they need to be able to stand on the dump zone and they will toss the items in the hole next to it. If there is no hole next to it, they drop it on the zone tile.

You can use both methods to move massive amounts of items into one single tile.

If you have heard of atomsmashers. Thats when a drawbridge is lowered and every item that gets squished by it is destroyed. You make a draw bridge, link it to a lever, pull it and it will lift up. (Not a retractable bridge that disapears when the lever is pulled, the one that makes a wall is the one you want.) Put a garbage zone is the space where the bridge will lower, dump all your excess stones and pull the lever again and it will all be gone.

Or the garbage chute. Dig a deep deep channel all the way to the magma sea, make an escape staircase if you don't have one. Put a 1 tile garbage zone next to the hole and the dumped items get thrown in, they land in the magma and are destroyed.

Transporting metal ores and flux and wood/coal into the lowest levels, right above the magma sea to supply your steel industry. The items land on a floor instead of magma. Your dwarfs will only have to walk to the drop point instead of the super long round trip down and up 100 flights of stairs. remember to reclaim the materials.

Or what you want, Do the same thing as above, but just selectively dump the things you want transported. drop them into a special room, then unforbid them.

channel a hole in the roof of their room and put a 1 tile zone next to the hole and press g to make it a garbage dump. mark the items you want dumped with d-b-d or press k hover the cursor over it and press d. The dwarfs will throw the items into the hole next to the garbage zone. Once down, you need to unforbid it. press d-b-c to mass reclaim.

most likely a tantruming dwarf destroyed it.

I explored the area and found an ash spirit or something and killed it pretty easily, but I can't find that sauropod.

I stumbled onto a cave. I started seeing messages about Kobolds attack and killing each other. So I went in to help. I killed a lot of them, but some won't auto attack. I have to manually attack them with Shift-A, but can't talk to them, does this mean they are friendly?

Anyway, I leave the cave site to go rest and come back and I see more kobolds attacking each other and now they are getting set on fire and bad stuff. "Kobold is struck by ball of flames" and I see mention of a Sauropod Devil. I havent found the Demon yet. What does this mean? will it kill me? Should I run while I can?

Dear wild naked mole dogs,

Please, walk around the cage traps. We already have too many of you.

Sincerely, the overseer.

Oh, you want warm? How about magma?

Do we know how traits and attributes affect skilled labor? If a dwarf is matched to a role based on attributes, how does he differ from an opposite dwarf, unfit for the role, at the same task assuming equal skill levels. Does the one fit for the role work faster? produce higher quality items? skill up faster? none of the above?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dealing with Magma Flow?
« on: March 28, 2012, 02:20:08 pm »
See This video. I was pumping out the magma sea. and it eventually drained. what remained was a Magma Flow tile with no magma liquid on it. I could build floors and stairs to it and my dwarfs walk across it with no problems.

Look for heavily wooded forests, with river, with aquifer and Shallow Metals. I find iron ore there very often.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: CRUTCH!!! WHERE ARE YOU!!?!?!?!?!?

I built a fortress with intents on supplying my adventurer. When I was ready. I forbid all bins in the fort and removed all stockpiles. Make a weapon and armor stockpile and put your best stuff there with a heavy metal bin. I used a platinum bin. All the crap gets throws everywhere, but heavy bins stay put and the stuff inside them stays inside.

When my adventure found the site, I knew exactly where to go to find my adamantine armor and weapon set. And I grabbed 3 steel flasks too. Gotta roll in style. On the way out I found a crutch and a stack of silver bolts to pickup also.

While I was there, I fought and killed 4 forgotten beasts. So make sure you bin those adventurer weapons and armor outside. you will be ambushed inside the fort by all the FBs that weren't killed. butchered it and took 25 of its meat and a barrel of 30 ale to drink and feed myself for a week.

I had fun making this big pump stack. The magma sea is on Z layer -17. Surface on layer 99. Took me a ton of steel, but once it was complete I built forges and smelters right next to the magnetite quarry. I currently have 1200 iron bars stockpiled. the only limiter on steel is charcoal. I have tons of limestone, the only issue is fuel. It uses 1422 power to turn all those pumps.

Anyways. I added another 10 or so layers to the pump stack and powered it seperately, from a river instead of an aquifer draining into the edge of the map. After a while the magma flowed over the river and stopped the water flow. After the magma dried up, I dug out the river so it would resume flowing. The rest of the magma gets pumped out and now the top level of my magma sea is dry. :(

Yes. Dont bring any axes, deconstruct the wagon, you get 3 logs. build a carpenter workshop, and make a training axe. Chop down trees.
