DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mysterious construction- guess it
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:53:49 pm »
He's taking longer than I thought, but heres more info:

A strange mood will use the dwarfs highest skill that IS "moodable" (look in wiki).
He took a masons workshop, I forgot to mention it.
He also is using 1 rope reed fiber cloth (also forgot to mention).
And *usually* the item produced is one of their likes, but in this case I agree that it most likely will not be a bucket or bracelet.

EDIT: I'll post the results in about 10-30 minutes (I have to go somewhere and at this rate, i'l take that long to get some guesses.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mysterious construction- guess it
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:40:57 pm »
So this is the 3rd time one of my dwarves has had a strange mood (oddly, they have all been possessed moods), and I saw he was best at masonry (he is better at other things, but masonry is his best skill that's used by moods). So he grabs:
-(1) Olivine
-(1) Limestone
-(1) Gypsum
-(14) Deer bones
-(1) Pine log
-(1) Rough fortification agate

So I'm thinking, "Wtf?! He's a mason not a mason-capenter-bone crafter-gem cutter/setter!! So I'm making this challenge to see If anyone can guess what he's making, because I have no idea. I'll post what is was after he's done (probably in 5 minutes, I'll leave you guys some time). Whatever it is, I think it'll be precious.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: FPS WILL NOT budge
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:12:41 pm »
Set it to 0, it didn't help or hurt the fps, I was noticing that the g_fps was always the same value as the fps in game (idk why), so I uncapped it to see what happened, and why not just leave it if theres no effect?

I'm considering transfering to another computer, my family has one that is new and has about 1-2 GB ram (Idk what, but its a LOT), a 3Ghz CPU, and just about everything else is really high, only problem is that half of the day its in use, and I don't want to go through the trouble of transferring the save each time I get kicked off and want to keep playing. (And on a side note, it would make me hate playing df on this computer.)

OS: Ubuntu 9.10
RAM: About 716 (other background programs use some up)
CPU: 1.5 Ghz
Video card: (AGP, so it would be hard to upgrade) nVidea e-GeForce FX 5200 (128MB) (and possibly supports OpenGl because it didn't crash when I activated that option, but it didn't improve either)

Anything else? And I don't really see how that would make a difference in this, YES it does make a HUGE difference from computer to computer, but I really mean that I do know that I can run DF under some circumstances (I almost said settings, but then it wouldn't make sense that it doesn't run at 30fps all the time, as it only did that once right after I altered the settings the first time) on this computer with a near-stable 30 fps, and it just won't go back to 30fps, or anywhere close.

EDIT: oops, I forgot to say it's 716MB of RAM, if that makes a difference.

DF Gameplay Questions / FPS WILL NOT budge

So I've been trying to get my fps up from 10-15, and it has been like that since I started playing. So I did all the things that I thought might help, and they did, got it to 30, but then it inched down to 10 again and it has never gone up to 17+ since, and I've been trying EVERYTHING!! I've uncapped g_fps, and fps, turned off temp and weather, changed the priority (in the system and in the files) to max, my population is only 49, there is minimal junk lying around (but I do occasionally smash some), there are few animals, my dwarves don't have pages of "coverings" on them (in fact none), I set high traffic areas so the pathfinder has less to do, and not much is going on. I know it can improve, as one time I got it to stay at 30 for about 10 minutes (on the same fort), and I have no idea why fps refuses to go anywhere near it again. HELP!!

At my fort: Rain, rain, rain, rain, more rain, and even more rain. It's been raining for about 4 years straight now... I think I might have to build an ark soon...

Scaffolding to build a floor of walls 1 z-level down, they have to build from the same z-level and so it would go like:

         +|                     +||                       +|||
         +|                     +||                       +|||
         +|     ---->         +||       ---->         +|||
+++++|               ++++||                  +++|||
                   += floor(scaffolding) |= Wall
And so on and so forth, and it would be MUCH larger.

DF Gameplay Questions / Suspended "floor"
« on: January 07, 2011, 09:23:06 pm »
So I want my statue garden outside, and I found a nice spot, it's in the middle of a canyon (river at the bottom), and it provides protection, light, and an easy location to make a waterfall. But here's the thing, there's no existing natural floors there, and so I'd have to build all of them. Well if I build floors I can't build on top of them, and I can't build walls underneath without extreme micro-managing, and building one row at a time and having to constantly take out scaffolding 1 piece at a time (more micro-managing) and build wall there. So is there really any way to build suspended "floors" and actually be able to build on them?

Ok, I pressed tab, and found they are just cave fish and lobsters, I zoomed to them, and they are about 12 z-levels under my mine, but why are they there, in stacks or 4-12, already prepared, and within 10 squares of each other?

I had my bookkeeper update my stocks, and while I was looking over them I found something weird. There is about 15 (prepared) blue sharks and about 5 (prepared) angelsharks somewhere on my map, although they aren't mine. Why does it show these? I'm in a spot with rivers but sharks need ocean to exist. Could this have something to do with there being an un-named amphibian man civilization near?

This is a short but just soooo uncommon... When (just now) my 10 miners decided to go on break AT THE SAME TIME! Now I can't use my only miners to mine... nice...

Also don't be surprised if you find a huge 90z+ cavern somewhere, I found they are common around volcanoes ;D
