DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did you learn Dwarf Fortress?
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:37:01 pm »
Wiki + figuring it out.

For me, tutorials were not very good because if I wanted specifics, I'd have to wait for the topic to go by on a vid, or I'd have to scan through the stuff I already figured out.

Still haven't figured out most military stuff, even though I've been playing for a while, somewhere around... idk, 8 months? (I try to get a squad to train and all they do is sit there... Archery range (assigned), check, bolts, check, crossbows, check, squad set to train, check, dwarfs training, NOPE).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Starving nobles?
« on: February 18, 2012, 02:24:20 pm »

All of these nobles were appointed, left their city, moved to "bouldertrades" and starved, then the next one was appointed and so on.

This has happened in multiple civs, worlds, and on 0.34.01 and 0.34.02

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Starving nobles?
« on: February 18, 2012, 01:21:09 pm »
I genned my second DF2012 world just now, and looking through the history, I found something that the first one also had. The generals of one of the civs kept starving (and another would be appointed, then starve) in the same city. This has happened multiple times and in multiple civs, with multiple nobles (generals and kings/queens, but not in this case (see below))

Bug?

(also, the ruler of that civ is a vampire (yea yea, nothing new), but he has an interesting number of 5014 kills...)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DF doesn't like nobles either...
« on: February 17, 2012, 08:22:00 pm »
I was looking through the history of the possible civs I could be part of, to see if there was anything interesting. There was.

Since the year 94, 12 generals/kings/queens of the civ "The Iron of Spires" have died. I checked the cause for most of them (I came to a conclusion after checking about 3), and they all died from starvation in the capital (Bouldertrades).

We aren't the only ones to hate and annihilate tenderly care for our nobles.

Well, I'm back. The OP's comp in here is sending a distress signal.
(df,) You broke it, didn't you.
*fixes comp*
There. Try it now.

Hmm. This comp must not be calibrated to someone of your... generous... ness. I'll add a few zeros to the maximum priority.
You look great, by the way, very healthy.
Try it now.

You seem to have defeated it's processing capacity. Well done. I'll just lower the ceiling.

DF Gameplay Questions / Forever frozen brook -Need help
« on: November 10, 2011, 08:14:20 pm »
I've played DF for quite some time, but never embarked anywhere too cold. Now, I embarked on a cold (not freezing) spot, but the brook there never thaws. There is a volcano and so a magma source that I could use to thaw the brook, but I don't know the best way to do that. My forts typically depend heavily on fishing for a few years, and I'm now running low on meat (no hunters yet) and I'm struggling to use farming as my main food source this early in the fort (less than a year).

1) Best way to thaw a brook? (Will tunneling out the rock 2 Z levels below the ice (rock below the rock below the ice) and flooding it with magma melt the ice?)
2) Even if it is fully thawed (and flowing), will fish return to it?

No modding other than the lazy newb pack.

I just noticed that in thoughts and preferences, EVERY attribute is perfect, they are all PERFECTLY fit, every sense is perfect, every dwarf is absolutely perfect. I have no idea what is going on. (every dwarf with the exception of the new baby)

EDIT: I also never used runesmith except on one occasion only to make 2 dwarves happy (from fine) after a death occured.

Good until I very, very, very quickly get goblin sieges on me for my wealth, while my fort doesn't even have a militia (It's barely even 2 years old).

I also think it may be a bug, as my farmer (novice mason) is also now making masterpiece rock tables...

And, after checking thoughts and preferences, there is no relation between the crafters and the crafted items.

EDIT: And now my other farmer (somehow also novice mason) is making masterpiece tables. I say glitch, though I have no idea what the details are or what caused it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Masterpieces out the wazoo
« on: August 24, 2011, 12:24:06 pm »
I was going about maintaining my fort when I see That my broker created a masterpiece, I looked at what it was, and his skills, he made a masterpiece bed, and he is only a competent carpenter. I thought it was just a bit of luck, then he proceeded at churning out masterpiece after masterpiece. He has so far made 8 masterpieces out of 10 tries, and he is only a competent carpenter, nowhere near legendary! How is this possible?!?!

EDIT: Now my mechanic is making masterpiece rock doors!! Just like the carpenter. It seems everyone is making masterpieces and I see absolutely no reason for this to be happening, in fact, the mechanic who is making the doors is only dabbling, and he has made about 4 masterpieces! What?!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Empty Volcano
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:52:35 pm »
I had the same question, you must have HFS off (bottom layer), having the magma layer on doesn't fix it, turn HFS on and gen a new world. (To turn it back on, go into the seed you used and find the bottom layer, its with the other layers, and turn it on.)

EDIT: Oh, and you'll be able to tell if its off by:
No HFS
No magma in volcanoes
No cotton candy

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How you like to world gen
« on: January 27, 2011, 06:52:37 pm »
So I've been messing around with the advanced world gen, and I just wanted to see what everybody likes to do with their world generations. I personally like setting the altitude variables to max, and the volcanoes to max. I would also like to know: Is there anybody else who likes to open about 2-4 windows of df and have them all world gen at the same time, trying to find the perfect world faster?
