DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best First Migrant Wave Ever?
« on: April 22, 2011, 05:29:46 pm »
My best first wave was for my current fort.  I only got 6 dwarves but they were all competant-skills in sword/axe/spear dwarves and they brought cows and female yaks and two ducks.  Jump start of my military AND milk and eggs.  It worked out wonderfully for me.

Sounds to me like the kid is playing dress-up... dwarf style.

Before I lost my last fort I can say, with sheer honesty, that my dwarves who were missing SOME kind of limb were my best fighters compared to my perfectly healthy ones.  Hell, my best fighter was a one armed, one eyed female axe dwarf who had about 20 notable kills or so in her name, with a +Bronze battle axe+ she got from a goblin no less, by the time my fort succumbed. It's like when a dwarf loses a limb his Bad-Assness becomes Legendary+5.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you make the grass/moss grow?

You're working on a single pasture? Heck, before I got sick and tired of feeding my animals and removed their [GRAZER] tag I think I had about 5-6 completely walled in 30x30 or so pastures and still found it wasn't enough.

Swallowedgilt has experienced 10 0 months without something involving dwarven mutilation

Grats.  You got the dwarven equivalent of a knitting grandmother who is, literally, going insane over having no knitting material.

Need to break through a cavern before underground gets moss/grass.  As for how to allow above ground to regrow grass... it happens automatically but you need to pasture somewhere else for awhile and make sure people/animals stay away from the area you are trying to regrow.

Is it wrong that reading through this I can only thing of the Baron as either Urist McHannibal or Urist McMarquis de Sade?

So glad my baron keeps banning the export of catapult parts or demanding I make them.  Shame catapults still suck.

I say... we mod in darts to be used in blowguns.  Also if you manage to get animal/plant/fish extract you can apply it to the darts for use as poison to make them effective agaisnt wild life/goblins.  As a side effect... it'd make TWO things useful (being blowguns AND extract) rather then just having them as trade goods/dwarven mistakes!

It's not raws, but worldgen, I think. You can regulate the amount of purely stone-filled z-levels between cavern layers with advanced options.

This, and the higher a cavern's passage density/the lower openness, the 'higher' the cavern is, so it takes up more z-levels - which aren't bound to have much open space in them at all, so a high density, low openness cavern means even more stone.

I gen worlds with 15 levels before the first cavern, 5 levels between caverns, 3 cavern layers, high openness and low density and I meet the magma sea at z-level 70ish. Try it.

I'll give that a try and see what I end up with.  Mastergilt, STRIKE THE EARTH!

PS:  Wow, I died quickly.  I didn't even start in an evil area... and I started off next to 4 skeletal alligators who chased me into the river filled with skeletal carp.

PPS: Okay, take two... a bit farther from the evil area.  Swallowedgild, STRIKE THE EARTH!

On year 150, I started on year 125, my fort has crumbled. It took me 52 Z levels to hit my FIRST BLOODY CAVERN and almost immediately as I did that and I got my wells, looms, and smelters running since I ALSO just hit iron in the cavern did I get hit by not one, not two, but five sieges all at once, all mounted on toads/crocs, all with trolls in tow, all with elite axe/mace goblins and 2 Bowman/elite Bowman goblins along with 2 ambushes AND a Forgotten Beast made of... Diorite I think (some kinda stone).  Suffice to say My 40 strong Military in copper/leather armor with silver/copper weapons didn't stand much of a chance once they made it past my traps since they managed to jam every single one as they hit my entrance and then decimate my military.  Granted my military took a sizeable chunk out of them before going down but once they were out of the fight it was a slaughterfest.  R.I.P. Gildedtrades.

On the note of the Cavern... where do I edit the raws so I can make them NOT appear so bloody far down so I can try and access the good stuff earlier? >.>

I'ma do it. I'm going to actually mod something this time, and it won't crash DF (too much).

I know what I'm going to do with this, but I'd still like some suggestions.

I decided to cheat and remove the grazer tags from my animals since I live in a mountainous region and thus don't have that much vegetation to be eaten and I was tired of seeing them starve to death or getting butchered in ambushes.  I know, I know, it's cheating and I'm not proud of it... but I have some amazing indoor pastures now!

Ok, how much does making a rabbit into a war rabbit raise its combat abilities?  Thats what I really want to know!

This much.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Okay maybe not but it'd be awesome.

I'm trying to figure out how to weaponize the stranger sitting in my living room watching cartoons. Ideas anyone?
set a cage trap along his most likely path.
build occupied cage next to chain in front yard
attach animal to chain

You forgot he needs a kennel, make sure he has  [TRAINABLE] tag, and his Animal Trainer skill active.
