DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: killing off the betters
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:01:00 am »
Amen, Forumsdwarf!  Seven dwarves with little sense, and lots of greed, that's what it's about.  I always give my leader the job title, "chairdwarf," and the other original seven get to be "_____ partners"  (miner partner, brewer partner, etc.).  It would be cool if they could get some benefit when the economy starts - maybe they'd get the rents the other dwarves pay?

DF Gameplay Questions / What level do floodgates go on?
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:46:00 am »
What level should I place a floodgate on for maximum success: the channel bed, or the surrounding ground level?

Ooh, excellent idea, Markavian!  I'll just fill the channels left behind by my poor floodgates, and put retractable bridges over them; this time I'm making it to the adamantine for sure.  Although I do prefer the image of dwarves in the control room frantically shouting, "Raise bulkheads 6 through 10!" to "Retract bridges 6 through 10"

Thanks for the advice folks; I particularly like the recessed floodgates to leave room to rebuild.  I would use granite.exe, except it looks like my floodgate ploy just isn't feasible.  I had been using them as on-command walls to channel invaders wherever I wanted them to go, but with a squad of trolls supporting the golbins, it just isn't worth it.  The first (troll-free) siege was fun, though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Rebuilding floodgates

What do I need to do to rebuild a destroyed floodgate, and can it even be done?  Some mean ol' trolls came by and smashed up my beautiful siege defenses, and now I can't seem to place new floodgates on the squared the broken ones had occupied.

DF Gameplay Questions / Indoor light areas and cave adaptation?
« on: January 30, 2008, 02:27:00 am »
So I'd like to keep from going cave adapted, but I'd also like to keep an nice ceiling between my doughty dwarves and the giant eagles; the question is this: an indoor above-ground location is described as "light" - will this stave off cave adaptation?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Starvation amid plenty

I just noticed an option under the orders menu for "dwarves ignore food."  Could this be it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Starvation amid plenty
« on: May 31, 2007, 05:30:00 pm »
My latest fortress just died in late summer due to some confusing starvation troubles.  I had food for the dwarves - a couple of units of each of the cheaper meats that I'd brought along, and the first crop of helmets had sprung up but had not yet been harvested.  Rather than eat, they just walked from food barrel to food barrel, looking confused. There was definitely food, and it was edible raw - the z menu showed 12 "meat".  I think it had something to do with locking the front doors and forbidding them from going outside, because before I did this, they managed to eat just fine.  I know it is not due to hauling issues, because the jobs list showed no active or inactive food hauling jobs.  Also, yes, I did check the wiki under starvation and known bugs both, but I still don't know what's going wrong.  Can anyone explain where I went wrong?

Thanks for the fast responses on my previous questions.  Once again, the title is the question.

DF Gameplay Questions / Demolishing built walls
« on: January 19, 2008, 04:28:00 am »
Can it be done?  I notice I can't dig them out, but is there another way to get rid of walls I've built?

DF Suggestions / Re: Mounts and pet armour

True, the PHB has riding dogs for small characters, but D&D dwarves are medium.   (sorry, please go back to your regularly scheduled topic.)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.  Biggest problem?  RPI-inducing wall and floor designation.  I can't get enough of making ridiculous surface structures, but it's driving me batty.

Mark me down for the More Stone Party, please.  I don't care for the name, since I'm actually in favor of the same amount of stone we have now, but a lot of movements have been named by their detractors.

With easier, less-RPI-inducing wall and floor designation, it'll be easy to use all of it by building stuff.

DF Suggestions / Religion
« on: June 02, 2007, 06:37:00 pm »
Maybe I've played too much D&D, but nothing says "dwarf" like a plate-armored warhammer-wielding cleric, and we all know altars have a long and illustrious history in roguelikes.  Also, wouldn't it be cool to build  grand temples to the earth-gods?  So has anyone had any ideas about how religion might look in the fortress?
