DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farming Troubles

My new design is a 11x11 room(the square you get when press shift and move over the cursor) I fit 4 4x4 farms in there with 1 kitchen, 1 still, 2 farmer's workshops, 3 querns(prefer mills if you can power them) and 2 screw presses. The main entry is a door in the corner connected to a main hallway closeby the prepared food ans booze storage areas. In the center of the room is an up/downstair. There are 4 more identical room directly above and below connected through the middle by a single up/down stair. The level directly above is for general unprocessed and uncooked plants and meat and byproducts. I also build a soaper workshop here since it will be right in the middle of all the tallow/oil and lye. I forbid prepared food and all drinks. There are 2 stockpiles by the dining room to hold these. everything else is turned on.

In the room directly below the farm level is special furniture storage. I have 4 5x5 stockpiles that each accept one of the following; bucket, barrels, bags/chests,and the 4th is a finished goods stockpile set to only accept tools for rock jugs which are needed to press oil from rock nut paste. In the 2 rooms directly below this are for full room storage of barrels on one and bags on the other. I have the smaller stockpiles set to take from these.

I almost forgot. The top level with all the unprocessed plants also holds seeds, and I have a potash stockpile encircling the up/down staircase on the main level.

I pasture one cat in each food stockpile room to handle vermin.

I build a wall around the whole map. the main entrance is fortified with crossbow pillboxes and stationed with markdwarfs. I have some war dogs chained up to spot stealthed snatchers and thieves. Anything that gets through that has to deal with 4 rows of cage traps and my champion legendary elite sword dwarf. His attributes blow away everyone elses.

I use the newest therepist to check attributes, traits and suggested roles to find the best military recruits, then from that list, I cull females from melee recruits and then cull anyone with a valuable civilian skill. If that list gets shortened too much, I broaden my initial attributes search.

I just noticed that the different colors of the animals might corrolate to how old/or how big they are.  The wagon horses I arrived with are at the very bottom of the list in a dark grey color, all the new baby animals are in red at the top of the list. It seems like they are in order from youngest to oldest. If this is how it works, it will be a big help in deciding which animal to slaughter for max meat.

Burn some trees into ash. Use an ashery to make potash. I have 2 4x4 farms that produce thousands of food with just 3 Growers. Grow quarry bushes with fertilizer(Potash). Each seed will make roughly 5 Quarry bushes. process to bag in a farmers workshop. This multiplies it by 5. You'll end up with a bag of 25 quarry bush leaves. Get 4 of those bags and cook them together to make a stack of 100 *prepared quarry leave roasts* Also, a stack of 5 quarry bushes grows from a single seed, and when processed at the farmer's workshop will yield a dozen rocknuts sometimes.

thats the great thing about fertilizer, you can multiply your seed stockpiles very fast.

Plump helmets are good starting crop since they don't need any extra processing, Once you have 200 dwarfs, the processing labor is there. I have 3 growers, 2 plant processors, 1 brewer, 1 cook, 3 wood burners, 3 potash/lye makers. I take the extra rocknuts and mill them into paste, screw press the oil out. then make rocknut soap.

I end up with so much food, I have to turn one of the farms off(set all seasons to fallow for several seasons) so the food stockpiles don't over flow.If they do, you'll end up with rotting food

Grow quarry bushes in spring, sweet pods in summer, cave wheat in autumn, plump helmets in winter. Turn off cooking for plump helmets, they are just for brewing. Also, turn off rocknut oil cooking if you plant on using it to make soap. If the booze stockpile starts to get too big, I'll turn off one of the booze plant seasons(usually plump helmets)

I'm not sure, but I think the dogs will be freeded.

Wildlife can attack forgotten beasts too. If it was a weaker one, a strong animal could conceivably kill one.

When you dig out stone directly under an aquifer, the ceiling will leak. you need to leave an extra layer to hold back the water.

Make 2 rows of fortifications sandwiching a drawbridge that you can open and close at will.

This is how I do a single layer.I use a 2x2 hole for single layer. I use a 4x4 hole for double layer. I havent encountered an aquifer more than 2 layers yet.

I find that wearing armor over clothing seems to do the trick now.

I'd prefer if roles only took attributes and traits into account, since you can already sort by skill levels on the actual labors page.
