DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Surviving with one dwarf
« on: October 29, 2012, 06:13:17 pm »
How viable is digging and then immediately removing ramps to the surface, presumably with FPS capped at slow motion? In theory I would think you could build a support under a plug of land you want to access (such as something with wood or an axe on it), then use ramp-digging to breach the surface without actually going up and being seen. After digging each ramp, remove it, until you've sawed all the way around the piece you want, and then cave it in from somewhere remote.

Am I right that, if done correctly, this won't attract undue attention, and will allow access to needed goods. Unless I'm, as they say, dead wrong.

Uh, I never said I build on one z-level. I just said I try not to deconstruct on the z-level where my stockpiles are, because of the bug that magically moves the stockpile's entire contents to the place where you deconstruct stuff. That bug is hell when you have 4 years worth of masterwork roasts that are suddenly sitting on the ground.

Pots are for booze. All my food is in a minecart quantum stockpile that doesn't allow barrels, except for the prepared meal stockpiles in the dining room. This works great as long as I never deconstruct anything on that z-level.

All my booze pots are green glass. I find that I run out of stone in DF2012. Minecart stockpiles have all but eliminated the need for big digs.

I always just replace my mayor with my favorite dwarf.. are there any consequences for that? I haven't noticed yet.
I think the only consequence is carvings of dwarves rejecting them. Which always make me snicker, so that's a positive.

I do not trust this Mrs. "Pudgykins".

She destests hamsters. Who could detest a hamster?!
I hamstersat for a friend (well, ferret-and-hamstersat) a couple of years ago. The ferrets were fine, but the hamster bit straight through my left middle finger. I got away before it could shake me around by the left middle finger and rip it away to remain in the hamster's grip, but I detested that hamster. That hamster became an enemy of Doublestrafe.

I have given her the name "Mrs. Pudgykins."

I never thought I'd see the day.

She's the most socially skilled dwarf in my fortress. She never loses mayoral elections. She has made one demand, for a copper weapon rack in her office. And she never, ever gives orders.

I feel like I just won Dwarf Fortress.

Doesn't embarking on an island accomplish this?

So, a Herd of Giant Emus had decided to (Roost?) in front of the entrance. As the fort had only recently been established, this was a serious annoyance, so I sent the badly trained expedition leader after them to disperse them, maybe rough'em up a bit. He instead opted to use the "slaughter the shit out of them one at a time, scare the fuckers off" method. He started chasing them one at a time, murdering the shti out of them, but I noticed something weird. He would hit them, but they'd keep running. He'd slash them with his axe again, and they'd keep running. They all kept running until moter nerves were severed. They left very long Blood trails all over the outside as they ran and he ran after them. None ever attacked, only ran and ran and ran.

If you're on the surface and Giant Emu starts to wail
Hit him with an axe and he'll leave a bloody trail
Giant Emu runs on the road all day
Bloody gaping wounds will not make him change his ways

Giant Emu
That axedwarf is after you!
Giant Emu
If he catches you you're through!

Well, I just had an uber-badass migrate to my fortress.  I have taken to calling him Captain Stone, for he is now Captain of the Ironflanks squad of my military.

We'll just let the descriptions speak for themselves with this guy

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is the pony equivalent of Mean Son of a Bitch in Fallout New Vegas.

I have taken it upon myself to engrave an image of the epic battle from Captain Stone's youth against the vile Husband of the Dusk Horror.

If a dwarf threw the door, wouldn't it be spinning in the log?

Any tips for training marksdwarves and then setting up a tower/base for them somewhere? I tried to train them before but it seems as though there's no easy way to do it.
There isn't, best thing you can do is arm them with crossbows and send them to kill capybaras and such. Or give them hunting instead.

Trying to make them train is like playing Dwarf Fortress inside Dwarf Fortress  :'(

There are two ways I know of to make insanely awesome marksdwarves: the Zombie Pit and the Bronze Colossus Pit. The colossus is great because they can't kill him, especially if you keep them on bone bolts; in a reanimating biome, or with a properly imprisoned necromancer, the zombies will also last forever. The zombie pit works its absolute best when built on a border between biomes; that way, you can open a door and the zombies move into the non-reanimating biome, where you can kill them in order to clean out the spent bolts. Afterwards, chuck 'em right back in!

I've also had some success carving fortifications in a column of rock that passes through an underground lake in the caverns and stationing soldiers there to shoot at forgotten beasts, who won't path through water and just wander aimlessly.

I like to have different squads for each weapon, because it helps me remember to have enough freakin' military dwarves instead of making one bunch of hammerdwarves and forgetting about it.

My guess is that Goomba's skill has sharply improved after all this drawing, and he is no longer capable of drawing reports sufficiently badly.
