This is an easy problem to deal with if you select two or more synergistic industries and tasks on which to strongly focus. I like glass production, masonry, and food production. These three ensure that my mega project keeps growing and my dwarfs stay fed. If I get idlers I give them one or more of my preferred labors and the problem is solved. If you still have more idlers and don't want any more workers for your core industries just draft them into the military. That'll show those lazy bastards.

This is how I'm keeping my ~130 dwarf strong fort running at 0 idle.

I modified tigermen and gcs to domestic and they do a good job together. The gcs web/poison the enemy and then tigermen tear the helpless enemy to pieces. The spiders tend to take heavy casualties, however, with the tigermen taking relatively few.

Yeah, you need to set it lower than your target population. I want 140 dwarfs in my fort because I've never had a king, but setting the population cap 140 got me to around 160 or so dwarfs which is too many for my machine to handle without  suffering from fps issues. I made a new fort with my cap set to 125 figuring I'd hit 140 eventually from births and migrants. The fort is sitting at 122 right now, so I think I'll hit 140 population in a wave or two.

I embark with 10k points because it already takes up a lot of time and I like to just get to the stuff I like. I max out two skills per dwarf.

My most recent build is geared towards glass and food production.

Noble (1 point in each: persuader, negotiator, liar, judge of intent, appraiser, organizer, record keeper, consoler, pacifier, and leader) x1
Building Designer/Glassmaker x2
Grower/Cook x1
Grower/Brewer x1
Grower/Glassmaker x1
Mechanic/Glassmaker x1

I embark with 7 picks, give them all mining and let them get to work. After the first wave I substitute migrants as miners in place of the growers and the noble. The noble is my only noble other than my medical dwarf, whom I pick from amongst the migrants. Once the base is dug and cleared of stone I set up my traps and make green glass blocks with which to build huge pointless structures!

With the new [Artificial_hivable] tag, what if we gave it to dwarven babby, then we cound just stick babys in a "Baby hive" while they spit out honey for us.
How is babby formed.
Guy Dwarf+Girl Dwarf=Babby Dwarf.

Then Babby goes into Hive.

Yes. I'd ask him to set up a non-profit first, though, so I could get a nice tax break because I imagine that's something I'd give a shit about if I had money. Our lust for the blood of elves and kittens could feed Africa, you guys!

I agree! I want to take this challenge, but I really would like to read some experiences first. It seems very challenging.

I want to make green glass barrels and bins. I found some information about this, but it was for 40d. I also found some leads to other mods, but I couldn't locate what I wanted in them. Is this something I can use a smelter for or do I have to create a custom workshop?
