So I tweaked minimum volcanoes from 3 to 10. And that's pretty much it. The very first world I genned stuck a volcano right in my face throughout the whole generation process. In fact, the RNG is handing me everything I need on a silver platter.

Behold Minedclosed:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That plateau is basically the only flat land until the bottom of the mountain, way to the south (I used a 5x3 embark because I was afraid there would be none at all). The slopes seriously cut into the tree numbers, but I should be able to free up the wood eventually: that yellow dirt inside the wall is pure unadulterated sand. I'm looking forward to making one big freakin' green glass fortress.

So far, the RNG has been showering me with gifts. I'm anxious to see what else it's going to shower me with...

i cant really decipher the ascii, but cant enemies get up the hillside over those slopes left and right, and just enter your fort over the slopes inside the walls?
They could, if I hadn't built walls extending all the way up to the rim of the caldera and built (and then removed) floors over all the earth ramps on the outside to destroy them.

Wow, somebody actually spent time on dorfs that wasn't an attempt to create a new way to maim dorfs?
No, this was an attempt to create new dwarves to maim.
They'll maim each other very nicely during the tantrum spiral that'll happen when even one of them kicks the bucket.
Not really. If I understand right, they're in isolated pairs.  That should contain the tantrum spiral quite nicely.

I live near a wooded hill. The other morning, instead of an interesting interaction between domestic and wild animals, I saw this:

There isn't a graphics pack attached, is there? At work, can't check. If there isn't, I may give this a shot.

Recreate the crypt from Ico.

A vast open hall with terraced rows of 1x1 rooms. Every season a dwarf is locked into one of the rooms, never to be seen again.

You could probably use it for a dining hall, for that matter.

I had my first successful siege fought off - two at once, eight trolls, tons of hammergoblins, a couple master/lord rank goblins... and it was all thanks to my surprising stream of Great migrants. Seriously, I had Great everythings. One carpenter got to Legendary, and trading consisted of masterful spiked wooden balls. He made practically everything in the fort, and wood was abundant. So it was pretty funny when, to force goblins to walk over weapon traps over a pit of spikes by retracting the bridges, the legendary carpenter was on the bridges and fell onto the masterful spikes he himself had crafted. He dragged himself through the brass door of the spike pit, but it was too late. His neck had been punctured and he suffocated.

The fortress was later abandoned for FPS reasons - turns out my computer isn't invincible and actually can't handle a giant underground reservoir constantly being emptied into an aqueduct. It was worth it, though, to make prisoners constantly have to fight the water flow or else they'd get swept 40 z-levels into a flooded cavern pit.
Ooh, hey, you should give this story to that guy who draws stuff!

So here's a thing. A while ago I had some goblins over for tea and violence, and the first incident was one of my marksdwarves shooting a goblin in the lower leg with a masterwork steel arrow. What took me by surprise was that the goblin immediately gave in to pain. The marksdwarf was of medium skill, and the goblin didn't seem particularly frail. So I surmised that the deciding factor must have been the ☼steel arrow☼.

So I have to wonder, if it really hurt that much to get hit by it, what does a ☼steel arrow☼ actually look like?

All my forts die of fps. There's no reason to worry about it getting bloated. It's already bloated.

Okay right, in the sucession fort of necrothreat, Aminer is casually mining out valuable gold. About 8 trogs show up and attack the guy. The result?

I imagine her as just skipping around, driving her pick into trogs when applicable. The survivers flee.
Today I learned that troglodyte guts don't stink.
