Anyway, some numbers with regard to CK2. for example:
2014 - Vanilla game sales:
http://www.pcgamer.com/crusader-kings-2-has-sold-one-million-copies/

2015 - Vanilla + DLCs + Expansion Packs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusader_Kings_II

As of February 13, 2015, the base game has sold over 1.1 million copies, with the expansion packs sales totaling over 2.5 million units sold and the cosmetic DLCs 5.5 million. According to Paradox Interactive, the game is played by an average of 12,500 players every day, 104,000 per month, with an average playtime of 99 hours per player.

This is pretty decent for a strategy game.

Yeah, it is, doesn't change the fact that tons of people can't get into it (or think they can't), though.

This is an unpopular belief and it has been stated before but it makes sense and I think deep down a lot of DF players are aware of that.

Such edge.

Really though, I don't see an interface fix as a magic bullet, there's plenty of things keeping people out, like the pacing, the learning curve, the graphics style, the format, and even the genre. I doubt many people who aren't determined enough to learn the interace would be determined enough to stick with the game past their third fortress falling to some obscure threat or another, if that long. Most people aren't playing Crusader Kings for many of the same reasons, and that one has a fairly slick interface. Some games just aren't for certain people, and that's fine. Would a cleaned up game draw a bunch of new players? Probably. Would enough of them stick around for it to matter? Probably not.

The moral of the story is never again to go on Bay12 intoxicated.

I can relate. :P

Meh, if people don't want to play DF for whatever reason let them, we're not a religion.

As said before many times they do not run on a feudal system.  They run on a socialist/communist system because despite the existance of 'barons' and 'kings' among dwarves nobody owns any actual private property except for the clothes on their back.

They run on a feudal system with the economy stripped because it sucked. It's a temporary thing.

Yeah, there were two-handed flails, but I don't think they ever reached polearm length or reach.

I do not actually think we should actually be able to choose those things directly.  That is because a player will not necceserily know the general character and appearance of the civilization that the person he is player, so we could up with people who have a completely different appearance to the other people in their civ, which people may come to regret.

Could always lock or warn against traits that wouldn't occur naturally within the relevant populations, there's also outsiders who wouldn't be affected by any of that. Unusual traits are a staple of fantasy heroes though, so I wouldn't shy away from it entirely.

Therefore there is no Mr.Anachronism fell from the sky as is presently the case, if you want to become part of part of the world then you have to become just that; if you cannot find the right person then you have to look elsewhere, not wave a magic wand to make one.

That's going to be a problem regardless, if the dude himself doesn't randomly fall from the sky his super-awesome sword skills will still have to, and at that stage it probably makes more sense to be some random from out of nowhere than the high-master swordsman potato-farmer who's never been in a battle his entire life. That is unless you do away with skill customization entirely, in which case you'd be left with about three viable adventurers a world.

Ideally you'd be able to choose your characters traits, appearance etc eventually, rpg-style, in addition to the option of choosing historical figures with preset traits.

I'm disappointed the title wasn't the entire suggestion.

Then your SCB uses obsolete data for their evaluation.

If they're anything like their Norwegian equivalents they just cherry pick facts to support whatever narrative they've decided on.

Sounds interesting for Adventure Mode but not sure if it would matter to Fortress Mode.

Assembling infrastructure and collecting materials for an end of the world spell seems like it would be a perfect endgame goals in Fortress Mode.

I'd like to see something subtle done with spheres, like more prominent miasma for a FB associated with death and decay or certain animals jumping off cliffs or attempting to drown themselves when one associated with suicide stops by, though I feel it makes more sense for titans. There's a long way between the caverns and the surface.

Dyret, as you probably know just as well as I the shops also stop selling beer at an ungodly early hour here (8pm on normal days, 6pm on Saturdays), and the special government-controlled liquor stores that are the sole vendors of booze and wine close even earlier. So every Friday there's usually a massive line of people waiting in line at those liquor stores.

Yup, prohibition grade bullshit. Luckily they're not preventing people from keeping a stash.

Well, here in the grim darkness of the cold north we get as utterly shitfaced as humanly possible every weekend so we can actually talk to each other and such. No idea if that counts as unusual, but it's supposedly healthier than the continental 'glass with every meal' style of doing things. :-\
