In fact as a new to the forums lurker all I get from reading this thread is that a couple of people are seemingly determined to derail the thread for the sole purpose of keeping Masterworks in it's box ... presumably because it's unclean.

I know, right? It's like the civil rights struggle of our day!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The tiniest mod you'll ever see...

Heh, that's an excellent mod.

From what I've heard it gets old fast if you're used to DF. It does a good job of explaining itself and its features, and the interface is massively simplified, but so is everything else, limiting your options quite a bit compared to DF. There's also Stronghold HD, which is kind of in the same genre, and probably a better game.

Only way I know of is entering stealth mode... It's a bit clunky, but I think toggling stealth is instantaneos, so it shouldn't get you killed.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Mode Or Adventure Mode Or Both...
« on: August 23, 2014, 03:28:10 pm »
When DF2014 came out, introducing some nasty bugs in fortress mode, I've decided to try adventure mode, for the first time. My initial enthusiasm soon wore off. I didn't like it. Perhaps some of you might not agree with me, but the world in adventure mode seems so artificial. Hearing "It is terrifying" all the time makes me feel that I play with some retarded robots. All quest are generic and uninteresting. While combat system is indeed nice, it's not enough to make it entertaining for me.

Yeah, as I said in another thread, adventure mode is kind of a mess of half-finished features at the moment. You have to make your own fun, like say exploring your old forts, finding and taking on goblin armies, wiping out the elves, etc. Everyone being a retarded robot is a big problem though... supposedly people have personalities and dreams like they do in fortress mode, but there's no real way to explore or interact with them yet, which is sad but not unexpected.

Maybe you dodged into a flanking position of some sort? Creatures actually face a direction now, so that kind of thing can be quite significant.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Convince me to start Adventure Mode
« on: August 23, 2014, 03:05:18 pm »
I'd say adventure mode has infinite potential, but everything is kind of in-between at the moment. The political stuff is kind of there only not, the military stuff is kind of there only not, the heroic stuff is kind of there only not, and the civilizations are just plain bad at keeping themselves alive. It'd probably be easier to get into it in on of the older, more structured releases or wait until actual stuff to do goes in. There's always the crazy stuff most people have fun with when they start out, though. Pushing soldiers of fortress walls, wiping out forest retreats, exploring the caverns, taking over a site, or raiding a vault if you're hardcore. Hell, just exploring the world and various sites, ruined or otherwise can be good fun. Exploing your old forts is what adventure mode was made for initially, though, and probably one of the most intense experiences in the game, especially if your fort fell to something interesting that decided to stick around.

DF Suggestions / Re: Militia Captains and Discipline

Agreed, or at least be able to keep them from breaking. Should probably be based on his leadership or something, though. Do leaders do anything right now, anyway? Other than being required for forming squads?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How often do you save-scum?

I did it a lot when I was learning the game, but not so much now, unless I find myself in a new situation and want to experiment with various solutions.

DF General Discussion / Re: Why don't dwarves have butts?
« on: August 22, 2014, 02:52:05 pm »
I think he's trying to keep it clean to avoid bullshit media controversy. Besides, the butt is kind of just the fatty shock absorbing part of the lower body... no reason to make it its own thing unless you want to shove your sword up one or something, which is probably what he's trying to avoid.

Definitely DF Mode for me.  I don't really see the point of adventure mode, there are a million other roguelikes out there that probably do a better job of that sort of thing.

DF has a persistent world, a mostly believable combat system and more or less infinite potential going for it though, it hasn't really been a roguelike for a long time.

Anyway, I play both modes more or less equally.

Really? Like Graknorke I assumed it wouldn't be, but it's so close I can't tell the difference.

Set the FONT entry to 800x600 or 16x16 in the init txt file. The 800x600 is somewhat easier to read, in my experience.

nope, nope, all must learn the game as I did; flailing and in a minor state of panicked confusion! Tilesets are for weaklings!

Then again there are people who find ASCII a lot more intuitive and understandible than tilesets, not that it'll help the panicked flailing any, DF being what it is.

Ï don't believe any food rots once stored, unless Masterwork has done something with that. I'd personally let my Dwarves enjoy it for all their hard work, but buying out entire caravans is also viable, if you can be bothered with all the useless bullshit they usually drag with them; it might kill your fps.
