DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Overdone? Or always in style?

I like to make lots of alunite or marble blocks and build my hospital out of them, and then build a 9x9 red cross into the floor in cinnabar. Tasteful, visible, meaningful, and deadly poisonous.

Dwarven poetry--this cannot be left to die. Here's another one.

Oh, and this seems appropriate:

Brilliant sunbeams blaze
Scintillate on summer grass
I'm gonna blow chunks.

When I first saw that I thought it's what it might be, but then I thought, "no, because if it was an undump, it would have two more tiles dug out--one in front of and one behind the trapdoor."

So that's why it doesn't work. There's no stockpile space before and after, just the space where the pressure plate was and the trapdoor.

Apparently you have to use a different design in .34 anyway.

Is the cage-dupe bug reported?

Funny. I have my squads of 3 set to Train 10 and they do nothing but demonstrations and sparring...

Right, because they're not squads of 10. In a squad of 10 it's theoretically possible to follow your order, so they'll attempt to do so. You can't do that in a squad of 3, so they assume you're an idiot and do the best they can.

I always hated haiku. (A bias I still harbor too...)

They strike me as needlessly cryptic, disjointed, and unnatural forms of communication.

I won't hate on people who like them... just that I personally don't. I prefer the limmericks, which are quirky, silly, and fun. Haiku are dry leaves in a cold wind next to the drunken party at the pub of limmericks.  *shrug*

Ooh, hey, dry leaves in a cold wind--that would make a great basis for a haiku!

Withered leaves blow by
Cold wind drives them with the dust
The husk does not see

But how about a limerick?

Cried Thob as he worked at the mill,
"There's a pigtail sock on the hill!"
As he crunched through dry leaves
Wind blew dust in his greaves--
So his husk is out roaming there still.

Now that's some proper haiku! Love it!

Big props for the Basho reference.

Full disclosure, especially now that I remember that TinyPirate is scouting:

In the interest of edification and intellectualism, I have attempted to illustrate the proper form of the haiku. Please read and be enlightened.

In the murky pool
A cave crocodile leaps in
The sound of water

Moonlight filters through
The vast wormy tendril grove
A werepenguin cries

Fields of longland grass
Nothing else is left behind
Of a warrior's dreams

Along this wide road
None go past this autumn eve
It is above ground

Butterfly perfumes
Its wings in the heady scent
Of the miasma

Spring has now arrived
This morning a nameless hill
Bathes in evil mist

It is deep autumn
I think about my neighbor
Is he a vampire?

This is what happens when Pinkie Pie becomes a necromancer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where are the fortresses made in Lego?!
« on: February 29, 2012, 03:46:26 pm »
I read tis one article about a life sized house made entirely out of legos. They even had a lego cat! Then someone stole the cat.

Guy was ordered to take down the house because it was "unstable" :(
Must have been a load-bearing cat.

Ok, maybe it can be limericks; it just can't be that one.

There was a young dwarf from the mountain
Who was blind when it came down to counting.
His stack went so high
That it tickled the sky;
It was his first and last magma fountain.

I am a drunken dwarf
I can and will always barf
I drink lots of booze
Then I go snooze
I die near things that sound like carf

This is why it can't be limericks.

Haiku are for elves. Real dwarves write villanelles on the spot.

A vile force of darkness has arrived.
The threat is distant, but another's near:
My arm, once severed, now has been revived.

Until this moment, we might have survived.
But now this truth seems eminently clear:
A vile force of darkness has arrived.

A fortnight back, a bustling fortress thrived;
But darkness lurked within its walls, I fear.
My arm, once severed, now has been revived.

To rule a lifeless army he contrived,
But as he struck at all that we hold dear --
A vile force of darkness has arrived.

I did my best, but now am limb-deprived;
A common fate for those who volunteer.
My arm, once severed, now has been revived.

Besieged inside and out, our hope's nosedived --
The Duke just drank our final drop of beer.
A vile force of darkness has arrived.
My arm, once severed, now has been revived.

I've been embarking and re-embarking in the same place for five saves now, trying to get it right. 3/4 of it is Calm, 1/4 is Sinister, but the volcano is in the Sinister part.

Point #1: It rains foul ooze all the time in the sinister part, so evil rains do happen in Sinister. This one causes bruises on every body part but doesn't seem to do any lasting damage.

Point #2: I haven't seen a single zombie, except during the first attempt when I got a necromancer siege in the first six months. (Three guesses how that went.) Then again, I've been trying to keep out of the ooze, since it tends to make for unhappy dwarves. I should dump a body part over there and see what happens.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sparring - Fixed ??
« on: February 28, 2012, 12:05:10 am »
I believe that any effort to level up anything other than weaponskill is kind of false economy - weapon skill enhances parrying - it's actually a really good defensive skill itself, having a high weapon skill also seems to enhance the growth of all other skills, especially as the weaponskill becomes legendary+.
I've got five sparring-trained legendary axedwarves with freshly mace-crushed skulls that all say otherwise.
