DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Walls or Smoothed walls
« on: April 04, 2012, 09:38:20 am »
You can make a 2x2 bedroom into a royal bedroom with 10 masterwork steel large spiked balls in a weapon trap.

This is useful for saving single dwarves. Allow them to handle the balls of happiness for a bit and they'll likely not go insane no matter what trauma has happened to them. The downside is that pretentious nobles tend to go nuts if someone beneath them has more balls than they do.

The problem is probably not a lack of balls in the bedrooms though. Your dwarves are most likely losing their minds due to something more fundamental, like lack of food or alcohol. They may also benefit from more of the simple pleasures in life, such as having enough chairs and tables or clothing. Check their thoughts and satisfy their desires.

Or being naked.

That doesn't make sense. Health care won't stop you from doing any jobs, even if you have a hospital with patients in it. It will just delay them if they go play doctor first.

Z>animals menu to set a trainer and toggle war/hunting training now, you don't need a kennel.

This sounds even better than the clothing release!

Don't think of it as irrigation. Farms don't need water, they need mud.
Mud is left on the floor when water flows across a tile. So, let in a bit of water flow in, then cut off the water source and wait for it to dry up. The mud left behind is used to farm.

I can't find any reference by Toady as to which hauling bugs/inefficiencies he is trying to address, aside from having bins and bags used to collect multiple items. I wonder if a single dwarf puts a TSK on all items that he plans to collect at the start of the haul, or just keeps making the decision on the way.

I hope block bins are exempt from the new change, because I can't think of a situation where multiple blocks need to be picked up, and the hauler would move slowly due to the bin weight.

Urist, Lift with your knees, not your back.

wonder how this will work. Will they grab empty containers or partialy filled ones from a stockpile? Will they do this everytime? 1 lone sock is in the middle of the floor. Will they get a bin before they fetch the sock, or just put the sock directly into the stockpile?

How long do you have to hold it?

353
Do danger rooms train enemies  and animals too?  Put some goblins in there and see how awesome they become. Then you'll have an archery target that never dies to your rookie marksmen.

I just had some human merchants arrive and take forever to unload. I keep checking and they said they are still unloading. Then they left before they even were ready to trade. What douchebags.

On each Z-level, there are 2 parts to each tile. The wall and the floor. Mining removes the wall, but leaves a floor. Channeling removes the wall and floor, it leaves a ramp on the tile on the Z-level below. This is basicly removing the walls on 2 levels at once and the floor between them.

Looks like you channeled the pathway between the murky pool and your farms. This means you mined out the floor and there is 7/7 water in the tile below it. You can't make a floodgate there because theres no floor. You can build a floor b-C-f first and then it will work.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Just picked up game

I use Ironhand graphics exclusively. It's da best. the main thing I didn't like with vanilla is the tiles weren't square. They are squeezed into rectangles. Designating a 11x11 room looked like a 8x11 room or something.

Well it's partly because all I have is copper and crappy ores. I have a big pile of iron crap thats getting melted down as soon as I finish my glass magma pump stack. But its 120 Z levels tall. So I focused on other things. I just started doing the pump stack.

I don't use them. I train 2 teachers. 2 of my starting 7 are my first 2 soldiers. They start from day 1(or whenever I get my barracks setup, which is asap.) They are legendary fighters pretty quickly. Once they are both doing pretty well, I split them up into seperate squads and assign one recruit to each of them. When those 2 recruits are nice and skilled, I move them to a third squad and assign two more new recruits to the legendary guys. After a couple of times, your legendary guys will accumulate big skill in teaching, so training new recruits gets faster and faster. My legendary champion is at teacher skill level 12 right now and working on his 3rd recruit. Their training only takes about 6 months before they are ready to join that 3rd squad.

The legendary guy sees lots of combat too. He has over 90 notable kills, mostly from going Kill Bill on hordes of goblins.

I train mark dwarfs differently. I keep them strictly behind fortifications patrolling 1 Z-level above the ground. They skill up naturally shooting all hostiles that approach, don't even need a archery range, I have several legendary+5 marksmen and all they do is patrol all day, never set foot in a barracks.  When an ambush is detected, I don't even lock the doors or dispatch the melee soldiers. Those marksmen have the main entry locked down. 10 of them in the squad and standing orders are to have 7 minimum patrol at all times. All they have is civ clothes and wooden crossbows and whatever bolts I craft from wood or buy from the caravans.

Don't have a metal industry. I scavenge whatever the enemy drops and wear it as is.

If you ever cage it. Just leave it in the cage and assign your best trainer. If they don't need to graze, It shouldn't starve. right?
