DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:20:53 pm »
I think I heard it's possible to show/view this, but idk how. Is it possible (if so, how) to view why the world genorator rejects worlds? It would really help, the seed I'm working on is causing 1000+ rejects, and I can't see why.

Yes, I have HFS turned off (for more space to build), but the magma layer is on, I thought that would still keep volcanoes full.

Large update: I tried a different spot, and the same thing happened, I predict every single one of the 100+ volcanoes on the map is glitched like this... have fun with the save!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / EMPTY volcano
« on: January 24, 2011, 08:23:17 pm »
So recently, my computer has been making glitchier and glitchier worlds, now its at the point where it takes 500+ rejects to find a suitable one, and even then every other tile is glitched. I've finally been able to embark on one of the worlds, a volcano, flux, obsidian, sand, a stream... Well, I look around, and it's nice... then I see this empty spot, zoom up and down.. it's the volcano!! But without obsidian walls, then it hit me, IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO MAGMA. A giant 100z pit of sparta (to certain doom) now exists in DF. (BTW, because it's glitched, you can see all 3 caverns and the magma sea!)

Save:http://www.mediafire.com/?vgk3hph2k8zdtvu (But be warned, it's an FPS killer.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Embarking
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:39:39 pm »
I could only leave it running overnight on my linux computer, but that's what I'll do, I don't like it when embarks beat me (especially when I haven't even embarked yet). I can't leave it running on the win7 computer though, because after about 1-5 minutes of not responding, it crashes and closes.

EDIT: I'm going to try a different spot in the world and see if it embarks.

EDITEDIT: It's definitely a glitched location, more specifically, the volcano itself is glitched somehow. After figuring out the whole world isn't glitched, and (from different locations of spots) I figured the volcano is the glitched part. Although IK this is a glitched area because my linux computer will not load an area if it is glitched (when I try other glitched maps (like the Candy space elevator) the exact same thing happens that is now happening).

DF Gameplay Questions / Embarking
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:16:01 pm »
This is similar to a thread I saw earlier, but now I need help. So I'm on my new computer, 2+ GB RAM (forgot exact specs) and a 3Ghz processor, and I'm trying to embark on this one sweet spot, but whenever I embark (after the preparing for the journey carefully screen), the game freezes, and will not respond. I am trying again, this is the 7th try, why is it doing this? (I run windows 7) This computer can should handle DF well (it has 80 fps with 7 dwarves, 50-60 with 50 dwarves).

EDIT: I'm trying to embark on my linux computer, but it is also having the same problem, and my linux computer has NEVER had a problem embarking... Isn't glitchy embarking a sign of a glitched area?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: crash on embark
« on: January 19, 2011, 09:24:26 pm »
Might just be the game interacting oddly with your OS. I have 2 computers: one runs linux, the other win7. Embarking ALWAYS works fine on my linux computer, but on the win7 computer, it rarely gets to the you have arrived screen. Idk if this might be whats going on, but this is what happens to me on win7. (Just to add on to that, the win7 computer is about 42 times better than the linux one, so that makes me think: OS.)

EDIT: But I am NOT recommending you get a new OS, unless you have linux, in that case, try a different version.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problem with Freezing Ocean?
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:00:47 pm »
Probably, in any biome where there is freezing, it "pauses" the game for a while (freezes the game basically), in your case the data is probably too much for your computer to handle.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military traitors

So some merchants came, and I didn't have the bridges down long enough for them to leave, but I didn't notice. Next, they went mad, and I ordered some of my troops to kill one of their horses, well they went near it, and started attacking each other! It was a mess! They were fighting on the stairs, at first I thought one fell, but then I noticed in the reports that FOR NO REASON, they started fighting each other. Some died, and so I canceled the order to kill the horse (still not dead) and they stop, re-engage the order and they start fighting again. The same thing happened with my other squads, I dont know why. They were all happy, at LEAST quite content, and nobody was tantruming (nobody had in this fort). Then the tantrum spiral started and I decided to take everybody to the circus, but when I got there, the clowns all left, which I do not understand... they love making fun!

EDIT: Jeez, I was so busy recalling exactly what happened I forgot to ask: why?  This ended my fort (also a siege did, in which all 3 groups arrived, at the same time, which I also do not understand), and I don't want to to happen again. Also, why did the clowns leave?

641: You know that his 'Real Life' thing everyone seems to talk about is just some flashy game with boring old 3D graphics and that DF is way superior to it in every single way, including graphics.
644 You don't get it.  Doesn't everybody agree?

Huhwhat? Real life? Whats that?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: underground thieves
« on: January 18, 2011, 06:51:46 pm »
Just a tip to avoid stuff like underground beats, to explore caverns without creating a space for enemies to get into your fort, just dig to the side of a wall, smooth a block of it, then turn it into a fortification, it reveals more cavern and theres no way for enemies to get through it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: storage of artifacts
« on: January 17, 2011, 12:09:59 am »
I put a hallway starting from one of my most walked through hallways to a room that only has that one entrance, with multiple airlocks in the room, and whatever artifacts I can build I do in there (they can't be stolen then... I don't think they can), and I have an artifact only stockpile at the end. Plus in the afore mentioned hallway, there are doors (nearly always locked) on both ends and traps all the way down, no bridge though, didn't feel necessary.

I'm not considering wall grates because you have to make grates, and you can't control what the dwarves will make them out of, you can only control which ones you place, and none of the ones made might be the type you want. With bars, you can control what is made and what is placed.

Do vertical bars block mist? I'm making a water fall in my statue garden, and I'm in a temperate biome, so I don't want dwarves walking into the water fall and having themselves encased in ice if it freezes on them, so I'm thinking about surrounding it in bars.

Oh lol, none of you got it...

'Panama' Tiristraz, Suturer has created Dallithshed, a olivine weapon rack!

Weight: 26 Basic Value: 13200

This is a olivine weapon rack. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with limestone and fortification agate and encircled with bands of olivine and rope reed fiber. This object is adorned with hanging rings of deer bone and menaces with spikes of pine.
On the item is an image of goblins and dwarves in gypsum. The goblins are fighting with the dwarves. The artwork relates to the attack on The Rim of Skulls of The Theater of Naming at Laborstreamy by The New Tick in the midwinter of 153 during Sukxusmumuz, "The Squeezing Attack".
