I'd start with python

UNITY, YOU HERETIC

(I kid, Python's another good choice.)

Fish swimming around in a tank ... version 4. Along with a bunch of behind-the-scenes changes, the fish now have an option panel where you can customize some aspects of the simulation, like various constants and options like "use soft boundary", which makes the fish gently turn towards the center of the tank if they swim out of the boundaries, instead of bouncing them off of an imaginary wall.

It's weirdly fun changing the separation and cohesion radii and seeing the fish change formation. I don't know why, but it is. Is it possible to change the minimum and maximum top speeds of the fish? I don't see it in the options, but it's entirely possible that I am just extremely dumb.
Yeah, fiddle with the options some more, there's a couple that change the speed.

I see maximum acceleration, which affects turn speed when the fish start schooling. Update frequency and logic tick length both change the speed of the simulation, but don't allow for control of the range of speeds fish can move at. I meant an option that would let the user clamp the speed fish can move at to be between two values.

You, ah... might want to give a bit more thought to the technical side of things before getting started on this. Procedural generation is a difficult topic to start on, and (someone familiar with Minecraft modding correct me if I'm wrong) I think you have to decompile the game to its Java files and edit the class definitions in those to create a mod, so that might not be the best jumping-off point.

You might want to check out Unity if you're just starting game development. It's a lot easier to understand than most other engines.

If anybody out there wants to learn how to do the internet stuff in Unity, I recorded a couple videos on it. I can promise that I'm almost certainly not the worst teacher on YouTube, but no guarantees.

Networking Tutorials
JavaScript
Part 1
Part 2

C#
Part 1
Part 2

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into the zoom-in-on-target-area feature, and in future videos I might just edit that in afterwards if there's no alternative. I'll also work on being a little clearer and streamlining the topics so I don't arbitrarily jump around (like you said about scope, eerr).

I re-recorded the first series of videos (including a C# version of the same lessons) and recorded a second pair of pairs of videos on networking. I'm gonna change this thread name and shift the topic towards the channel I created for these tutorials (the LP channel was being used as a placeholder with unlisted videos, though I do appreciate the feedback on the LPs). A list of the current tutorials will be in the OP.

So... is this a game you're currently working on? Or is it an idea post? Not a problem one way or the other, but it's not quite clear from your description.

Name: Dumbledalf the Teal Perreden le Fey
Mother's Race: Human
Father's Race: Fairy
Gender: Male
Starting Branch of Magic: Charmbreaking (primarily anti-magic and counterspelling) and Fist Magic (being good at punching people)
Appearance: Perreden is a tall-ish fellow with a fey look about him. He wears flamboyant and swashbuckling attire as he goes about stealing from other wizards, breaking into warded crypts, and generally being a rapscallion and dashing scoundrel. His clothes are a bit tattered and burned in some places, from the many times he overestimated his competence and ended up out of his weight class, but he's still alive and in one piece - which is more than most who steal from magicians can say.

Guys.

Guys.

Have you ever played a video game, waited eight years, and then listened to music from it.

Because I'm listening to classic Runescape's music and holy shit this nostalgia.

Sorry for my outburst earlier.

Don't worry about it, man. I can guarantee I have said vastly stupider things here on Bay12 and I somehow haven't been ostracized yet.

I recorded a series of videos on learning programming with Unity, if anyone's interested.

Part 3

C#

Part 2
Part 3

Disclaimer: I cannot guarantee that I'm not a terrible teacher.

TIL 80% of Unity's users prefer C# over JavaScript. Huh.

I didn't think the content of the game mattered that much which is why i didn't mention it.

You... You do realize you're posting in the 'Other Games' board, right? We're a curious bunch. Details are good.

In a haze of sleep deprivation and delirium, I recorded the C# tutorial videos to go along with the JavaScript ones. If anyone's interested in learning how to program, I should have them up by tomorrow.

Most programming languages are pretty darn similar. If you're familiar with either C# or JavaScript, you can pretty much learn the other's syntax just by watching this video.

On that note, I watched that video and recorded the corresponding trio of videos for C# in a programming tutorial I'm working on. I should be able to have both the JavaScript and C# videos up tomorrow, if anyone's interested. It's pretty basic stuff, but I tried (maybe unsuccessfully) to make it helpful for beginners.
