Yeah I don't like the diagonals either but couldnt resist the extra 4 rooms a floor. They are up and down stairs?

I've started building apartment towers for my more useful dwarfs to live in. I'm sure a lot of you have done this as well and could share layouts and designs.

DF Gameplay Questions / What's a good year to start a fortress?

Usually i start around the 100 year mark but i've been getting constantly wiped out after 3 or 4 sieges. So i waited another 50 years and started but now theres nothing at all even though i embarked on a continent with a lot of human towns and goblin fortresses, haven't seen a single thief.

Should i start earlier or later?
