promised, didn't deliver, and then treated the community like shit for daring to question them. The shitstorm would have been so much smaller if they'd just kept working on the damn game.

That's pretty idiotic. The developers are still making a game. That's like looking at something someone's in the middle of cooking, then complaining that it doesn't taste like how the person said it would taste like when done.

I can dig that dev-quote that said that the game could be published as a 1.0 version... about a year ago.

Yeah.

This game is a train-wreck.
It's a train wreck for missing it's release date?

I'm disappointed in the lack of stable updates (mainly given the fact that they're using early access), but I really don't understand how everyone despises Starbound now. It's making steady progress with daily blog posts that actually have some content in them, they're nearing 1.0/stable release, and people are still hating on it for their "lack of updates" and a supposed PR fiasco a while ago.

What about "Artifacts"?
Basically objects agreed between the GMs of all/certain games (within this system, of course) to have some effect. For example, one artifact in a magic world could allow any user to perform something via the most relevant method in that world. If you have an artifact that shoots fireballs, it could "morph" into a wand in a fantasy game, while be a futuristic fireball cannon in some other game. Artifacts would also definitely stay on characters.
