Good point. And yeah, we went way overboard in Jack's game. I feel kinda bad about it now, since it went something like this.

Jack: Ok, so you just defeated the traitors in the warehouse, what do you do now?

Everyone else: Start a caravan! I'm gonna trade in silk, magic items, scrolls, love potions, linen, foodstuffs, gold, and badger cheese. What gets me the best prices?

Jack: . . .

Anyway, the costs of things would be a problem. I was thinking we could just comb over the lists of equipment and services in the SRD and set some basic prices, at which point the DM would wing it whenever we bought stuff. Just have a standard price and adjust it up and down based on the place you're buying it at and whatnot. Maybe we could have a list of multipliers for cost, like if the town is going through a shortage of a certain item, it's price is multiplied by 3 or you can't find it.

Then again, we could just steer the whole thing in a different direction. I like the idea of playing as monsters and having to fight off the PC races and stuff. It'd be like playing DF with the Kobold camp mod!

I'm slightly confused. What does that have to do with this?

I got this idea from what happened in a D&D game I played in earlier today. Our group, through our bad skills at guarding caravans, acquired a wagon. Then we bought another wagon. We planned on using said wagons (and trade goods) to bait bandits into attacking us, as well as using them to make money trading. My idea for a campaign is that we expand on other parts of the game than just dungeoneering and questing, so maybe instead of fighting through hordes of mooks to get treasure, we try to set up a trade empire, or conquer somewhere, or ally with a nation, or try to reach godhood, etc. Something on a little larger scale, or maybe with a twist. We could be the bad guys, and the DM could send parties of hero's to fight us. We could play as monsters instead of PC's. This might sound like a dumb idea to most people, but it seems like it could be fun to me. Anyone interested?

Here's my roll for health: Here it is!

Woo! Level up! I was going to multiclass into wizard, but I think I'm gonna take another level of rogue. UMD being a class skill, and all. Next session, I'm buying a wand of Cure Light Wounds.

EDIT: And Grek, thanks for being the group accountant. I'd forgotten about the loot from the ambushers.

Where is everyone? The game is starting.

Weasel:
Pros - Save bonus! Scent. Talks, sorta. Great skills. Attach.
Cons - 20' movement speed.

Wait -- It talks? I'm confused.

I don't believe so.  Anybody got suggestions?

*Reads through character sheet*

The most useful would probably be a bird that gives a bonus to a useful skill, but they mostly seem to help auxiliary skills. Maybe a raven or snake, given your intelligence and charisma. A bird would only really be more useful at 3rd level or on, though.

EDIT: Also, was my guy there during the session, or did he temporarily phase out of reality?

Hargram still hasn't done anything useful yet? Bah.

Sorry, I missed the session; I haven't been on the forums in a while and sort of forgot about it. I'll most likely be able to make it next time.

So... Let's see... We're at Talid, the rest of the party is with us now, and we've been attacked by a peasant and some archers. And... there's a ninja? He didn't happen to be one of the caravaneers did he?

Anything else I missed?

I'm all giddy right now! For the past week or so, I've been really depressed, and what I used to love doing just didn't seem all that good. But today, I got off my but and did something unusual for me: I bought shrubberys. Five shrubberys. I got my dad to use his tractor to break up the ground in an area of our yard that's essentially a rock hard dead zone. I turned the dirt a bit with a shovel, raked it flat, got all the rocks out, and so on before planting those shrubberys in a rounded rectangle and planting grass all in the middle. And now I'm all tired. But that bit of manual labor made me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something. That makes me happy.

It's so weird, looking back at what I was doing. It seems pretty dumb, but it's something I've been wanting to do for some time now.

Also, this thread is awesome. I can't think of a place I would want to share this (or even just a place I would share this reluctantly) more than this forum. Thanks!

Creative Projects / Question about OpenGL in 2D
« on: April 25, 2011, 06:22:38 pm »
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dwarf Fortress uses OpenGL for graphics, right? If so, could some knowledgeable programmer point me in the right direction about how to create DF style roguelike graphics? I have a big fat book on OpenGL, but it doesn't seem to say anything about 2D stuff.

I feel totally lame for saying this, but this project is going to have to be put on hold. Not exactly put on hold, but the thread will be. I'll still be working on the project, but it's just having too many obstacles piled in its path for me to feel justified in blathering about it. I know it's going to be really slow going, and I should have waited until I actually had something to show before posting here. I'm sorry.

Two weeks would be fine for me.
