DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Building into a river
« on: May 13, 2011, 10:13:21 am »
Hang on. You're trying to build stairs down to the ground, in an area where you have ice walls but a non-ice floor? This sounds an awful lot like something I've noticed on my many glacier embarks: I can dig stairs down through ice just fine, but when I get to the LAST layer of ice before hitting rock (i.e. I have a rock floor and ice walls), the dwarves just leave a hole instead of digging stairs and all subsequent attempts to build stairs in that area, no matter what material I select and where it is, give me "cancels blah blah; cannot find path". I've always had to use ramps to get down through ice because of this. Once you are down there though it's no problem. Try digging a second access down using ramps, dig into your stairwell, build the stairs, then wall it up again. Did that make any sense?

This makes no sense at all but i can confirm that it is true - i noticed the same both in frozen aquifers and in glacial embarks. Use ramps and channels to get to the lowest layer of ice.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: >:( A MILLION ROOMS
« on: May 13, 2011, 08:49:59 am »
I tend to make 2x3 rooms with a bed, a master work door(yes one for every one, I figure it a good exercise for my masons and a way to get rid of stone), a cabinet and a chest. And because my masons are so buffed from making all those doors the cabinets and chests tend to be pretty good too.
Yeah that's definitely a way to get rid of stone but how do you get rid of doors?

you know, dwarves die, that's how it goes. so it goes

Kick everyone out of the captain's squad, then you'll be able to fire him.

Or you could just set him on fire. That works too.

Nah, he's a legendary fighter

How soon can I re-enable him and get the squad back together? I think all the merchants have cleared the map

Disband his squad and fire him asap.
Then make him regular militia captain and get his guys back to service as army.
never ever appoint any other dwarf as CotG
Or just relax and have fun. With armed fortress guard and legendary fighter CotG it is bound to ensue.

1115
be sure to fire your CotG

How do I fire him? the only option is to replace him and "nobody" isn't a choice

"Leave Vacant" in an option iirc

EDIT: also, you can understand that literally

tell me about it. I have had 4 adventurers killed by the same goblin. he has full steel armor and a silver whip. I always kill his whole crew then he kicks the crap outta me.

Become a superhumanly agile and strong legendary wrestler.
Bash him to the ground with a charge, grip his throat, choke it and srtange him. No armor saves from this. After he passes out, you can do whatever you want.
That's 3 wrestling moves and most likely he will have a chance to make an attack or two, thus you should have some armor or good blocking-dodging skills or at least some willpower not to give in to pain instantly if he chips a bone.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: World drowning device!
« on: May 13, 2011, 02:42:58 am »
You can only drown siegers if you wall off the edges, because otherwisa water would leave the map and never have 7/7 depth. Don't know if flow can wash creatures away from the map, that would be cool as a non-lethal defensive weapon.

Well basicly the idea is:
If you play nice then good arean are safe and tidy... if you start doing baaaad things like killing off wildlife ne masse, mass deforestation and/or abuse of magma cannons... then sooner than later the whole area will rise against you... trees would become ents and attempt to siege the hell out of you. Maybe some good titans and local elves could join the struggle to get rid of you and your dorfs.

Hey why shoult ents and titans wait until you mass deforest land, kill everything and make magma cannons out of their ash and bones? Don't they read the forums and don't they know for sure that you are going to do that anyway?
Instead, every log in your wagon should be animated and start crushing your dwarves' skulls at the very moment of their arrival!

This is something I've wondered about for some time.  I know some pieces of furniture can't be moved through (tables and statues, to my knowledge), while others, such as chairs or chests, can.  I also wonder the same regarding machines (gears and axles, specifically).
Statues and trees are non-passable. Gears and axles are passable, as are tables, chairs, chests, coffers, coffins, slabs cabinets and all other furniture.

By the way, does bronze colossus throwing yours dwarves and dogs across the map count?

I try to embark with enough iron and flux to outfit one dwarf with a full set of steel armor and a training sword.  For giant badgers, a real sword might be necessary.

I'd suggest making armour and swords for two soldiers. One can always get an especially unlucky bite when he is kicked around the map by GBs - if they latch on a limb even just bruising the fat through the mail shirt, one soldier will die quickly.

I think good areas must be hostile toward dwarfs even more than evil ones are. Dwarves are definitely not good - They dig, they build huge aboveground structures, they burn forests for coal, they maim the land in every way possible. Forces of good must fight them until the last dwarf is crushed under the toppling debris of their last fortress!

I seem to recall someone told about a way to dig through SMR layer, so that the entire world can be collapsed, not just what is above magma.
It was something about digging hiles in SMR either with channels from above or stairs from below, then abandoning and reclaiming the fort so that the game forgets about where SMR is, and then digging neighbouring tiles.
This looks overly complicated for me, can anyone say if it is really possible?
